A survey on Human Mobility and its applications
Human Mobility has attracted attentions from different fields of studies such
as epidemic modeling, traffic engineering, traffic prediction and urban
planning. In this survey we review major characteristics of human mobility
studies including from trajectory-based studies to studies using graph and
network theory. In trajectory-based studies statistical measures such as jump
length distribution and radius of gyration are analyzed in order to investigate
how people move in their daily life, and if it is possible to model this
individual movements and make prediction based on them. Using graph in mobility
studies, helps to investigate the dynamic behavior of the system, such as
diffusion and flow in the network and makes it easier to estimate how much one
part of the network influences another by using metrics like centrality
measures. We aim to study population flow in transportation networks using
mobility data to derive models and patterns, and to develop new applications in
predicting phenomena such as congestion. Human Mobility studies with the new
generation of mobility data provided by cellular phone networks, arise new
challenges such as data storing, data representation, data analysis and
computation complexity. A comparative review of different data types used in
current tools and applications of Human Mobility studies leads us to new
approaches for dealing with mentioned challenges
Impact of the spatial context on human communication activity
Technology development produces terabytes of data generated by hu- man
activity in space and time. This enormous amount of data often called big data
becomes crucial for delivering new insights to decision makers. It contains
behavioral information on different types of human activity influenced by many
external factors such as geographic infor- mation and weather forecast. Early
recognition and prediction of those human behaviors are of great importance in
many societal applications like health-care, risk management and urban
planning, etc. In this pa- per, we investigate relevant geographical areas
based on their categories of human activities (i.e., working and shopping)
which identified from ge- ographic information (i.e., Openstreetmap). We use
spectral clustering followed by k-means clustering algorithm based on TF/IDF
cosine simi- larity metric. We evaluate the quality of those observed clusters
with the use of silhouette coefficients which are estimated based on the
similari- ties of the mobile communication activity temporal patterns. The area
clusters are further used to explain typical or exceptional communication
activities. We demonstrate the study using a real dataset containing 1 million
Call Detailed Records. This type of analysis and its application are important
for analyzing the dependency of human behaviors from the external factors and
hidden relationships and unknown correlations and other useful information that

Is spatial information in ICT data reliable?
An increasing number of human activities are studied using data produced by
individuals' ICT devices. In particular, when ICT data contain spatial
information, they represent an invaluable source for analyzing urban dynamics.
However, there have been relatively few contributions investigating the
robustness of this type of results against fluctuations of data
characteristics. Here, we present a stability analysis of higher-level
information extracted from mobile phone data passively produced during an
entire year by 9 million individuals in Senegal. We focus on two
information-retrieval tasks: (a) the identification of land use in the region
of Dakar from the temporal rhythms of the communication activity; (b) the
identification of home and work locations of anonymized individuals, which
enable to construct Origin-Destination (OD) matrices of commuting flows. Our
analysis reveal that the uncertainty of results highly depends on the sample
size, the scale and the period of the year at which the data were gathered.
Nevertheless, the spatial distributions of land use computed for different
samples are remarkably robust: on average, we observe more than 75% of shared
surface area between the different spatial partitions when considering activity
of at least 100,000 users whatever the scale. The OD matrix is less stable and
depends on the scale with a share of at least 75% of commuters in common when
considering all types of flows constructed from the home-work locations of
100,000 users. For both tasks, better results can be obtained at larger levels
of aggregation or by considering more users. These results confirm that ICT
data are very useful sources for the spatial analysis of urban systems, but

Uncovering Urban Temporal Patterns from Geo-Tagged Photography
We live in a world where digital trails of different forms of human activities compose big urban data, allowing us to detect many aspects of how people experience the city in which they live or come to visit. In this study we propose to enhance urban planning by taking into a consideration individual preferences using information from an unconventional big data source: dataset of geo-tagged photographs that people take in cities which we then use as a measure of urban attractiveness. We discover and compare a temporal behavior of residents and visitors in ten most photographed cities in the world. Looking at the periodicity in urban attractiveness, the results show that the strongest periodic patterns for visitors are usually weekly or monthly. Moreover, by dividing cities into two groups based on which continent they belong to (i.e., North America or Europe), it can be concluded that unlike European cities, behavior of visitors in the US cities in general is similar to the behavior of their residents. Finally, we apply two indices, called “dilatation attractiveness index” and “dilatation index”, to our dataset which tell us the spatial and temporal attractiveness pulsations in the city. Data from mobile phone operators: A tool for smarter cities?
Abstract The use of mobile phone data provides new spatio-temporal tools for improving urban planning, and for reducing inefficiencies in present-day urban systems. Data from mobile phones, originally intended as a communication tool, are increasingly used as innovative tools in geography and social sciences research. Empirical studies on complex city systems from human-centred and urban dynamics perspectives provide new insights to develop promising applications for supporting smart city initiatives. This paper provides a comprehensive review and a typology of spatial studies on mobile phone data, and highlights the applicability of such digital data to develop innovative applications for enhanced urban management
Multi-scale spatio-temporal analysis of human mobility
The recent availability of digital traces generated by phone calls and online logins has significantly increased the scientific understanding of human mobility. Until now, however, limited data resolution and coverage have hindered a coherent description of human displacements across different spatial and temporal scales. Here, we characterise mobility behaviour across several orders of magnitude by analysing ∼850 individuals' digital traces sampled every ∼16 seconds for 25 months with ∼10 meters spatial resolution. We show that the distributions of distances and waiting times between consecutive locations are best described by log-normal and gamma distributions, respectively, and that natural time-scales emerge from the regularity of human mobility. We point out that log-normal distributions also characterise the patterns of discovery of new places, implying that they are not a simple consequence of the routine of modern life
