Principles of Physical Layer Security in Multiuser Wireless Networks: A Survey
This paper provides a comprehensive review of the domain of physical layer
security in multiuser wireless networks. The essential premise of
physical-layer security is to enable the exchange of confidential messages over
a wireless medium in the presence of unauthorized eavesdroppers without relying
on higher-layer encryption. This can be achieved primarily in two ways: without
the need for a secret key by intelligently designing transmit coding
strategies, or by exploiting the wireless communication medium to develop
secret keys over public channels. The survey begins with an overview of the
foundations dating back to the pioneering work of Shannon and Wyner on
information-theoretic security. We then describe the evolution of secure
transmission strategies from point-to-point channels to multiple-antenna
systems, followed by generalizations to multiuser broadcast, multiple-access,
interference, and relay networks. Secret-key generation and establishment
protocols based on physical layer mechanisms are subsequently covered.
Approaches for secrecy based on channel coding design are then examined, along
with a description of inter-disciplinary approaches based on game theory and
stochastic geometry. The associated problem of physical-layer message
authentication is also introduced briefly. The survey concludes with
observations on potential research directions in this area.Comment: 23 pages, 10 figures, 303 refs. arXiv admin note: text overlap with

Hardware Impairments Aware Transceiver Design for Full-Duplex Amplify-and-Forward MIMO Relaying
In this work we study the behavior of a full-duplex (FD) and
amplify-and-forward (AF) relay with multiple antennas, where hardware
impairments of the FD relay transceiver is taken into account. Due to the
inter-dependency of the transmit relay power on each antenna and the residual
self-interference in an FD-AF relay, we observe a distortion loop that degrades
the system performance when the relay dynamic range is not high. In this
regard, we analyze the relay function in presence of the hardware inaccuracies
and an optimization problem is formulated to maximize the signal to
distortion-plus-noise ratio (SDNR), under relay and source transmit power
constraints. Due to the problem complexity, we propose a
gradient-projection-based (GP) algorithm to obtain an optimal solution.
Moreover, a nonalternating sub-optimal solution is proposed by assuming a
rank-1 relay amplification matrix, and separating the design of the relay
process into multiple stages (MuStR1). The proposed MuStR1 method is then
enhanced by introducing an alternating update over the optimization variables,
denoted as AltMuStR1 algorithm. It is observed that compared to GP, (Alt)MuStR1
algorithms significantly reduce the required computational complexity at the
expense of a slight performance degradation. Finally, the proposed methods are
evaluated under various system conditions, and compared with the methods
available in the current literature. In particular, it is observed that as the
hardware impairments increase, or for a system with a high transmit power, the
impact of applying a distortion-aware design is significant.Comment: Submitted to IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communication
On Design of Collaborative Beamforming for Two-Way Relay Networks
We consider a two-way relay network, where two source nodes, S1 and S2,
exchange information through a cluster of relay nodes. The relay nodes receive
the sum signal from S1 and S2 in the first time slot. In the second time slot,
each relay node multiplies its received signal by a complex coefficient and
retransmits the signal to the two source nodes, which leads to a collaborative
two-way beamforming system. By applying the principle of analog network coding,
each receiver at S1 and S2 cancels the "self-interference" in the received
signal from the relay cluster and decodes the message. This paper studies the
2-dimensional achievable rate region for such a two-way relay network with
collaborative beamforming. With different assumptions of channel reciprocity
between the source-relay and relay-source channels, the achievable rate region
is characterized under two setups. First, with reciprocal channels, we
investigate the achievable rate regions when the relay cluster is subject to a
sum-power constraint or individual-power constraints. We show that the optimal
beamforming vectors obtained from solving the weighted sum inverse-SNR
minimization (WSISMin) problems are sufficient to characterize the
corresponding achievable rate region. Furthermore, we derive the closed form
solutions for those optimal beamforming vectors and consequently propose the
partially distributed algorithms to implement the optimal beamforming, where
each relay node only needs the local channel information and one global
parameter. Second, with the non-reciprocal channels, the achievable rate
regions are also characterized for both the sum-power constraint case and the
individual-power constraint case. Although no closed-form solutions are
available under this setup, we present efficient numerical algorithms.Comment: new version of the previously posted, single column double spacing,

