Rewriting Modernity
This article rereads Paul Virilio, drawing on the distinctionbetween topography and topology to argue a case for Virilio as a rewriter of modernity. Invoking Jean-François Lyotardâs notion of rewriting modernity as an unbroken process of accumulation founded on affective life in âRe-writing Modernityâ and âArgumentation and Presentation: The Foundation Crisis,â it enlists topology as a horizontal spatial structure that enables us to rethink space, time,and modernity outside the limits of the âsquared horizon,â where theâsquared horizonâ is viewed as a spatial and textual metaphor for framing perspectives on the past, present, and future. The analysis deconstructs the topography of the âsquared horizonâ as a relationality in an unfolding continuum, where spaces exist ontologically and where the immaterial forces of the dromospheric and the atmospheric generate a relational and historical connectedness
Auctor in Fabula: Umberto Eco and the Intentio of Foucault\u27s Pendulum
Umberto Ecoâs 1988 novel Foucaultâs Pendulum weaves together a wide range of philosophical and literary threads. Many of these threads find their other ends in Ecoâs nonfiction works, which focus primarily on the question of interpretation and the source of meaning. The novel, which follows three distinctly overinterpretive characters as they descend into ruin, has been read by some as a retraction or parody of Ecoâs own position. However, if Foucaultâs Pendulum is indeed polemical, it must be taken as an argument against the mindset which Eco has termed the âhermeticâ. Through an examination of his larger theoretical body, including its themes and intellectual heritage, it will be seen that Eco preserves his philosophical consistency across his fictive and non-fictive work
'Genealogical misfortunes': Achille Mbembe's (re-)writing of postcolonial Africa
In his latest work, Sortir de la grande nuit, the Cameroonian social theorist, Achille Mbembe nuances his description of the ontological status of the postcolonial African subject, which he had theorized extensively in his best-known text, On the Postcolony, and at the same time exploits the conceptual resources of a number of Jean-Luc Nancyâs lexical innovations. This recent text is also a reprise of an earlier autobiographical essay, and the gesture of this âreinscriptionâ is critical to our understanding of Mbembeâs status as a contemporary âpostcolonial thinkerâ, and the way in which he positions himself within a certain intellectual genealogy of postcolonial theory. Within this trajectory, I argue that we can read fruitfully his relationship to three influential figures: Jacques Derrida, Jean-Luc Nancy and Ruben Um NyobĂš
A System of Interaction and Structure
This paper introduces a logical system, called BV, which extends
multiplicative linear logic by a non-commutative self-dual logical operator.
This extension is particularly challenging for the sequent calculus, and so far
it is not achieved therein. It becomes very natural in a new formalism, called
the calculus of structures, which is the main contribution of this work.
Structures are formulae submitted to certain equational laws typical of
sequents. The calculus of structures is obtained by generalising the sequent
calculus in such a way that a new top-down symmetry of derivations is observed,
and it employs inference rules that rewrite inside structures at any depth.
These properties, in addition to allow the design of BV, yield a modular proof

Teaching with Feminist Judgments: A Global Conversation
This conversational-style essay is an exchange among fourteen professorsârepresenting thirteen universities across five countriesâwith experience teaching with feminist judgments. Feminist judgments are âshadowâ court decisions rewritten from a feminist perspective, using only the precedent in effect and the facts known at the time of the original decision. Scholars in Canada, England, the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, Scotland, Ireland, India, and Mexico have published (or are currently producing) written collections of feminist judgments that demonstrate how feminist perspectives could have changed the legal reasoning or outcome (or both) in important legal cases. This essay begins to explore the vast pedagogical potential of feminist judgments. The contributors to this conversation describe how they use feminist judgments in the classroom; how students have responded to the judgments; how the professors achieve specific learning objectives through teaching with feminist judgments; and how working with feminist judgmentsâwhether studying them, writing them, or bothâcan help students excavate the multiple social, political, economic, and even personal factors that influence the development of legal rules, structures, and institutions. The primary takeaway of the essay is that feminist judgments are a uniquely enriching pedagogical tool that can broaden the learning experience. Feminist judgments invite future lawyers, and indeed any reader, to re-imagine what the law is, what the law can be, and how to make the law more responsive to the needs of all people
