    Proximal business intelligence on the semantic web

The official version can be accessed from the link below - Copyright @ 2010 Springer.Ubiquitous information systems (UBIS) extend current Information System thinking to explicitly differentiate technology between devices and software components with relation to people and process. Adapting business data and management information to support specific user actions in context is an ongoing topic of research. Approaches typically focus on providing mechanisms to improve specific information access and transcoding but not on how the information can be accessed in a mobile, dynamic and ad-hoc manner. Although web ontology has been used to facilitate the loading of data warehouses, less research has been carried out on ontology based mobile reporting. This paper explores how business data can be modeled and accessed using the web ontology language and then re-used to provide the invisibility of pervasive access; uncovering more effective architectural models for adaptive information system strategies of this type. This exploratory work is guided in part by a vision of business intelligence that is highly distributed, mobile and fluid, adapting to sensory understanding of the underlying environment in which it operates. A proof-of concept mobile and ambient data access architecture is developed in order to further test the viability of such an approach.     Inspirational Bits - Towards a Shared Understanding of the Digital Material

    In any design process, a medium’s properties need to be considered. This is nothing new in design. Still we find that in HCI and interactive systems design the properties of a technology are often glossed over. That is, technologies are black-boxed without much thought given to how their distinctive properties open up design possibilities. In this paper we describe what we call inspirational bits as a way to become more familiar with the design material in HCI, the digital material. We describe inspirational bits as quick and dirty but fully working systems in both hardware and software built with the aim of exposing one or several of the dynamic properties of a digital material. We also show how they provide a means of sharing design knowledge across the members of a multi-disciplined design team

    Transcranial magnetic stimulation and EEG in studies of brain function

    Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) combined with electroencephalography (EEG) is a multimodal technique, with a temporal resolution of submilliseconds, for studying cortical excitability and connectivity. When TMS is combined with neuronavigation, resulting in so-called navigated TMS (nTMS), the technique becomes very powerful. However, despite the potential of TMS–EEG, its use for studying lateral areas has been restricted because the TMS pulse induces strong muscle artifacts, making the EEG data useless for further analyses. In this Thesis, methods for analyzing TMS-evoked EEG data from lateral areas are introduced. First, TMS–EEG is used to study Broca's area and dorsal premotor cortex. Due to the fact that those areas are close to cranial muscles, their stimulation evokes large muscle artifacts in EEG recordings. The behavior of the artifacts is described in detail. Two approaches to deal with large artifacts are presented. In the first approach, independent component analysis (ICA) is used. Here, FastICA algorithm is modified to make the search of the components more robust and easier, allowing one to get more stable results. The second approach presents methods for suppressing the artifacts rather than removing them. These methods were combined with source localization showing that the artifact suppression is efficient. The methods were tested with both real and simulated data, suggesting they are useful for artifact correction. For a better understanding of the effects of repetitive nTMS during naming tasks and the cortical organization of speech in general, here another study is introduced to understand the sensitivity of object and action naming tasks to repetitive nTMS. The distributions of cortical sites, where repetitive nTMS produced naming errors during both tasks, are compared. Thus, it is shown how this study can impact on both cognitive neuroscience and clinical practice. In the last part, the beamformer method is improved to study source localization, which makes it a robust method to study time-correlated sources. In this Thesis, I discuss how all these methods together can contribute to study brain connectivity of language and lateral areas with TMS–EEG, opening new possibilities for basic research and clinical applications

    Wearable sensors system for an improved analysis of freezing of gait in Parkinson's disease using electromyography and inertial signals

    We propose a wearable sensor system for automatic, continuous and ubiquitous analysis of Freezing of Gait (FOG), in patients affected by Parkinson's disease. FOG is an unpredictable gait disorder with different clinical manifestations, as the trembling and the shuffling-like phenotypes, whose underlying pathophysiology is not fully understood yet. Typical trembling-like subtype features are lack of postural adaptation and abrupt trunk inclination, which in general can increase the fall probability. The targets of this work are detecting the FOG episodes, distinguishing the phenotype and analyzing the muscle activity during and outside FOG, toward a deeper insight in the disorder pathophysiology and the assessment of the fall risk associated to the FOG subtype. To this aim, gyroscopes and surface electromyography integrated in wearable devices sense simultaneously movements and action potentials of antagonist leg muscles. Dedicated algorithms allow the timely detection of the FOG episode and, for the first time, the automatic distinction of the FOG phenotypes, which can enable associating a fall risk to the subtype. Thanks to the possibility of detecting muscles contractions and stretching exactly during FOG, a deeper insight into the pathophysiological underpinnings of the different phenotypes can be achieved, which is an innovative approach with respect to the state of art

    Mathematical Framework for Accurate Prayer Times: Insights from the Bencet Tradition

    Establishing a crucial connection between religious practices and mathematics is essential for comprehending the regularity and temporal discipline inherent in fulfilling religious duties, notably observed in traditional tools like bencet for determining prayer times. This qualitative ethnographic study aims to unveil the mathematical concepts involved in using and crafting bencet. This exploration of bencet represents the first-ever study in the history of ethnomathematics. Data analysis using the Miles and Huberman model reveals that the community's unconscious use of bencet tongkat demonstrates mathematical concepts, particularly in parallel lines, measurements, and the need for flat sides. Meanwhile, crafting bencet garis showcases the community's unconscious understanding of mathematical concepts related to parallel lines, perpendicular lines, the use of circles for  angles, and measurements. These findings expand our understanding of cultural values and local wisdom, demonstrating their relevance to mathematical concepts. Furthermore, the study provides recommendations for future research, suggesting an exploration of ethnomathematics as an innovative alternative approach to learning

    Uncovering the specificities of CAD tools for industrial design with design theory – style models for generic singularity

    International audienceAccording to some casual observers, computer-aided design (CAD) tools are very similar. These tools are used to design new artifacts in a digital environment; hence, they share typical software components, such as a computing engine and human-machine interface. However, CAD software is dedicated to specific professionals—such as engineers, three-dimensional (3D) artists, and industrial designers (IDs)—who claim that, despite their apparent similarities, CAD tools are so different that they are not substitutable. Moreover, CAD tools do not fully meet the needs of IDs. This paper aims at better characterizing CAD tools by taking into account their underlying design logic, which involves relying on recent advances in design theory. We show that engineering CAD tools are actually modeling tools that design a generic variety of products; 3D artist CAD tools not only design but immediately produce single digital artefacts; and ID CAD tools are neither a mix nor an hybridization of engineering CAD and 3D artist CAD tools but have their own logic, namely to create new conceptual models for a large variety of products, that is, the creation of a unique original style that leads to a generic singularity. Such tools are useful for many creative designers beyond IDs
