Initial synchronisation of wideband and UWB direct sequence systems: single- and multiple-antenna aided solutions
This survey guides the reader through the open literature on the principle of initial synchronisation in single-antenna-assisted single- and multi-carrier Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) as well as Direct Sequence-Ultra WideBand (DS-UWB) systems, with special emphasis on the DownLink (DL). There is a paucity of up-to-date surveys and review articles on initial synchronization solutions for MIMO-aided and cooperative systems - even though there is a plethora of papers on both MIMOs and on cooperative systems, which assume perfect synchronization. Hence this paper aims to ?ll the related gap in the literature
A low-cost time-hopping impulse radio system for high data rate transmission
We present an efficient, low-cost implementation of time-hopping impulse
radio that fulfills the spectral mask mandated by the FCC and is suitable for
high-data-rate, short-range communications. Key features are: (i) all-baseband
implementation that obviates the need for passband components, (ii) symbol-rate
(not chip rate) sampling, A/D conversion, and digital signal processing, (iii)
fast acquisition due to novel search algorithms, (iv) spectral shaping that can
be adapted to accommodate different spectrum regulations and interference
environments. Computer simulations show that this system can provide 110Mbit/s
at 7-10m distance, as well as higher data rates at shorter distances under FCC
emissions limits. Due to the spreading concept of time-hopping impulse radio,
the system can sustain multiple simultaneous users, and can suppress narrowband
interference effectively.Comment: To appear in EURASIP Journal on Applied Signal Processing (Special

Iterative Code Acquisition for DS-UWB Downlink using Multiple-Component Decoders
Iterative code acquisition schemes employing beneficially chosen higher-order generator polynomials and multiple-component decoders are analysed in terms of the correct detection probability of the direct sequence-ultra-wideband (DS-UWB) downlink. The proposed technique can maintain high acquisition performance, while reducing associated complexity by up to 30%
Initial Synchronisation in the Multiple-Input Multiple-Output Aided Single- and Multi-Carrier DS-CDMA as well as DS-UWB Downlink
In this thesis, we propose and investigate code acquisition schemes employing both colocated and cooperative Multiple Input/Multiple Output (MIMO) aided Single-Carrier (SC) and Multi-Carrier (MC) Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) DownLink (DL) schemes. We study their characteristics and performance in terms of both Non-Coherent (NC) and Differentially Coherent (DC) MIMO scenarios. Furthermore, we also propose iterative code acquisition schemes for the Direct Sequence-Ultra WideBand (DS-UWB) DL. There is a paucity of code acquisition techniques designed for transmit diversity aided systems. Moreover, there are no in-depth studies representing the fundamental characteristics of code acquisition schemes employing both co-located and cooperative MIMOs. Hence we investigate both NC and DC code acquisition schemes in the co-located and cooperative MIMO aided SC and MC DS-CDMA DL, when communicating over spatially uncorrelated Rayleigh channels. The issues of NC initial and post-initial acquisition schemes as well as DC schemes are studied as a function of the number of co-located antennas by quantifying the attainable correct detection probability and mean acquisition time performances. The research of DS-UWB systems has recently attracted a significant interest in both the academic and industrial community. In the DS-UWB DL, initial acquisition is required for both coarse timing as well as code phase alignment. Both of these constitute a challenging problem owing to the extremely short chip-duration of UWB systems. This leads to a huge acquisition search space size, which is represented as the product of the number of legitimate code phases in the uncertainty region of the PN code and the number of legitimate signalling pulse positions. Therefore the benefits of the iterative code acquisition schemes are analysed in terms of the achievable correct detection probability and mean acquisition time performances. Hence we significantly reduce the search space size with the aid of a Tanner graph based Message Passing (MP) technique, which is combined with the employment of beneficially selected generator polynomials, multiple receive antennas and appropriately designed multiple-component decoders. Finally, we characterise a range of two-stage iterative acquisition schemes employing iterative MP designed for a multiple receive antenna assisted DS-UWB DL scenario
UWB communication systems acquisition at symbol rate sampling for IEEE standard channel models
For ultra-wideband (UWB) communications, acquisition is challenging. The reason is from the ultra short pulse shape and ultra dense multipath interference. Ultra short pulse indicates the acquisition region is very narrow. Sampling is another challenge for UWB design due to the need for ultra high speed analog-to digital converter.A sub-optimum and under-sampling scheme using pilot codes as transmitted reference is proposed here for acquisition. The sampling rate for the receiver is at the symbol rate. A new architecture, the reference aided matched filter is studied in this project. The reference aided matched filter method avoids using complex rake receiver to estimate channel parameters and high sampling rate for interpolation. A limited number of matched filters are used as a filter bank to search for the strongest path. Timing offset for acquisition is then estimated and passed to an advanced verification algorithm. For optimum performance of acquisition, the adaptive post detection integration is proposed to solve the problem from dense inter-symbol interference during the acquisition. A low-complex early-late gate tracking loop is one element of the adaptive post detection integration. This tracking scheme assists in improving acquisition accuracy. The proposed scheme is evaluated using Matlab Simulink simulations in term of mean acquisition time, system performance and false alarm. Simulation results show proposed algorithm is very effective in ultra dense multipath channels. This research proves reference aided acquisition with tracking loop is promising in UWB application
Implementation Aspects of a Transmitted-Reference UWB Receiver
In this paper, we discuss the design issues of an ultra wide band (UWB) receiver targeting a single-chip CMOS implementation for low data-rate applications like ad hoc wireless sensor networks. A non-coherent transmitted reference (TR) receiver is chosen because of its small complexity compared to other architectures. After a brief recapitulation of the UWB fundamentals and a short discussion on the major differences between coherent and non-coherent receivers, we discuss issues, challenges and possible design solutions. Several simulation results obtained by means of a behavioral model are presented, together with an analysis of the trade-off between performance and complexity in an integrated circuit implementation

A Spatial RAKE receiver for Real-Time UWB-IR Applications
The concept of ultra wideband impulse radio has interesting properties.
The wide transmission band makes penetration through different ma
terials better than narrow band transmission. The lack of carrier may
be traded for low power solutions provided a power efficient receiver
may be implemented. Unlike narrow band radio, demanding statistical
computation must be carried out. This is often done in a parallel archi
tecture. Although several portable applications are striving for higher
bandwidth, there is an increasing demand for shortrange low bandwidth
mobile communication units. In several of these applications ultra low
power is important. In addition other properties of impulse radio trans
missions may be appreciated such as interference immunity and penet
ration.
The purpose of this thesis is to explore a lowpower solution for correlator
based impulse radio receivers. A mixedmode parallel RAKE structure is
realized in a standard 0.12 m CMOS technology. The receiver is imple
mented as a RAKE structure combining digital shift registers with analog
computation in a series of parallel taps of a synchronizing delay line. In
each parallel bit stream the incoming signal is crosscorrelated with a
stored template. By combining a delay line and a mixedmode correl
ator we can explore multipath reflections in a time domain statistical
computation for symbol recovery. Simulations are presented showing
promising results with regard to power consumption and overall func
tionality. Measurements are performed conforming the basic functional
ity of the circuit
