    Supporting UAVs with Edge Computing: A Review of Opportunities and Challenges

    Over the last years, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have seen significant advancements in sensor capabilities and computational abilities, allowing for efficient autonomous navigation and visual tracking applications. However, the demand for computationally complex tasks has increased faster than advances in battery technology. This opens up possibilities for improvements using edge computing. In edge computing, edge servers can achieve lower latency responses compared to traditional cloud servers through strategic geographic deployments. Furthermore, these servers can maintain superior computational performance compared to UAVs, as they are not limited by battery constraints. Combining these technologies by aiding UAVs with edge servers, research finds measurable improvements in task completion speed, energy efficiency, and reliability across multiple applications and industries. This systematic literature review aims to analyze the current state of research and collect, select, and extract the key areas where UAV activities can be supported and improved through edge computing

    Satisfaction-Aware Data Offloading in Surveillance Systems

    In this thesis, exploiting Fully Autonomous Aerial Systems\u27 (FAAS) and Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) servers\u27 computing capabilities to introduce a novel data offloading framework to support the energy and time-efficient video processing in surveillance systems based on satisfaction games. A surveillance system is introduced consisting of Areas of Interest (AoIs), where a MEC server is associated with each AoI, and a FAAS is flying above the AoIs to support the IP cameras\u27 computing demands. Each IP camera adopts a utility function capturing its Quality of Service (QoS) considering the experienced time and energy overhead to offload and process remotely or locally the data. A non-cooperative game among the cameras is formulated to determine the amount of offloading data to the MEC server and/or the FAAS, and the novel concept of Satisfaction Equilibrium (SE) is introduced where the IP cameras satisfy their minimum QoS prerequisites instead of maximizing their performance by consuming additional system resources. A distributed learning algorithm determines the IP cameras\u27 stable data offloading. Also, a reinforcement learning algorithm indicates the FAAS\u27s movement among the AoIs exploiting the accuracy, timeliness, and certainty of the collected data by the IP cameras per AoI. Detailed numerical and comparative results are presented to show the operation and efficiency of the proposed framework

    Dangers associated with poor air quality are driving deployments of air quality monitoring technology worldwide. Having a comprehensive understanding of the health effects of pollutants requires understanding both the distribution and dispersion of pollutants in the environment, but currently this information is highly difficult to capture. This article presents a vision for city-scale air pollution monitoring that uses unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to complement current ground and infrastructure-based measurements with a vertical profile of pollutants. We highlight the key requirements and research challenges, demonstrate the benefits UAVs bring through measurements from an industrial and a residential location, and establish a research roadmap for the path forward.Peer reviewe

    Towards UAV Assisted 5G Public Safety Network

    Ensuring ubiquitous mission-critical public safety communications (PSC) to all the first responders in the public safety network is crucial at an emergency site. The first responders heavily rely on mission-critical PSC to save lives, property, and national infrastructure during a natural or human-made emergency. The recent advancements in LTE/LTE-Advanced/5G mobile technologies supported by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) have great potential to revolutionize PSC. However, limited spectrum allocation for LTE-based PSC demands improved channel capacity and spectral efficiency. An additional challenge in designing an LTE-based PSC network is achieving at least 95% coverage of the geographical area and human population with broadband rates. The coverage requirement and efficient spectrum use in the PSC network can be realized through the dense deployment of small cells (both terrestrial and aerial). However, there are several challenges with the dense deployment of small cells in an air-ground heterogeneous network (AG-HetNet). The main challenges which are addressed in this research work are integrating UAVs as both aerial user and aerial base-stations, mitigating inter-cell interference, capacity and coverage enhancements, and optimizing deployment locations of aerial base-stations. First, LTE signals were investigated using NS-3 simulation and software-defined radio experiment to gain knowledge on the quality of service experienced by the user equipment (UE). Using this understanding, a two-tier LTE-Advanced AG-HetNet with macro base-stations and unmanned aerial base-stations (UABS) is designed, while considering time-domain inter-cell interference coordination techniques. We maximize the capacity of this AG-HetNet in case of a damaged PSC infrastructure by jointly optimizing the inter-cell interference parameters and UABS locations using a meta-heuristic genetic algorithm (GA) and the brute-force technique. Finally, considering the latest specifications in 3GPP, a more realistic three-tier LTE-Advanced AG-HetNet is proposed with macro base-stations, pico base-stations, and ground UEs as terrestrial nodes and UABS and aerial UEs as aerial nodes. Using meta-heuristic techniques such as GA and elitist harmony search algorithm based on the GA, the critical network elements such as energy efficiency, inter-cell interference parameters, and UABS locations are all jointly optimized to maximize the capacity and coverage of the AG-HetNet

    The United States’ (US) military unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has seen increased usage under the post 9/11 military engagements in the Middle East, Afghanistan, and within American borders. However, the very digital networks controlling these aircrafts are now enduring malicious intrusions (hacking) by America’s enemies. . The digital intrusions serve as a presage over the very digital networks the US relies upon to safeguard its national security and interests and domestic territory. The complexity surrounding the hacking of US military UAVs appears to be increasing, given the advancements in digital networks and the seemingly inauspicious nature of artificial intelligence and autonomous systems. Being most victimized by malicious digital intrusions, the US continues its military components towards growing dependence upon digital networks in advancing warfare and national security and interests. Thus, America’s netcentric warfare perspectives may perpetuate a chaotic environment where the use of military force is the sole means of safeguarding its digital networks
