    Enhanced corrosion protection of Epoxy/ZnO-NiO nanocomposite coatings on steel

    ZnO-NiO nanocomposite with epoxy coating on mild steel has been fabricated by the sol–gel assisted method. The synthesized sample was used to study corrosion protection. The analysis was performed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in 3.5% NaCl solution. The structural and morphological characterization of the metal oxide nanocomposite was carried out using XRD and SEM with Energy Dispersive Absorption X-ray (EDAX) analysis. XRD reveals the ZnO-NiO (hexagonal and cubic) structure with an average ZnO-NiO crystallite size of 26 nm. SEM/EDAX analysis of the ZnO-NiO nanocomposite confirms that the chemical composition of the samples consists of: Zn (8.96 ± 0.11 wt.%), Ni (10.53 ± 0.19 wt.%) and O (80.51 ± 3.12 wt.%). Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) authenticated that the corrosion resistance has improved for the nanocomposites of ZnO-NiO coated along with epoxy on steel in comparison to that of the pure epoxy-coated steelThis research was funded by the Undergraduate Research Experience Program project no.     Manifest Destiny in American Higher Education: Elite Tertiary Institutions and the Branch Campus Phenomenon

    American colleges and universities are increasingly looking overseas to form collaborative partnerships that can enhance institutional prestige and increase revenue. The rise of this global branch campus model is helping to transform higher education today. There are currently 164 international branch campuses around the world, most of which have opened over the past decade in response to changing technological advancements and economic challenges.While successful proximal collaborations among tertiary institutions exist throughout the USA, they are not without their own challenges. These relationships can pose logistical obstacles for institutions that share both geography and ideology. When tertiary institutions collaborate on a global scale, these problems may be compounded by difficulties that arise from trans-national logistics, cultural differences, and conflicting political ideologies. To ensure success, it is important that clear goals are articulated to help institutions classify these relationships and define success.This paper is a first step towards establishing a set of standards to define quality international education at the tertiary level. Using the literature about nine global partnerships, we coded emergent themes and selected the six categories mentioned most frequently in these sources: (1) Academic Offerings, (2) Faculty Involvement, (3) Mutual Benefits, (4) Relationship with local government, (5) Admissions Standards, and (6) Leadership & Organization. Using these categories, we developed a taxonomy that can be used to define the type of relationship that exists: Branch Campus or Campus Outpost.The taxonomy is designed to facilitate reflection about mission, goals, and the ultimate purpose of an international collaboration. As such, it can be used to evaluate the components of each type of global partnership and to measure how these elements of the relationship may or may not contribute to its ultimate success. To demonstrate the taxonomy's usefulness in understanding global partnership arrangements, we used this tool to evaluate NYU's Abu Dhabi campus and to illustrate the strengths and challenges of this evolving relationship

    The Global Strategy Task Force created a final report documenting its findings and recommendations. The intent of this report is to provide a framework through which the University can articulate and pursue an ambitious set of institutional goals that will increase its global connectivity and impact.To guide our work, the Task Force articulated a Global Vision for 2020:To establish Northwestern as one of the world's premier universities. To develop a culture and an infrastructure that link our intellectual communities to larger international idea and innovation networks and enable our faculty, students, and staff to lead and to learn from global advancements in research and teaching critical to human development and understanding.The Task Force identified three guiding principles for how we enact our vision.An ambitious intellectual agenda, not an economic one, must drive Northwestern's global investments. Northwestern should hire new faculty and staff, open new facilities, and initiate new dialogues and collaborations to the extent that it has a clear and compelling intellectual mission guiding each decision.Northwestern must focus on excellence to gain greater prominence in the world's leading innovation and idea networks, by identifying and investing deeply in select areas of strength and impact.Being global requires a bi-directional orientation. Northwestern must, with equal focus and vigor, expand its outward horizons while integrating global perspectives into the rich intellectual life of its US campuses and activities
