CMOS Low-Noise Amplifier Design for Reconfigurable Mobile Terminals
Communication standards developed in Europe, Japan and USA are not compatible with each other. This is a profound drawback particularly in the digital cellular telephony, where there is no common standard up to now. The variety of wireless standards leads to some disadvantages, therefore the need for reconfigurability seems to be evident. A reconfigurable terminal should be able to support different standards. Reasonable integration of different standards may include standards, which belong to the same family (e.g., GSM), but are developed in different continents. Such terminals have been already produced and a broad offer exists on the market. A rather new approach of the standard integration is the combination of different families of standards, for example between wireless data and digital cellular telephony like UMTS with WLAN or HIPERLAN. In this case, nearly all parameters defining a standard are different. In the scope of this work the multistandard, reconfigurable terminal is considered that supports the OFDM based WLAN standards (IEEE802.11 and Hiperlan/2) and the CDMA based UMTS FDD standard. Special consideration has been made for the receiver of this terminal. A reconfigurable hybrid architecture has been developed, rather than an architecture using many parallel switchable transceivers. Additionally to the hybrid architecture, a study on RF impairments is given. The second part of this work handles with transistor physics and low noise amplifier design for a reconfigurable receiver, defined earlier. Since the small FET sizes of state of the art sub-micron RF-MOS-technologies have low capacitance values, thus large inductors are needed for matching. Because of theirs large dimensions they are placed off-chip. For this reason, the pad capacitance can not be longer neglected in the design process. % It is shown that the noise figure of low-noise amplifiers can be improved considerably by a proper choice of passive components. A design methodology is introduced, which reduces the equivalent noise resistance, and thus very good noise performance can be achieved in spite of rather poor noise matching. The measurements of the amplifier, in respect to the noise performance and power consumption, show very good results, one of the best ever reported. 0.76 dB noise figure and 12 dB gain were achieved at 2.14~GHz, 3.5 mA supply current and 1.2 V supply voltage
Transmissores reconfiguráveis para rádios definidos por software
Doutoramento em Engenharia ElectrotécnicaFlexible radio transmitters based on the Software-Defined Radio (SDR) concept are gaining an increased research importance due to the unparalleled proliferation of new wireless standards operating at different frequencies, using dissimilar coding and modulation schemes, and targeted for different ends. In this new wireless communications paradigm, the physical layer of the radio transmitter must be able to support the simultaneous transmission of multi-band, multi-rate, multi-standard signals, which in practice is very hard or very inefficient to implement using conventional approaches. Nevertheless, the last developments in this field include novel all-digital transmitter architectures where the radio datapath is digital from the baseband up to the RF stage. Such concept has inherent high flexibility and poses an important step towards the development of SDR-based transmitters. However, the truth is that implementing such radio for a real world communications scenario is a challenging task, where a few key limitations are still preventing a wider adoption of this concept.
This thesis aims exactly to address some of these limitations by proposing and implementing innovative all-digital transmitter architectures with inherent higher flexibility and integration, and where improving important figures of merit, such as coding efficiency, signal-to-noise ratio, usable bandwidth and in-band and out-of-band noise will also be addressed. In the first part of this thesis, the concept of transmitting RF data using an entirely digital approach based on pulsed modulation is introduced. A comparison between several implementation technologies is also presented, allowing to state that FPGAs provide an interesting compromise between performance, power efficiency and flexibility, thus making them an interesting choice as an enabling technology for pulse-based all-digital transmitters. Following this discussion, the fundamental concepts inherent to pulsed modulators, its key advantages, main limitations and typical enhancements suitable for all-digital transmitters are also presented. The recent advances regarding the two most common classes of pulse modulated transmitters, namely the RF and the baseband-level are introduced, along with several examples of state-of-the-art architectures found on the literature.
The core of this dissertation containing the main developments achieved during this PhD work is then presented and discussed. The first key contribution to the state-of-the-art presented here consists in the development of a novel ΣΔ-based all-digital transmitter architecture capable of multiband and multi-standard data transmission in a very flexible and integrated way, where the pulsed RF output operating in the microwave frequency range is generated inside a single FPGA device.
A fundamental contribution regarding the simultaneous transmission of multiple RF signals is then introduced by presenting and describing novel all-digital transmitter architectures that take advantage of multi-gigabit data serializers available on current high-end FPGAs in order to transmit in a time-interleaved approach multiple independent RF carriers. Further improvements in this design approach allowed to provide a two-stage up-conversion transmitter architecture enabling the fine frequency tuning of concurrent multichannel multi-standard signals.
Finally, further improvements regarding two key limitations inherent to current all-digital transmitter approaches are then addressed, namely the poor coding efficiency and the combined high quality factor and tunability requirements of the RF output filter. The followed design approach based on poliphase multipath circuits allowed to create a new FPGA-embedded agile transmitter architecture that significantly improves important figures of merit, such as coding efficiency and SNR, while maintains the high flexibility that is required for supporting multichannel multimode data transmission.
Subsampling receivers with applications to software defined radio systems
Multi-standard RF front-end for avionic systems
Aerodynamic issues such as drag, weight and aeroacoustic noise are important factors in evaluating the impact of a given antenna on an aircraft’s overall performance. These factors are directly related to aircraft fuel consumption, speed and range. This project’s focus is on RF front-end electronics.
