Codes of traditional and un-desecrated landscape are priceless values of a country – a society. They represent continuum and catholicity, and because of that they are absolute value, which should be brought up in a function of improvement, so it can become significant element of development, progress and part of broader network. When this values experience collapse or they are brought up to misbalance, it leads to creating of space in which pattern of place can easily disappear. Pattern or matrix which witnesses on existing of urban typology and continuum of settlement is extremely important for every society. Bosnia and Herzegovina, country with rich, but in the same time complicated past, is with latest war brought in state of disappearance of certain patterns. Taking in count importance and necessity of bringing back the patterns in space, it was essential to find appropriate course and strategies, which will hold retrieved matrix stable.Peer Reviewe

"Penguins don't fly": An investigation into the effect of typicality on picture naming in people with aphasia.

    Get PDF
Previous research has highlighted psycholinguistic variables influencing naming ability for individuals with aphasia, including: familiarity, frequency, age of acquisition, imageability, operativity, and length (Nickels & Howard, 1995) and a potential link between typicality and generalisation to untreated items in intervention (Kiran, Sandberg, & Sebastian, 2011). However, the effect of concept typicality (the extent to which an item can be considered a prototype of a category) on naming in aphasia warrants further examination

The double-edged sword of exemplar similarity

    Get PDF
We investigate how a firm’s positioning relative to category exemplars shapes security analysts’ evaluations. Employing a two-stage model of evaluation (initial screening and subsequent assessment), we propose that exemplar similarity enhances a firm’s recognizability and legitimacy, increasing the likelihood that it passes the initial screening stage and attracts analyst coverage. However, exemplar similarity may also prompt unfavorable comparisons with exemplar firms, leading to lower analyst recommendations in the assessment stage. We further argue that category coherence, distinctiveness, and exemplar typicality influence the impact of exemplar similarity on firm evaluation. Leveraging Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques to analyze a sample of 7,603 US public firms from 1997 to 2022, we find robust support for our predictions. By highlighting the intricate role of strategic positioning vis-àvis category exemplars in shaping audience evaluations, our findings have important implications for research on positioning relative to category exemplars, category viability, optimal distinctiveness and security analysts

Comparative model for classification of forest degradation

    Get PDF
The challenges of forest degradation together with its related effects have attracted research from diverse disciplines, resulting in different definitions of the concept. However, according to a number of researchers, the central element of this issue is human intrusion that destroys the state of the environment. Therefore, the focus of this research is to develop a comparative model using a large amount of multi-spectral remote sensing data, such as IKONOS, QUICKBIRD, SPOT, WORLDVIEW-1, Terra-SARX, and fused data to detect forest degradation in Cameron Highlands. The output of this method in line with the performance measurement model. In order to identify the best data, fused data and technique to be employed. Eleven techniques have been used to develop a Comparative technique by applying them on fifteen sets of data. The output of the Comparative technique was used to feed the performance measurement model in order to enhance the accuracy of each classification technique. Moreover, a Performance Measurement Model has been used to verify the results of the Comparative technique; and, these outputs have been validated using the reflectance library. In addition, the conceptual hybrid model proposed in this research will give the opportunity for researchers to establish a fully automatic intelligent model for future work. The results of this research have demonstrated the Neural Network (NN) to be the best Intelligent Technique (IT) with a 0.912 of the Kappa coefficient and 96% of the overall accuracy, Mahalanobis had a 0.795 of the Kappa coefficient and 88% of the overall accuracy and the Maximum likelihood (ML) had a 0.598 of the Kappa coefficient and 72% of the overall accuracy from the best fused image used in this research, which was represented by fusing the IKONOS image with the QUICKBIRD image as finally employed in the Comparative technique for improving the detectability of forest change

    Essays on diffusion and categories

Essay’ derives from the French ‘to try’. Accordingly, in this book, I try three new interpretations of diffusion and categories. That is, I try to divide observations into groups in a new way. Some ways of dividing lead to confusion and frustration. For example, people’s default division seems to be ‘good’ and ‘bad’, or ‘like’ and ‘dislike’. Observations such as, for instance, high rates of domestic violence in marriages of American football players are confusing given this division, because people like football but dislike violence. The fact that the same person is in both of these opposing categories causes cognitive dissonance. In contrast, a meaningful division, such as ‘aggressive people’ and ‘timid people’, leads to consistency and peace of mind; football players are selected for their aggressiveness and domestic violence is an expression of aggressiveness. Likewise, each chapter tries a new way of grouping observations about organizations. Trying an interpretation involves describing what that interpretation means. The meaning of an interpretation is anchored in less abstract observations that are associated with it (e.g. examples). Practically, this means I make hypotheses about what we would observe if the interpretation were true. For example, in the third chapter I try to interpret industries as being divided into two groups: ‘generic categories are salient’ and ‘specific categories are salient’. Observations such as high correlation between subcategory density and entries in industries with many subcategories are consistent with the associations of the grouping; many subcategories makes specific categories more salient and specific category saliency is expressed in subcategory density’s correlation with entries. If the observations are in line with what the interpretation means, then the interpretation I try is meaningfu

