Conduction of Ultracold Fermions Through a Mesoscopic Channel
In a mesoscopic conductor electric resistance is detected even if the device
is defect-free. We engineer and study a cold-atom analog of a mesoscopic
conductor. It consists of a narrow channel connecting two macroscopic
reservoirs of fermions that can be switched from ballistic to diffusive. We
induce a current through the channel and find ohmic conduction, even for a
ballistic channel. An analysis of in-situ density distributions shows that in
the ballistic case the chemical potential drop occurs at the entrance and exit
of the channel, revealing the presence of contact resistance. In contrast, a
diffusive channel with disorder displays a chemical potential drop spread over
the whole channel. Our approach opens the way towards quantum simulation of
mesoscopic devices with quantum gases
Gaussian Broadcast Channels with an Orthogonal and Bidirectional Cooperation Link
This paper considers a system where one transmitter broadcasts a single
common message to two receivers linked by a bidirectional cooperation channel,
which is assumed to be orthogonal to the downlink channel. Assuming a
simplified setup where, in particular, scalar relaying protocols are used and
channel coding is not exploited, we want to provide elements of response to
several questions of practical interest. Here are the main underlying issues:
1. The way of recombining the signals at the receivers; 2. The optimal number
of cooperation rounds; 3. The way of cooperating (symmetrically or
asymmetrically; which receiver should start cooperating in the latter case); 4.
The influence of spectral resources. These issues are considered by studying
the performance of the assumed system through analytical results when they are
derivable and through simulation results. For the particular choices we made,
the results sometimes do not coincide with those available for the discrete
counterpart of the studied channel
LDPC Code Design for Noncoherent Physical Layer Network Coding
This work considers optimizing LDPC codes in the physical-layer network coded
two-way relay channel using noncoherent FSK modulation. The error-rate
performance of channel decoding at the relay node during the multiple-access
phase was improved through EXIT-based optimization of Tanner graph variable
node degree distributions. Codes drawn from the DVB-S2 and WiMAX standards were
used as a basis for design and performance comparison. The computational
complexity characteristics of the standard codes were preserved in the
optimized codes by maintaining the extended irregular repeat-accumulate (eIRA).
The relay receiver performance was optimized considering two modulation orders
M = {4, 8} using iterative decoding in which the decoder and demodulator refine
channel estimates by exchanging information. The code optimization procedure
yielded unique optimized codes for each case of modulation order and available
channel state information. Performance of the standard and optimized codes were
measured using Monte Carlo simulation in the flat Rayleigh fading channel, and
error rate improvements up to 1.2 dB are demonstrated depending on system
parameters.Comment: Six pages, submitted to 2015 IEEE International Conference on

Design and Evaluation of Digital Baseband Converter Sub-channel Delay Compensation Method on Bandwidth Synthesis
The effect of sub-channel delay on bandwidth synthesis is investigated to eliminate the “phase step” phenomenon in bandwidth synthesis during the test of CDBE (Chinese Digital Backend). Through formula derivation, we realize that sub-channel delay may cause phase discontinuity between different sub-channels. Theoretical analysis shows that sub-channel delay can induce bandwidth synthesis error in group delay measurement of the linear system. Furthermore, in the differential delay measurement between two stations, bandwidth synthesis error may occur when the LO (Local Oscillator) frequency differences of corresponding sub-channels are not identical. Error-free conditions are discussed under different applications. The phase errors among different sub-channels can be removed manually. However, the most effective way is the compensation of sub-channel delay. A sub-channel delay calculation method based on Modelsim is proposed. The compensation method is detailed. Simulation and field experiments are presented to verify our approach
