Uncharted territory - environment and population beyond six billion
When historians in the far distant future look back upon the tumultuous twentieth century, they will likely judge the most outstanding feature to be the extraordinary increase in human numbers that has occurred during this relatively short time period. It took the entire history of humanity â tens of thousands of years â for the worldâs population to reach one billion, which is now estimated to have occurred around 1804. It was more than a century later that the second billion was reached. But it took only 12 years â from 1987 to 1999 --. for the most recent billion, the sixth, to be added. The world has never seen anything like the steep population growth of the twentieth century, with most of it concentrated during the last fifty years.
CLIL in lower secondary school: Uncharted territory
This MA thesis investigates the Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) method in a lower secondary public school. This thesis has a particular focus on low proficiency students and how they experience the method, and how they could be aided and assisted to be able to master the method. The thesis also provides an overview of the entire class and how the medium-, and high proficiency students perform.
The research is seen in light of exposure to extramural English input and output, and how exposure to extramural English is connected to a higher linguistic proficiency. Further the thesis explains why the CLIL method is relevant for Norwegian adolescentsâ English proficiency in light of the contextual situation they are in, as well as how the Norwegian teaching curriculum gives room for this kind of methodology.
The research is a mixed method approach that includes both qualitative and quantitative data. The data was collected through an intervention, observation, a survey, and several interviews, including both the studentsâ and the teacherâs view
Beyond Brexit: the impact of leaving the EU on the youth work sector
The UK having voted to leave the EU, Annette Coburn and SinĂ©ad Gormally consider potential problems and possibilities for youth work within post-Brexit Britain, with a focus on Scotland in particular. They outline how youth work has reached a âtipping pointâ in its evolution, where austerity measures have consistently undermined it. They examine the potential impact of the further loss of EU funding. Recognising that it is entirely uncharted territory, they assert that despite the inherent concerns, Brexit could also be a catalyst for re-imagining youth work as a creative and resistant practice within social and informal education
Uncharted Territory: Universal Credit, Couples and Money
This report presents findings from the first phase of the ESRC-funded project, âCouples balancing work, money and care: exploring the shifting landscape under Universal Creditâ â a three-year longitudinal, qualitative research study which examines the ways in which couples with and without children make decisions about work, care and household finances in relation to changes under Universal Credit

A historical outline of school architecture in Malta
Although the history of education in Malta is well documented, the architectural history of local educational facilities is still as yet uncharted territory. The available literature on the architecture of schools in The Maltese islands and their underlying design philosophy is almost non-existent. A tentative outline can only be sketched on the basis of the substantial corpus of surviving drawings, various ad hoc reports ar.d for the international style modern schools, built in the 1950's and 60's, by direct verbal communications with their architects. This paper will present a concise historical exposition on school architecture in Malta and Gozo.peer-reviewe
Genetic diversity and the origins of cultural fragmentation
Despite the importance attributed to the effects of diversity on the stability and prosperity of
nations, the origins of the uneven distribution of ethnic and cultural fragmentation across countries
have been underexplored. Building on the role of deeply-rooted biogeographical forces in comparative
development, this research empirically demonstrates that genetic diversity, predominantly
determined during the prehistoric âout of Africaâ migration of humans, is an underlying cause
of various existing manifestations of ethnolinguistic heterogeneity. Further exploration of this
uncharted territory may revolutionize the understanding of the effects of deeply-rooted factors on
economic development and the composition of human capital across the globe
Uncharted Territory: UVM Extension Data Visualization Needs Assessment
Graphical displays are more effective than textual information at summarizing large volumes of data, improving retention of information, and in persuading behavior change. UVM Extension uses data visualizations every day in its mission to transform academic research into practical recommendations for Vermonters, in topics ranging from nutrition to agriculture. But how are these graphics generated across an organization with more than 100 employees? How can data visualization help advance goals which range from analyzing research to demonstrating community impact? This paper presents the results of a Masterâs project study into what tools and skills are already being used at UVM Extension, and what could be done better. For this study, data were collected through an organization-wide survey, two interviews, and two case studies. Results suggest that numerous software packages are being utilized across the organization to design graphics, but they are not administered consistently or leveraged efficiently. In general, staff and faculty lack confidence in designing their own graphics, are unfamiliar with best practices, and are unsure where to go for help. Ultimately, this study reveals that UVM Extension could: 1) save costs by consolidating software accounts, and 2) improve quality by increasing staff capacity, establishing internal workflow protocols, and centralizing high-priority projects. By incorporating graphic design staff into the first steps of project planning, UVM Extension would ultimately elevate the quality of its storytelling