AMERICAN PARASOCIAL INTERACTIONS WITH FICTIONAL LATTER-DAY SAINTS

Despite increased media coverage, the American public’s opinion towards the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints has stagnated. Most LDS media studies consist of self-contained content analyses or on the impact of real world individuals, with few academic findings on the impact fictional LDS characters have on audiences. This study was to see if exposure to fictional LDS affected attitudes towards real-life members. Building upon the parasocial contact hypothesis, rooted in the intergroup contact hypothesis, subjects were split into groups where they may or may not fill out a pre-test questionnaire. They then viewed video reels featuring LDS characters made by non-LDS creators with certain emotional coding. Afterwards, they would fill out a posttest questionnaire measuring attitudes towards real life Latter-Day Saints following content exposure. The research only proved partial significance that the amount of prior contact with Latter-Day Saints, as well as prior knowledge of LDS doctrine, affected how a subject views real-world Latter-Day Saints following content exposure. Subject responses towards specific characters implied a division between characters considered to be likable versus those typical of perceived real-world LDS

The short food supply chains’ phenomenon: a multidisciplinary approach to explore consumer behaviour and preferences

In recent years, the erosion of consumers’ confidence in industrialized agro-food systems and their increasing reflexivity known as “quality turn” have led to the promotion of Short Food Supply Chains (SFSCs) as opposite to conventional markets. SFSCs have the potential to enhance the sustainability of conventional food systems in terms of socio-economic equity and environmental and local development, addressing post-modern consumer’s habits and purchasing motivations that are extremely heterogeneous in natures. In addition, the renewed EU Common Agricultural Policy 2014-2020 encourages the promotion of SFSCs for the first time through a specific financial support within its II pillar, providing a publicly funded stimulus for sustainable development. This research aims at contributing to the growing literature on SFSCs, investigating consumer preferences and behavior towards purchasing food in such alternative schemes through a multidisciplinary approach. Based on some preliminary qualitative findings, this research explores the importance of some major drivers in influencing consumers’ preferences and purchasing behavior (i.e., sustainability, trust, fairness) more in depth. The broader objective is to provide new knowledge around SFSCs’ growing appeal among consumers, focusing especially on Italy, to explain their recent increasing in number. From a socio-psychological approach, i.e. the Theory of Planned Behavior, the research turns to economic theory with a choice experiment (CE) based on an hypothetical market situation and focusing on farmers’ markets. Italian consumers have been also compared with Brazilian and German consumers. Generally speaking, findings show the important role of sustainability and trust in influencing food purchases at SFSCs, as well as consumers’ renewed emphasis on both some traditional marketing patterns (i.e., face-to-face interactions with the producer) and the possibility to contribute to farmers’ income

"Heritage Marketing: a case study in the perfume sector"

The increase of ever more numerous competitions in established markets, the breaking of the traditional cultural sector’s boundaries and the search for a sustainable competitive advantage, have led companies to consider new organizational strategies instead of those usually used, particularly to consider the “Heritage Marketing Strategy” to achieve the much-desired success and face the different challenges that arise in dynamic markets (Keith, 1960; Kotler et all., 1999; Gentile et all., 2007; Kurtz and Boone, 2010). “Heritage Marketing” is a strategic choice for the companies that intend to use their “Heritage”, the expression of their identity which is constantly evolving (Brown et al., 2009), to vehicle its corporate identity and image in an effective and engaging way to a wider target audience; and to grasp their organizational changes and processes and create innovation. At the same time, it is a philosophy and a management process that helps consumers to associate meanings and values to products and services, using the “Heritage” of a firm as a strategic resource. Moreover, it could be seen as an effective strategy aimed to sell new company products on the market or to design new advertising campaigns, as well as new packaging. The purpose of this dissertation is to understand the role and the usefulness of Vidal’s heritage bringing to light the historical elements that can be reused by Mavive to achieve its strategic objectives. Specifically, how each of Vidal’s heritage variables could contribute to Mavive’s communication in order to provide qualitative data in support to the implementation of Mavive’s heritage marketing strategy. We believe that Vidal’s heritage could represent a source of competitive advantage for Mavive. More precisely, Vidal’s legacy, if properly managed, could generate economic and social value both for Mavive and for the different interest bearers. This could in turn facilitate the establishment of long-term relationships with stakeholders, and the strengthening of the company’s corporate identity, giving added value to a legacy that cannot be forgotten but should rather be capitalize upon. The research on this case study was performed through a qualitative approach that proceeds firstly with a preliminary investigation of the material and documents previously collected and cataloged with the first and the second archival interventions, considering in the analysis of Vidal’s Heritage only the latest version of the archive structure presented by Giorgia Battaglia. Secondly, by a qualitative analysis consisting in the comparison of the heterogeneous variables belonging to the categories of the theoretical framework proposed by Riviezzo, Garofano and Napolitano (2021) with those effectively found in Vidal Business Archive and those that meet the aforementioned categorizations. At the end, of each analysis, we have proposed a summary of the potential advantages of each tool, highlighting the potential benefits to Mavive’s corporate communication
