    The proceedings of the National Space Science Data Center Conference on Mass Storage Systems and Technologies for Space and Earth Science Applications held July 23 through 25, 1991 at the NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center are presented. The program includes a keynote address, invited technical papers, and selected technical presentations to provide a broad forum for the discussion of a number of important issues in the field of mass storage systems. Topics include magnetic disk and tape technologies, optical disk and tape, software storage and file management systems, and experiences with the use of a large, distributed storage system. The technical presentations describe integrated mass storage systems that are expected to be available commercially. Also included is a series of presentations from Federal Government organizations and research institutions covering their mass storage requirements for the 1990's

    Modeling of Physical Database Design and Performance Analysis With Emphasis on VSAM Files.

    Growth in the size of a database is reflected in deterioration of database performance. Since deterioration is related to the structure of the file, the performance efficiency involves the design of a physical database and the proper management of it. This research addresses a modeling procedure of a physical database design considering both records insertions and deletions. The model describes the behavior of a physical database in a VSAM file environment, and is extended to the issue of database reorganization through a cost analysis. The cost of accessing the database increases due to the physical disorganization of the database caused by records updates and insertions. A cost function that describes this excess cost is defined. As a remedy of the performance deterioration, database reorganization is required. Optimum reorganization points are obtained as a tradeoff between the excessive costs and the reorganization cost. Numerical examples based on the characteristics of IBM 3380 are given

    This thesis presents the methods, results and conclusions of a design and implementation of a Data Storage Description Language (DSDL). The DSDL chosen was the CODASYL Network DSDL. The design supports storage independent manipulation, for access and reorganisation of partitioned schema records, sets and indexes. The production of a Table Generator to compile the DSDL provided the basic structure and mechanisms of a run-time system for the support of dynamic incremental reorganisation. The project developed storage constructs and techniques for a machine independent Data Storage Description Language and evaluated these ideas through an implementation.The particular objectives of the project included the evaluation of the efficiency of the techniques regarding the criteria of the storage space of tables and records, time for processing, and ease of reorganisation.     A data-driven approach for a project management methodology for R&D Projects.

    267 p.The thesis is based on the proposal of an R&D project management methodology based on the Earned Quality Method (EQM) and data analysis to improve the efficiency of R&D projects in a near-real production environment in a TRL 5 to 7. The thesis relies upon published papers that propose measuring and improving the management of R&D projects. The methodology leans on the formulation and gradual and recurrent evaluation of quality criteria as a performance indicator of the work carried out. The thesis stands on the concept that quality is a measurable quantity that accumulates throughout the project. The proposed project management methodology is built on three main aspects: Collaboration between the University and Industry; The correct interpretation of the TRL where research projects are developed; The study of different metrics for project management, such as the measurement of the success of projects, the KPIs of a project-based organisation, and the EQM. The methodology has been tested with three actual use cases with different characteristics in terms of project size, funding and team members; and validated on an R&D Centre in Advanced Manufacturing in Aeronautics. The pillars of the thesis are focused on the analysis of the mentioned components and their integration for the development of a methodology to improve the efficiency in the use of resources and the quality of obtained results in the R&D projects' framework. The key findings of these studies demonstrate the effectiveness of using quality criteria for measuring progress in the management of R&D projects, as well as providing a better understanding of several critical aspects of the realisation of these projects
