Whitehead's metaphysical interpretation of the meaning and growth of a human individual

Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston UniversityThe problem of this dissertation is to discover what metaphysical meaning, if any, Whitehead ascribes to the growth of personality as a revelation of the objective truth and value of a human individual. Since Whitehead does not deal systematically with this problem, the present writer must introduce categories of self-knowledge that exemplify the generic principles of his metaphysics in order to interpret his relavent insights. Accordingly, the pertinent passages from his writings are correlated and interpreted in terms of a coherent account of the sense and value content, the purposive activity, and the rational validity which human though and conduct involve. For the full meaning of a human individual cannot be understood apart from a casual explanation of his given experience in accordance with a rational criterion of metaphysical truth

Forschung und Publikation in der Wissenschaft: Wissenschaftsforschung Jahrbuch 2013

Das Neue in der Wissenschaft kann von anderen als seinem Schöpfer nur dann reproduziert werden, wenn es mit Angabe von Namen, Ort und Datum zitierbar publiziert wird, damit es von Wissenschaftlern anhand der zitierbaren Publikation zu jeder Zeit und an jedem Ort nachvollzogen werden kann. Wissenschaft ist publiziertes methodisches Problemlösen. Aus der Sicht der ökonomischen Verwertung wissenschaftlicher Forschung existiert ein fortwährender Zielkonflikt zwischen der Notwendigkeit eines Austausches von Erkenntnissen im Forschungsprozess, um durch eine kreative Rekombination und Prüfung von Ideen zu einer Erweiterung des Wissensbestandes zu gelangen, und der Attraktivität eines exklusiven Zugangs zu Erkenntnissen, um auf diese Weise über fortwährende Wettbewerbsvorteile zu verfügen. Solange eine eindeutige Trennung zwischen vorwettbewerblicher und ausschließlich auf Grundlagenerkenntnisse abzielende Forschung einerseits und marktbezogener Produktentwicklung durch Umsetzung der Forschungserkenntnisse andererseits gegeben ist, kann der Zielkonflikt durch eine Begrenzung des Publikationsinteresses auf die vorwettbewerbliche Phase gelöst werden. In den vergangenen Jahren wurde diese Eindeutigkeit der Trennung jedoch in Frage gestellt. Die Gesellschaft für Wissenschaftsforschung hat sich dieser Fragestellung angenommen und sie im Rahmen ihrer Jahrestagung im Institut für Bibliotheks- und Informationswissenschaft der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin am 22. März 2013 unter dem Thema „Forschung und Publikation in der Wissenschaft“ analysiert und diskutiert. Dabei ist es gelungen, theoretische Überlegungen mit historischen und aktuellen Fakten zu verbinden. Die Ergebnisse dieser Tagung werden in diesem Jahrbuch der Gesellschaft für Wissenschaftsforschung dem interessierten Leser vorgestellt.Peer Reviewe

The Virginian Sea bibliography

The bibliography of the Virginian Sea is a compendium of literature and environmental data concerning the Middle Atlantic Bight region of the Western North Atlantic - or the United States east coast. The geographical coverage of this bibliography ineludes that region extending from 41° N latitude to 36° N latitude and out 200 miles from the coastal headlands. This volume represents the first step of an effort undertaken by the Virginia Institute of Marine Science to assess the present status of knowledge concerning the physical and chemical environment, biology, and fisheries of the Virginian Sea. We do not put forth this work as a complete bibliography of the Virginian Sea. No bibliographic effort of this scope can attain one-hundred percent coverage. Certainly, however, this bibliography is quite representative of the scientific research that has been done in the Middle Atlantic Bight. Later editions will broaden the bibliographic coverage of this work, correcting omissions as they are noted and making necessary additions. We hope that this bibliography will be useful to government, science, and the private sector; and welcome suggestions and, criticisms which would lead to its improvement
