Type systems for distributed programs: session communication
Distributed systems are everywhere around us and guaranteeing their correctness is of paramount importance. It is natural to expect that these systems interact and communicate among them to achieve a common task.
In this work, we develop techniques based on types and type systems for the verification of correctness, consistency and safety properties related to communication in complex distributed systems. We study advanced safety properties related to communication, like deadlock or lock freedom and progress. We study session types in the pi-calculus describing distributed systems and communication-centric computation. Most importantly, we de- fine an encoding of the session pi-calculus into the standard typed pi-calculus in order to understand the expressive power of these concurrent calculi. We show how to derive in the session pi-calculus basic properties, like type safety or complex ones, like progress, by exploiting this encoding
Static Trace-Based Deadlock Analysis for Synchronous Mini-Go
We consider the problem of static deadlock detection for programs in the Go
programming language which make use of synchronous channel communications. In
our analysis, regular expressions extended with a fork operator capture the
communication behavior of a program. Starting from a simple criterion that
characterizes traces of deadlock-free programs, we develop automata-based
methods to check for deadlock-freedom. The approach is implemented and
evaluated with a series of examples
A Graphical Approach to Progress for Structured Communication in Web Services
We investigate a graphical representation of session invocation
interdependency in order to prove progress for the pi-calculus with sessions
under the usual session typing discipline. We show that those processes whose
associated dependency graph is acyclic can be brought to reduce. We call such
processes transparent processes. Additionally, we prove that for well-typed
processes where services contain no free names, such acyclicity is preserved by
the reduction semantics.
Our results encompass programs (processes containing neither free nor
restricted session channels) and higher-order sessions (delegation).
Furthermore, we give examples suggesting that transparent processes constitute
a large enough class of processes with progress to have applications in modern

The Geometry of Synchronization (Long Version)
We graft synchronization onto Girard's Geometry of Interaction in its most
concrete form, namely token machines. This is realized by introducing
proof-nets for SMLL, an extension of multiplicative linear logic with a
specific construct modeling synchronization points, and of a multi-token
abstract machine model for it. Interestingly, the correctness criterion ensures
the absence of deadlocks along reduction and in the underlying machine, this
way linking logical and operational properties.Comment: 26 page
Pabble: parameterised Scribble
© 2014, The Author(s).Many parallel and distributed message-passing programs are written in a parametric way over available resources, in particular the number of nodes and their topologies, so that a single parallel program can scale over different environments. This article presents a parameterised protocol description language, Pabble, which can guarantee safety and progress in a large class of practical, complex parameterised message-passing programs through static checking. Pabble can describe an overall interaction topology, using a concise and expressive notation, designed for a variable number of participants arranged in multiple dimensions. These parameterised protocols in turn automatically generate local protocols for type checking parameterised MPI programs for communication safety and deadlock freedom. In spite of undecidability of endpoint projection and type checking in the underlying parameterised session type theory, our method guarantees the termination of end point projection and type checking
Dynamic Choreographies: Theory And Implementation
Programming distributed applications free from communication deadlocks and
race conditions is complex. Preserving these properties when applications are
updated at runtime is even harder. We present a choreographic approach for
programming updatable, distributed applications. We define a choreography
language, called Dynamic Interaction-Oriented Choreography (AIOC), that allows
the programmer to specify, from a global viewpoint, which parts of the
application can be updated. At runtime, these parts may be replaced by new AIOC
fragments from outside the application. AIOC programs are compiled, generating
code for each participant in a process-level language called Dynamic
Process-Oriented Choreographies (APOC). We prove that APOC distributed
applications generated from AIOC specifications are deadlock free and race free
and that these properties hold also after any runtime update. We instantiate
the theoretical model above into a programming framework called Adaptable
Interaction-Oriented Choreographies in Jolie (AIOCJ) that comprises an
integrated development environment, a compiler from an extension of AIOCs to
distributed Jolie programs, and a runtime environment to support their

Session Types in a Linearly Typed Multi-Threaded Lambda-Calculus
We present a formalization of session types in a multi-threaded
lambda-calculus (MTLC) equipped with a linear type system, establishing for the
MTLC both type preservation and global progress. The latter (global progress)
implies that the evaluation of a well-typed program in the MTLC can never reach
a deadlock. As this formulated MTLC can be readily embedded into ATS, a
full-fledged language with a functional programming core that supports both
dependent types (of DML-style) and linear types, we obtain a direct
implementation of session types in ATS. In addition, we gain immediate support
for a form of dependent session types based on this embedding into ATS.
Compared to various existing formalizations of session types, we see the one
given in this paper is unique in its closeness to concrete implementation. In
particular, we report such an implementation ready for practical use that
generates Erlang code from well-typed ATS source (making use of session types),
thus taking great advantage of the infrastructural support for distributed