Joint Source and Relay Precoding Designs for MIMO Two-Way Relaying Based on MSE Criterion
Properly designed precoders can significantly improve the spectral efficiency
of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay systems. In this paper, we
investigate joint source and relay precoding design based on the
mean-square-error (MSE) criterion in MIMO two-way relay systems, where two
multi-antenna source nodes exchange information via a multi-antenna
amplify-and-forward relay node. This problem is non-convex and its optimal
solution remains unsolved. Aiming to find an efficient way to solve the
problem, we first decouple the primal problem into three tractable
sub-problems, and then propose an iterative precoding design algorithm based on
alternating optimization. The solution to each sub-problem is optimal and
unique, thus the convergence of the iterative algorithm is guaranteed.
Secondly, we propose a structured precoding design to lower the computational
complexity. The proposed precoding structure is able to parallelize the
channels in the multiple access (MAC) phase and broadcast (BC) phase. It thus
reduces the precoding design to a simple power allocation problem. Lastly, for
the special case where only a single data stream is transmitted from each
source node, we present a source-antenna-selection (SAS) based precoding design
algorithm. This algorithm selects only one antenna for transmission from each
source and thus requires lower signalling overhead. Comprehensive simulation is
conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of all the proposed precoding designs.Comment: 32 pages, 10 figure
Secure Beamforming for MIMO Two-Way Communications with an Untrusted Relay
This paper studies the secure beamforming design in a multiple-antenna
three-node system where two source nodes exchange messages with the help of an
untrusted relay node. The relay acts as both an essential signal forwarder and
a potential eavesdropper. Both two-phase and three-phase two-way relay
strategies are considered. Our goal is to jointly optimize the source and relay
beamformers for maximizing the secrecy sum rate of the two-way communications.
We first derive the optimal relay beamformer structures. Then, iterative
algorithms are proposed to find source and relay beamformers jointly based on
alternating optimization. Furthermore, we conduct asymptotic analysis on the
maximum secrecy sum-rate. Our analysis shows that when all transmit powers
approach infinity, the two-phase two-way relay scheme achieves the maximum
secrecy sum rate if the source beamformers are designed such that the received
signals at the relay align in the same direction. This reveals an important
advantage of signal alignment technique in against eavesdropping. It is also
shown that if the source powers approach zero the three-phase scheme performs
the best while the two-phase scheme is even worse than direct transmission.
Simulation results have verified the efficiency of the secure beamforming
algorithms as well as the analytical findings.Comment: 10 figures, Submitted to IEEE Transactions on Signal Processin
Sum-Rate Maximization in Two-Way AF MIMO Relaying: Polynomial Time Solutions to a Class of DC Programming Problems
Sum-rate maximization in two-way amplify-and-forward (AF) multiple-input
multiple-output (MIMO) relaying belongs to the class of difference-of-convex
functions (DC) programming problems. DC programming problems occur as well in
other signal processing applications and are typically solved using different
modifications of the branch-and-bound method. This method, however, does not
have any polynomial time complexity guarantees. In this paper, we show that a
class of DC programming problems, to which the sum-rate maximization in two-way
MIMO relaying belongs, can be solved very efficiently in polynomial time, and
develop two algorithms. The objective function of the problem is represented as
a product of quadratic ratios and parameterized so that its convex part (versus
the concave part) contains only one (or two) optimization variables. One of the
algorithms is called POlynomial-Time DC (POTDC) and is based on semi-definite
programming (SDP) relaxation, linearization, and an iterative search over a
single parameter. The other algorithm is called RAte-maximization via
Generalized EigenvectorS (RAGES) and is based on the generalized eigenvectors
method and an iterative search over two (or one, in its approximate version)
optimization variables. We also derive an upper-bound for the optimal values of
the corresponding optimization problem and show by simulations that this
upper-bound can be achieved by both algorithms. The proposed methods for
maximizing the sum-rate in the two-way AF MIMO relaying system are shown to be
superior to other state-of-the-art algorithms.Comment: 35 pages, 10 figures, Submitted to the IEEE Trans. Signal Processing

Rate Balancing in Full-Duplex MIMO Two-Way Relay Networks
Maximizing the minimum rate for a full-duplex multiple-input multiple-output
(MIMO) wireless network encompassing two sources and a two-way (TW) relay
operating in a two hop manner is investigated. To improve the overall
performance, using a zero-forcing approach at the relay to suppress the
residual self-interference arising from full-duplex (FD) operation, the
underlying max-min problem is cast as an optimization problem which is
non-convex. To circumvent this issue, semidefinite relaxation technique is
employed, leading to upper and lower bound solutions for the optimization
problem. Numerical results verify that the upper and lower bound solutions
closely follow each other, showing that the proposed approach results in a
close-to-optimal solution. In addition, the impact of residual
self-interference upon the overall performance of the network in terms of the
minimum rate is illustrated by numerical results, and for low residual
self-interference scenarios the superiority of the proposed method compared to
an analogous half-duplex (HD) counterpart is shown
