    Wind gust estimation for precise quasi - hovering control of quadrotor aircraft

    This paper focuses on the control of quadrotor vehicles without wind sensors that are required to accurately track low-speed trajectories in the presence of moderate yet unknown wind gusts. By modeling the wind disturbance as exogenous inputs, and assuming that compensation of its effects can be achieved through quasistatic vehicle motions, this paper proposes an innovative estimation and control scheme comprising a linear dynamic filter for the estimation of such unknown inputs and requiring only position and attitude information. The filter is built upon results from Unknown Input Observer theory and allows estimation of wind and vehicle state without measurement of the wind itself. A simple feedback control law can be used to compensate for the offset position error induced by the disturbance. The proposed filter is independent of the recovery control scheme used to nullify the tracking error, as long as the corresponding applied rotor speeds are available. The solution is first checked in simulation environment by using the Robot Operating System middleware and the Gazebo simulator and then experimentally validated with a quadcopter system flying with real wind sources

    A review of convex approaches for control, observation and safety of linear parameter varying and Takagi-Sugeno systems

    This paper provides a review about the concept of convex systems based on Takagi-Sugeno, linear parameter varying (LPV) and quasi-LPV modeling. These paradigms are capable of hiding the nonlinearities by means of an equivalent description which uses a set of linear models interpolated by appropriately defined weighing functions. Convex systems have become very popular since they allow applying extended linear techniques based on linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) to complex nonlinear systems. This survey aims at providing the reader with a significant overview of the existing LMI-based techniques for convex systems in the fields of control, observation and safety. Firstly, a detailed review of stability, feedback, tracking and model predictive control (MPC) convex controllers is considered. Secondly, the problem of state estimation is addressed through the design of proportional, proportional-integral, unknown input and descriptor observers.     Lateral Wind Estimation and Backstepping Compensation for Safer Self-Driving Racecars

    This paper addresses the lateral wind gust estimation and compensation problem for racecar models. A wind-sensorless solution, i.e. a solution not using direct wind measures, is proposed. More precisely, by modeling the wind disturbance as a fully unknown input signal, an input-state observer is derived using only information about the vehicle’s longitudinal speed and lateral pose relative to the road. The observer is characterized by a simple structure, explicit closed-form, direct implementability on a micro-controller, and dead-beat property, i.e. it ensures the convergence of the estimation error in a finite time. Moreover, leveraging on the reconstructed wind data, a backstepping wind-compensation controller is also proposed, allowing asymptotic tracking of a path with desired curvature and providing the end-user with a free control parameter specifying the desired tracking speed. Formal proofs of the estimation error and tracking error convergence are given. Performance evaluation of the proposed solution is obtained in simulation by closing in the loop the full nonlinear model of a real racecar, the Robocar system, with the proposed estimation and control method. Both the estimator and the controller are shown to outperform existing solutions, even in the presence of noisy measurements

    This paper proposes an integral sliding mode (ISM) based unknown input observer (UIO) which is able to perform fault diagnosis (FD) in condition of lack of knowledge of the plant model. In particular, a two-layer neural network (NN) is employed to estimate online the drift term of the system dynamics needed to compute the so-called integral sliding manifold. The weights of such a NN are updated online using adaptation laws directly derived from theoretical analysis, carried out in this paper.     Advances in state estimation, diagnosis and control of complex systems

    This dissertation intends to provide theoretical and practical contributions on estimation, diagnosis and control of complex systems, especially in the mathematical form of descriptor systems. The research is motivated by real applications, such as water networks and power systems, which require a control system to provide a proper management able to take into account their specific features and operating limits in presence of uncertainties related to their operation and failures from component malfunctions. Such a control system is expected to provide an optimal operation to obtain efficient and reliable performance. State estimation is an essential tool, which can be used not only for fault diagnosis but also for the controller design. To achieve a satisfactory robust performance, set theory is chosen to build a general framework for descriptor systems subject to uncertainties. Under certain assumptions, these uncertainties are propagated and bounded by deterministic sets that can be explicitly characterized at each iteration step. Moreover, set-invariance characterizations for descriptor systems are also of interest to describe the steady performance, which can also be used for active mode detection. For the controller design for complex systems, new developments of economic model predictive control (EMPC) are studied taking into account the case of underlying periodic behaviors. The EMPC controller is designed to be recursively feasible even with sudden changes in the economic cost function and the closed-loop convergence is guaranteed. Besides, a robust technique is plugged into the EMPC controller design to maintain these closed-loop properties in presence of uncertainties. Engineering applications modeled as descriptor systems are presented to illustrate these control strategies. From the real applications, some additional difficulties are solved, such as using a two-layer control strategy to avoid binary variables in real-time optimizations and using nonlinear constraint relaxation to deal with nonlinear algebraic equations in the descriptor model. Furthermore, the fault-tolerant capability is also included in the controller design for descriptor systems by means of the designed virtual actuator and virtual sensor together with an observer-based delayed controller.Esta tesis propone contribuciones de carácter teórico y aplicado para la estimación del estado, el diagnóstico y el control óptimo de sistemas dinámicos complejos en particular, para los sistemas descriptores, incluyendo la capacidad de tolerancia a fallos. La motivación de la tesis proviene de aplicaciones reales, como redes de agua y sistemas de energía, cuya naturaleza crítica requiere necesariamente un sistema de control para una gestión capaz de tener en cuenta sus características específicas y límites operativos en presencia de incertidumbres relacionadas con su funcionamiento, así como fallos de funcionamiento de los componentes. El objetivo es conseguir controladores que mejoren tanto la eficiencia como la fiabilidad de dichos sistemas. La estimación del estado es una herramienta esencial que puede usarse no solo para el diagnóstico de fallos sino también para el diseño del control. Con este fin, se ha decidido utilizar metodologías intervalares, o basadas en conjuntos, para construir un marco general para los sistemas de descriptores sujetos a incertidumbres desconocidas pero acotadas. Estas incertidumbres se propagan y delimitan mediante conjuntos que se pueden caracterizar explícitamente en cada instante. Por otra parte, también se proponen caracterizaciones basadas en conjuntos invariantes para sistemas de descriptores que permiten describir comportamientos estacionarios y resultan útiles para la detección de modos activos. Se estudian también nuevos desarrollos del control predictivo económico basado en modelos (EMPC) para tener en cuenta posibles comportamientos periódicos en la variación de parámetros o en las perturbaciones que afectan a estos sistemas. Además, se demuestra que el control EMPC propuesto garantiza la factibilidad recursiva, incluso frente a cambios repentinos en la función de coste económico y se garantiza la convergencia en lazo cerrado. Por otra parte, se utilizan técnicas de control robusto pata garantizar que las estrategias de control predictivo económico mantengan las prestaciones en lazo cerrado, incluso en presencia de incertidumbre. Los desarrollos de la tesis se ilustran con casos de estudio realistas. Para algunas de aplicaciones reales, se resuelven dificultades adicionales, como el uso de una estrategia de control de dos niveles para evitar incluir variables binarias en la optimización y el uso de la relajación de restricciones no lineales para tratar las ecuaciones algebraicas no lineales en el modelo descriptor en las redes de agua. Finalmente, se incluye también una contribución al diseño de estrategias de control con tolerancia a fallos para sistemas descriptores

