    Constructive Methods of Invariant Manifolds for Kinetic Problems

    We present the Constructive Methods of Invariant Manifolds for model reduction in physical and chemical kinetics, developed during last two decades. The physical problem of reduced description is studied in a most general form as a problem of constructing the slow invariant manifold. The invariance conditions are formulated as the differential equation for a manifold immersed in the phase space (the invariance equation). The equation of motion for immersed manifolds is obtained (the film extension of the dynamics). Invariant manifolds are fixed points for this equation, and slow invariant manifolds are Lyapunov stable fixed points, thus slowness is presented as stability. A collection of methods for construction of slow invariant manifolds is presented, in particular, the Newton method subject to incomplete linearization is the analogue of KAM methods for dissipative systems. The systematic use of thermodynamics structures and of the quasi--chemical representation allow to construct approximations which are in concordance with physical restrictions. We systematically consider a discrete analogue of the slow (stable) positively invariant manifolds for dissipative systems, invariant grids. Dynamic and static postprocessing procedures give us the opportunity to estimate the accuracy of obtained approximations, and to improve this accuracy significantly. The following examples of applications are presented: Nonperturbative deviation of physically consistent hydrodynamics from the Boltzmann equation and from the reversible dynamics, for Knudsen numbers Kn~1; construction of the moment equations for nonequilibrium media and their dynamical correction (instead of extension of list of variables) to gain more accuracy in description of highly nonequilibrium flows; determination of molecules dimension (as diameters of equivalent hard spheres) from experimental viscosity data; invariant grids for a two-dimensional catalytic reaction and a four-dimensional oxidation reaction (six species, two balances); universal continuous media description of dilute polymeric solution; the limits of macroscopic description for polymer molecules, etc

    A new approach called Flow Curvature Method has been recently developed in a book entitled Differential Geometry Applied to Dynamical Systems. It consists in considering the trajectory curve, integral of any n-dimensional dynamical system as a curve in Euclidean n-space that enables to analytically compute the curvature of the trajectory - or the flow. Hence, it has been stated on the one hand that the location of the points where the curvature of the flow vanishes defines a manifold called flow curvature manifold and on the other hand that such a manifold associated with any n-dimensional dynamical system directly provides its slow manifold analytical equation the invariance of which has been proved according to Darboux theory. The Flow Curvature Method has been already applied to many types of autonomous dynamical systems either singularly perturbed such as Van der Pol Model, FitzHugh-Nagumo Model, Chua's Model, ...) or non-singularly perturbed such as Pikovskii-Rabinovich-Trakhtengerts Model, Rikitake Model, Lorenz Model,... More- over, it has been also applied to non-autonomous dynamical systems such as the Forced Van der Pol Model. In this article it will be used for the first time to analytically compute the slow invariant manifold analytical equation of the four-dimensional Unforced and Forced Heartbeat Model. Its slow invariant manifold equation which can be considered as a "state equation" linking all variables could then be used in heart prediction and control according to the strong correspondence between the model and the physiological cardiovascular system behavior.Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1408.171

    Slow invariant manifolds as curvature of the flow of dynamical systems

    Considering trajectory curves, integral of n-dimensional dynamical systems, within the framework of Differential Geometry as curves in Euclidean n-space, it will be established in this article that the curvature of the flow, i.e. the curvature of the trajectory curves of any n-dimensional dynamical system directly provides its slow manifold analytical equation the invariance of which will be then proved according to Darboux theory. Thus, it will be stated that the flow curvature method, which uses neither eigenvectors nor asymptotic expansions but only involves time derivatives of the velocity vector field, constitutes a general method simplifying and improving the slow invariant manifold analytical equation determination of high-dimensional dynamical systems. Moreover, it will be shown that this method generalizes the Tangent Linear System Approximation and encompasses the so-called Geometric Singular Perturbation Theory. Then, slow invariant manifolds analytical equation of paradigmatic Chua's piecewise linear and cubic models of dimensions three, four and five will be provided as tutorial examples exemplifying this method as well as those of high-dimensional dynamical systems

    The global behaviour of nonlinear systems is extremely important in control and systems theory since the usual local theories will only give information about a system in some neighbourhood of an operating point. Away from that point, the system may have totally different behaviour and so the theory developed for the local system will be useless for the global one. In this paper we shall consider the analytical and topological structure of systems on 2- and 3- manifolds and show that it is possible to obtain systems with 'arbitrarily strange' behaviour, i.e., arbitrary numbers of chaotic regimes which are knotted and linked in arbitrary ways. We shall do this by considering Heegaard Splittings of these manifolds and the resulting systems defined on the boundaries.Comment: 15 pages with 9 pictures. Accepted by Int.     Transport in Transitory Dynamical Systems

    We introduce the concept of a "transitory" dynamical system---one whose time-dependence is confined to a compact interval---and show how to quantify transport between two-dimensional Lagrangian coherent structures for the Hamiltonian case. This requires knowing only the "action" of relevant heteroclinic orbits at the intersection of invariant manifolds of "forward" and "backward" hyperbolic orbits. These manifolds can be easily computed by leveraging the autonomous nature of the vector fields on either side of the time-dependent transition. As illustrative examples we consider a two-dimensional fluid flow in a rotating double-gyre configuration and a simple one-and-a-half degree of freedom model of a resonant particle accelerator. We compare our results to those obtained using finite-time Lyapunov exponents and to adiabatic theory, discussing the benefits and limitations of each method.Comment: Updated and corrected version.     Invariant Manifolds, the Spatial Three-Body Problem and Space Mission Design

    The invariant manifold structures of the collinear libration points for the spatial restricted three-body problem provide the framework for understanding complex dynamical phenomena from a geometric point of view. In particular, the stable and unstable invariant manifold \tubes" associated to libration point orbits are the phase space structures that provide a conduit for orbits between primary bodies for separate three-body systems. These invariant manifold tubes can be used to construct new spacecraft trajectories, such as a \Petit Grand Tour" of the moons of Jupiter. Previous work focused on the planar circular restricted three-body problem. The current work extends the results to the spatial case
