Remotely piloted aircraft systems and a wireless sensors network for radiological accidents
In critical radiological situations, the real time information that we could get from the disaster area becomes of great importance. However, communication systems could be affected after a radiological accident. The proposed network in this research consists of distributed sensors in charge of collecting radiological data and ground vehicles that are sent to the nuclear plant at the moment of the accident to sense environmental and radiological information. Afterwards, data would be analyzed in the control center. Collected data by sensors and ground vehicles would be delivered to a control center using Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) as a message carrier. We analyze the pairwise contacts, as well as visiting times, data collection, capacity of the links, size of the transmission window of the sensors, and so forth. Performance Analysis of Micro Unmanned Airborne Communication Relays for Cellular Networks
This paper analyses the potential of utilising small unmanned-aerial-vehicles
(SUAV) as wireless relays for assisting cellular network performance. Whilst
high altitude wireless relays have been investigated over the past 2 decades,
the new class of low cost SUAVs offers new possibilities for addressing local
traffic imbalances and providing emergency coverage.We present field-test
results from an SUAV test-bed in both urban and rural environments. The results
show that trough-to-peak throughput improvements can be achieved for users in
poor coverage zones. Furthermore, the paper reinforces the experimental study
with large-scale network analysis using both stochastic geometry and multi-cell

An Empirical Air-to-Ground Channel Model Based on Passive Measurements in LTE
In this paper, a recently conducted measurement campaign for
unmanned-aerial-vehicle (UAV) channels is introduced. The downlink signals of
an in-service long-time-evolution (LTE) network which is deployed in a suburban
scenario were acquired. Five horizontal and five vertical flight routes were
considered. The channel impulse responses (CIRs) are extracted from the
received data by exploiting the cell specific signals (CRSs). Based on the
CIRs, the parameters of multipath components (MPCs) are estimated by using a
high-resolution algorithm derived according to the space-alternating
generalized expectation-maximization (SAGE) principle. Based on the SAGE
results, channel characteristics including the path loss, shadow fading, fast
fading, delay spread and Doppler frequency spread are thoroughly investigated
for different heights and horizontal distances, which constitute a stochastic

Polar communications: Status and recommendations. Report of the Science Working Group
The capabilities of the existing communication links within the polar regions, as well as between the polar regions and the continental United States, are summarized. These capabilities are placed in the context of the principal scientific disciplines that are active in polar research, and in the context of how scientists both utilize and are limited by present technologies. Based on an assessment of the scientific objectives potentially achievable with improved communication capabilities, a list of requirements on and recommendations for communication capabilities necessary to support polar science over the next ten years is given
Aerial Networking for the Implementation of Cooperative Control on Small Unmanned Aerial Systems
The employment of Small Unmanned Aerial Systems (SUAS) for reconnaissance and surveillance missions is a vital capability of the United States military. Cooperative control algorithms for SUAS can enable tactical multi-vehicle configurations for communications extension, intelligent navigation, and a multitude of other applications. Past research at AFIT has designed and simulated a cooperative rover-relay algorithm for extended communications and has investigated its implementation through various modem configurations. This research explores aerial networking options for implementing cooperative control and applies them to an actual SUAS. Using Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) hardware, a system was designed and flight tested to implement the rover-relay algorithm and provide a testbed system for future research in cooperative control. Two different modem configurations were designed and tested. The first modem configuration was demonstrated through a series of ground and flight tests to successfully relay autopilot commands and telemetry between a ground station and a rover aircraft through a relay aircraft. This configuration effectively doubles the effective range of the rover system to 1.2 miles, together with an algorithm that autonomously navigates the relay aircraft to an optimal location. Secondly, a mesh network was configured and tested. This configuration successfully relayed aircraft telemetry to the ground station from each vehicle in the network. However, the network suffered from low throughput, which limited autopilot functionality, such as updating navigation waypoints to each aircraft. The results suggest the system be updated with more capable modems in a mesh configuration to broaden the possibilities for future research in cooperative applications
U.S. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVS) and Network Centric Warfare (NCW) impacts on combat aviation tactics from Gulf War I through 2007 Iraq
Unmanned, aerial vehicles (UAVs) are an increasingly important element of many modern militaries. Their success on battlefields in Afghanistan, Iraq, and around the globe has driven demand for a variety of types of unmanned vehicles. Their proven value consists in low risk and low cost, and their capabilities include persistent surveillance, tactical and combat reconnaissance, resilience, and dynamic re-tasking. This research evaluates past, current, and possible future operating environments for several UAV platforms to survey the changing dynamics of combat-aviation tactics and make recommendations regarding UAV employment scenarios to the Turkish military. While UAVs have already established their importance in military operations, ongoing evaluations of UAV operating environments, capabilities, technologies, concepts, and organizational issues inform the development of future systems. To what extent will UAV capabilities increasingly define tomorrow's missions, requirements, and results in surveillance and combat tactics? Integrating UAVs and concepts of operations (CONOPS) on future battlefields is an emergent science. Managing a transition from manned- to unmanned and remotely piloted aviation platforms involves new technological complexity and new aviation personnel roles, especially for combat pilots.
