This thesis presents a detailed investigative process into the study of the control of an islanded microgrid. This investigation is done through the research and exploration of multiple existing control techniques for the control of a microgrid and then by analysing them to identify the areas where the existing methods can be altered in order to reduce or mitigate common operational issues. The final goal was to use the gathered information to develop an innovative strategy that may be used to control an islanded microgrid. However, due to various challenges faced over the course of the project – this goal was not achieved. In light of this, the aim of this thesis was for it to became a research focused development of a body of work that may be useful or potentially serve as a point of reference for future studies in the control of an islanded microgrid. 1. P & PI Controller Regulation & Response Times 2. Natural Load Sharing Amongst Distributed Generators 3. Secondary Frequency-Load Control Mechanisms 4. Controllable Storage Systems 5. Automated Load Shedding in Microgrids 6. Stabilizer Control Strategies By developing this list of factors and considerations, this thesis project aims to be a useful resource for future studies performed in the topic of islanded microgrid control. The aspiration is that by collating extensive background, theoretical and technical research in this project, the efficiency of those who may want to continue work in this area of study will be improved

Using Renewable-Based Microgrid Capabilities for Power System Restoration

Power system restoration (PSR) is a very important procedure to ensure the consumer supply. In this paper, a decentralized multi-agent system (MAS) for dealing with the microgrid restoration procedure is proposed. In this proposed method, each agent is associated to a consumer or microsource (MS) and these will communicate between each other in order to reach a common decision. The agents solve a 0/1 knapsack problem to determine the best load connection sequence during the microgrid restoration procedure. The proposed MAS is tested in two different case studies: a total blackout and a partial blackout, in which the emergency demand response programs are considered. It is developed in the Matlab/Simulink environment and is validated by performing the corresponding dynamic simulations.Power system restoration (PSR) is a very important procedure to ensure the consumer supply. Microgrid, Its Control and Stability: The State of The Art

Some of the challenges facing the power industries globally include power quality and stability, diminishing fossil fuel, climate change amongst others. The use of distributed generators however is growing at a steady pace to address these challenges. When interconnected and integrated with storage devices and controllable load, these generators operate together in a grid, which has incidental stability and control issues. The focus of this paper, therefore, is on the review and discussion of the different control approaches and the hierarchical control on a microgrid, the current practice in the literature concerning stability and the control techniques deployed for microgrid control; the weakness and strength of the different control strategies were discussed in this work and some of the areas that require further research are highlighted
