Type-Based Detection of XML Query-Update Independence
This paper presents a novel static analysis technique to detect XML
query-update independence, in the presence of a schema. Rather than types, our
system infers chains of types. Each chain represents a path that can be
traversed on a valid document during query/update evaluation. The resulting
independence analysis is precise, although it raises a challenging issue:
recursive schemas may lead to infer infinitely many chains. A sound and
complete approximation technique ensuring a finite analysis in any case is
presented, together with an efficient implementation performing the chain-based
analysis in polynomial space and time.Comment: VLDB201
State-of-the-art on evolution and reactivity
This report starts by, in Chapter 1, outlining aspects of querying and updating resources on
the Web and on the Semantic Web, including the development of query and update languages
to be carried out within the Rewerse project.
From this outline, it becomes clear that several existing research areas and topics are of
interest for this work in Rewerse. In the remainder of this report we further present state of
the art surveys in a selection of such areas and topics. More precisely: in Chapter 2 we give
an overview of logics for reasoning about state change and updates; Chapter 3 is devoted to briefly describing existing update languages for the Web, and also for updating logic programs;
in Chapter 4 event-condition-action rules, both in the context of active database systems and
in the context of semistructured data, are surveyed; in Chapter 5 we give an overview of some relevant rule-based agents frameworks
Vision systems with the human in the loop
The emerging cognitive vision paradigm deals with vision systems that apply machine learning and automatic reasoning in order to learn from what they perceive. Cognitive vision systems can rate the relevance and consistency of newly acquired knowledge, they can adapt to their environment and thus will exhibit high robustness. This contribution presents vision systems that aim at flexibility and robustness. One is tailored for content-based image retrieval, the others are cognitive vision systems that constitute prototypes of visual active memories which evaluate, gather, and integrate contextual knowledge for visual analysis. All three systems are designed to interact with human users. After we will have discussed adaptive content-based image retrieval and object and action recognition in an office environment, the issue of assessing cognitive systems will be raised. Experiences from psychologically evaluated human-machine interactions will be reported and the promising potential of psychologically-based usability experiments will be stressed
XQuery!: An XML Query Language with Side Effects
Abstract. As XML applications become more complex, there is a growing interest in extending XQuery with side-effect operations, notably XML updates. However, the presence of side-effects is at odds with XQuery’s declarative semantics which leaves evaluation order unspecified. In this paper, we define “XQuery!”, an extension of XQuery 1.0 that supports first-class XML updates and user-level control over update application, preserving the benefits of XQuery’s declarative semantics when possible. Our extensions can be easily implemented within an existing XQuery processor and we show how to recover basic database optimizations for such a language.
SWI-Prolog and the Web
Where Prolog is commonly seen as a component in a Web application that is
either embedded or communicates using a proprietary protocol, we propose an
architecture where Prolog communicates to other components in a Web application
using the standard HTTP protocol. By avoiding embedding in external Web servers
development and deployment become much easier. To support this architecture, in
addition to the transfer protocol, we must also support parsing, representing
and generating the key Web document types such as HTML, XML and RDF.
This paper motivates the design decisions in the libraries and extensions to
Prolog for handling Web documents and protocols. The design has been guided by
the requirement to handle large documents efficiently. The described libraries
support a wide range of Web applications ranging from HTML and XML documents to
Semantic Web RDF processing.

A Comparative Study: Change Detection and Querying Dynamic XML Documents
The efficient management of the dynamic XML documents is a complex area of research. The changes and size of the XML documents throughout its lifetime are limitless. Change detection is an important part of version management to identify difference between successive versions of a document. Document content is continuously evolving. Users wanted to be able to query previous versions, query changes in documents, as well as to retrieve a particular document version efficiently. In this paper we provide comprehensive comparative analysis of various control schemes for change detection and querying dynamic XML documents
The ACCENT Policy Server
The designs expressed in this report are copyright of the University of Stirling. Certain aspects may also be protected by patents held by Mitel Networks Corporation. Publication of this report does not confer the right to use or adapt these designs in whole or in part. The ACCENT project was concerned with developing a practical and comprehensive policy language for call control. The project therefore studied a number of distinct tasks: the definition of the language, and also a threelayer architecture for deploying and enforcing policies defined in the language. This document focuses on the policy system layer of the three-layer architecture. The policy system layer is concerned with storing, deploying and enforcing policies. It represents the core functionality of the three-layer architecture. This report discusses the prototype implementation at a technical level. It is intended as supporting documentation for developers continuing to enhance the prototype, as well as those wishing to gain an insight into the technical details of the policy server layer
