Using ontology in query answering systems: Scenarios, requirements and challenges
Equipped with the ultimate query answering system, computers would finally be in a position to address all our information needs in a natural way. In this paper, we describe how Language and Computing nv (L&C), a developer of ontology-based natural language understanding systems for the healthcare domain, is working towards the ultimate Question Answering (QA) System for healthcare workers. L&C’s company strategy in this area is to design in a step-by-step fashion the essential components of such a system, each component being designed to solve some one part of the total problem and at the same time reflect well-defined needs on the prat of our customers. We compare our strategy with the research roadmap proposed by the Question Answering Committee of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), paying special attention to the role of ontology
Software for Embedded Control Systems
The research of our team deals with the realization of control schemes on digital computers. As such the emphasis is on embedded control software implementation. Applications are in the field of mechatronic devices, using a mechatronic design approach (the integrated and optimal design of a mechanical system and its embedded control system). The ultimate goal is to support the application developer (i.e. mechatronic design engineer) such that implementing control software according to Ă°o it the first time rightÂż becomes business as usual
Continuum computer architecture for exaflops computation
The ultimate computers in our long-term future will deliver exaflops-scale performance (or greater) and will look very different from today’s micro-processors and massively parallel computers. Ironically, however, their alien
structures and operational behavior can be inferred from the same technology trends driving development of today’s conventional computing systems

The Computational Power of Minkowski Spacetime
The Lorentzian length of a timelike curve connecting both endpoints of a
classical computation is a function of the path taken through Minkowski
spacetime. The associated runtime difference is due to time-dilation: the
phenomenon whereby an observer finds that another's physically identical ideal
clock has ticked at a different rate than their own clock. Using ideas
appearing in the framework of computational complexity theory, time-dilation is
quantified as an algorithmic resource by relating relativistic energy to an
th order polynomial time reduction at the completion of an observer's
journey. These results enable a comparison between the optimal quadratic
\emph{Grover speedup} from quantum computing and an speedup using
classical computers and relativistic effects. The goal is not to propose a
practical model of computation, but to probe the ultimate limits physics places
on computation.Comment: 6 pages, LaTeX, feedback welcom
Legal Problems of Data Base Technology
As computers become an integral part of court and business procedures, conflicts will arise that cannot be readily solved by traditional legal theories. Lawyers, acting as planners and advisers as well as advocates, must anticipate the potential problems presented by computers and provide a rational basis for their ultimate solution. In this Article, Judge David Dixon discusses the potential confidentiality problems created when a court uses a computer to collect information on the court’s operational efficiency. He notes that recording court opinions on computers may result in inaccuracies in addition to general problems of attributing and protecting ownership of data bank and program design. In conclusion, he urges the legal profession to design new protections to satisfy the unique requirements of computer use by private entities and the courts
Plasmonics for emerging quantum technologies
Expanding the frontiers of information processing technologies and, in
particular, computing with ever increasing speed and capacity has long been
recognized an important societal challenge, calling for the development of the
next generation of quantum technologies. With its potential to exponentially
increase computing power, quantum computing opens up possibilities to carry out
calculations that ordinary computers could not finish in the lifetime of the
Universe, while optical communications based on quantum cryptography become
completely secure. At the same time, the emergence of Big Data and the ever
increasing demands of miniaturization and energy saving technologies bring
about additional fundamental problems and technological challenges to be
addressed in scientific disciplines dealing with light-matter interactions. In
this context, quantum plasmonics represents one of the most promising and
fundamental research directions and, indeed, the only one that enables ultimate
miniaturization of photonic components for quantum optics when being taken to
extreme limits in light-matter interactions.Comment: To appear in Nanophotonic