    Precise Trajectory Tracking of Multi-Rotor UAVs Using Wind Disturbance Rejection Approach

    This paper discusses the resilience of the UAV quadrotor to wind disturbances. An unknown input-state observer is presented that uses the Lipschitz method to estimate the internal states and disturbances of the quadrotor and compensate for them by varying the velocities of the four rotors. The observer intends to use existing sensor measurements to estimate the unknown states of the quadrotor and reconstruct the three-dimensional wind disturbances. The estimated states and external disturbances are sent to the PD controller, which compensates for the disturbances to achieve the desired position and attitude, as well as robustness and accuracy. The Lipschitz observer was designed using the LMI approach, and the results were validated using Matlab/Simulink and using the Parrot Mambo mini quadrotor

    State estimation of a reducer order activated sludge model

    Wastewater treatment is a complex process that removes and eliminates contaminants from wastewater and converts them into an effluent suitable for reintroduction into the water cycle. The subsequent discharge of this effluent can have a significant impact on the environment, and this process is typically carried out within Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs). The waste residue generated during the treatment process is known as sludge and it is potentially hazardous. Hence, a primary objective of the WWTP is to process this sludge, ensuring it meets the necessary conditions for its intended use, i.e., a sewage plant. The goal of this project is the development and simulation of a WWTP by the implementation of a reduced order model. Furthermore, to be applied into a real-live application, which consisted of modelling the reduced model to be able to apply estimation methods to know the unknown components (or states) behavior in the plant. The inputs and measurements of those states were also unknown. Besides, the reduced model had to still represent the main processes and components from the original model without changing the behavior. To address the problem, extensive research on reduced-order models was undertaken to identify the most suitable model for practical application. The model used had to be implemented and verified to still maintain the same behavior. Later, applied the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) algorithm to estimate those unknown states. The Unknown Input Observer (UIO) and augmentation plant algorithms were implemented into the filter to better estimate all the states. In the project, the reduced-order model will be explored in three versions: non-linear, linear, and state space models, and these will be compared with the behavior of the actual model to validate their correct behavior. Then, the EKF, EKF with the UIO, and the EKF with the augmented plant will be tested in different scenarios, alternating between the unknown measurements and inputs of the states to be estimated, to find the best solution to the problem.     Fault Diagnosis Techniques for Linear Sampled Data Systems and a Class of Nonlinear Systems

    This thesis deals with the fault diagnosis design problem both for dynamical continuous time systems whose output signal are affected by fixed point quantization,\ud referred as sampled-data systems, and for two different applications whose dynamics are inherent high nonlinear: a remotely operated underwater vehicle and a scramjet-powered hypersonic vehicle.\ud Robustness is a crucial issue. In sampled-data systems, full decoupling of disturbance terms from faulty signals becomes more difficult after discretization.\ud In nonlinear processes, due to hard nonlinearity or the inefficiency of linearization, the “classical” linear fault detection and isolation and fault tolerant control methods may not be applied.\ud Some observer-based fault detection and fault tolerant control techniques are studied throughout the thesis, and the effectiveness of such methods are validated with simulations. The most challenging trade-off is to increase sensitivity to faults and robustness to other unknown inputs, like disturbances. Broadly speaking, fault detection filters are designed in order to generate analytical diagnosis functions, called residuals, which should be independent with respect to the system operating state and should be decoupled from disturbances. Decisions on the occurrence of a possible fault are therefore taken on the basis such residual signals