The main goal here is to bring aircraft radio equipment as close as possible to the antennas in order to minimize wiring weight and complexity. This calls for a drastic volume reduction of the radio equipment. To this end, the system level requirements for the RF front-ends in terms of frequency bandwidths, data rates, etc, are first investigated in order to identify applications where the proposed volume reductions are the most beneficial and feasible.
Following this, the focus was on an architectural investigation of alternative topologies that can meet the specification. For each topology considered the front-end-level specification need to be translated to circuit/component level requirements. For each case, performance, cost and technical risk analyses are carried out. Then, the design and prototyping of key RF front-end circuits for the selected architecture are undertaken. The multilayered Low Temperature Co-fired Ceramic (LTCC) technology had to be considered as a high risk but more advantageous option in terms of volume/weight reduction. Finally, we aimed at integrating and testing the proposed RF front-end chain, first by characterizing each component individually, and then as a whole front-end subsystem

front-ends for software defined radio and cognitive radio applications. The
emergence of new standards and technologies in the wireless communications
market are raising several issues to the implementation of wideband
transceiver systems. Also, reconfigurable and adaptable systems based on
software defined and cognitive radio models are paving the way for the next
generation of wireless systems. In this doctoral thesis the fundamental idea is
to address the particular open issues and propose appropriate advancements
by exploring and taking profit from new capabilities of digital signal processors
in a way to improve the overall performance of the novel schemes.
Receiver and transmitter strategies for radio communications are summarized
by concentrating on the usability for software defined radio and cognitive radio
systems. Available instrumentation and next steps for analog and digital radio
frequency hardware characterization is also discussed.
Wideband behavioral model formats are proposed for nonlinear description and
characterization of bandpass sampling receivers, as well as, for multi-carrier

on higher-order bandpass sampling approaches is evaluated.
All the proposed designs and modeling strategies are accompanied by
theoretical backgrounds and simulations whenever possible, being then
experimentally validated by laboratory prototypes
Switchable wideband receiver frontend for 5G and satellite applications
Modern day communication architectures provides the requirement for interconnected
devices offering very high data rate (more than 10 Gbps), low latency,
and support for multiple service integration across existing communication generations
with wideband spectrum coverage. An integrated satellite and 5G architecture
switchable receiver frontend is presented in this thesis, consisting of
a single pole double throw (SPDT) switch and two low noise amplifiers (LNAs)
spanning X-band and K/Ka-band frequencies. The independent X-band LNA
(8-12 GHz) has a gain of 38 dB at a centre design frequency of 9.8 GHz, while
the K/Ka-band (23-28 GHz) has a gain of 29 GHz at a centre design frequency
of 25.4 GHz. Both LNAs are a three-stage cascaded design with separated gate
and drain lines for each transistor stage.
The broadband high isolation single pole double throw (SPDT) switch based on
a 0.15 μm gate length Indium Gallium Arsenide (InGaAs) pseudomorphic high
electron transistor (pHEMT) is designed to operate at the frequency range of
DC-50 GHz with less than 3 dB insertion loss and more than 40 dB isolation.
The switch is designed to improve the overall stability of the system and the
gain. A gain of about 25 dB is achieved at 9.8 GHz when the X-band arm is
turned on and the K/Ka-band is turned off. A gain of about 23 dB is achieved
at 25.4 GHz when the K/Ka-band arm is turned on and the X-band arm is
off. This presented switchable receiver frontend is suitable for radar applications,
5G mobile applications, and future broadband receivers in the millimetre wave
frequency range
Arquiteturas paralelas avançadas para transmissores 5G totalmente digitais
The fifth generation of mobile communications (5G) is being prepared and should be rolled out in the early coming years. Massive number of Radio-Frequency (RF) front-ends, peak data rates of 10 Gbps (everywhere and everytime), latencies lower than 10 msec and huge device densities are some of the expected disruptive capabilities. At the same time, previous generations can not be jeopardized, fostering the design of novel flexible and highly integrated radio transceivers able to support the simultaneous transmission of multi-band and multi-standard signals. The concept of all-digital transmission is being pointed out as a promising architecture to cope with such challenging requirements, due to its fully digital radio datapath. This thesis is focused on the proposal and validation of fully integrated and advanced digital transmitter architectures that excel the state-of-the-art in different figures of merit, such as transmission bandwidth, spectral purity, carrier agility, flexibility, and multi-band capability. The first part of this thesis introduces the concept of all-digital RF transmission. In particular, the foundations inherent to this thematic line are given, together with the recent advances reported in the state-of-the-art architectures. The core of this thesis, containing the main developments achieved during the Ph.D. work, is then presented and discussed. The first key contribution to the state-of-the-art is the use of cascaded Delta-Sigma (∆Σ) architectures to relax the analog filtering requirements of the conventional All-Digital Transmitters while maintaining the constant envelope waveform. Then, it is presented the first reported architecture where Antenna Arrays are directly driven by single-chip and single-bit All-Digital Transmitters, with promising results in terms of simplification of the RF front-ends and overall flexibility. Subsequently, the thesis proposes the first reported RF-stage All-Digital Transmitter that can be embedded within a single Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) device. Thereupon, novel techniques to enable the design of wideband All-Digital Transmitters are reported. Finally, the design of concurrent multi-band transmitters is introduced. In particular, the design of agile and flexible dual and triple bands All-DigitalTransmitter (ADT) is demonstrated, which is a very important topic for scenarios that demand carrier aggregation. This Ph.D. contributes withseveral advances to the state-of-the-art of RF all-digital transmitters.
