    Advanced driver assistance systems that actively assist the driver based on environment perception achieved significant advances in recent years. Along with this development, autonomous driving became a major research topic that aims ultimately at development of fully automated, driverless vehicles. Since such applications rely on environment perception, their ever increasing sophistication imposes growing demands on environmental sensors. Specifically, the need for reliable environment sensing necessitates the development of more sophisticated, high-performance radar sensors. A further vital challenge in terms of increased radar interference arises with the growing market penetration of the vehicular radar technology. To address these challenges, in many respects novel approaches and radar concepts are required. As the modulation is one of the key factors determining the radar performance, the research of new modulation schemes for automotive radar becomes essential. A topic that emerged in the last years is the radar operating with digitally generated waveforms based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). Initially, the use of OFDM for radar was motivated by the combination of radar with communication via modulation of the radar waveform with communication data. Some subsequent works studied the use of OFDM as a modulation scheme in many different radar applications - from adaptive radar processing to synthetic aperture radar. This suggests that the flexibility provided by OFDM based digital generation of radar waveforms can potentially enable novel radar concepts that are well suited for future automotive radar systems. This thesis aims to explore the perspectives of OFDM as a modulation scheme for high-performance, robust and adaptive automotive radar. To this end, novel signal processing algorithms and OFDM based radar concepts are introduced in this work. The main focus of the thesis is on high-end automotive radar applications, while the applicability for real time implementation is of primary concern. The first part of this thesis focuses on signal processing algorithms for distance-velocity estimation. As a foundation for the algorithms presented in this thesis, a novel and rigorous signal model for OFDM radar is introduced. Based on this signal model, the limitations of the state-of-the-art OFDM radar signal processing are pointed out. To overcome these limitations, we propose two novel signal processing algorithms that build upon the conventional processing and extend it by more sophisticated modeling of the radar signal. The first method named all-cell Doppler compensation (ACDC) overcomes the Doppler sensitivity problem of OFDM radar. The core idea of this algorithm is the scenario-independent correction of Doppler shifts for the entire measurement signal. Since Doppler effect is a major concern for OFDM radar and influences the radar parametrization, its complete compensation opens new perspectives for OFDM radar. It not only achieves an improved, Doppler-independent performance, it also enables more favorable system parametrization. The second distance-velocity estimation algorithm introduced in this thesis addresses the issue of range and Doppler frequency migration due to the target’s motion during the measurement. For the conventional radar signal processing, these migration effects set an upper limit on the simultaneously achievable distance and velocity resolution. The proposed method named all-cell migration compensation (ACMC) extends the underlying OFDM radar signal model to account for the target motion. As a result, the effect of migration is compensated implicitly for the entire radar measurement, which leads to an improved distance and velocity resolution. Simulations show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms in overcoming the two major limitations of the conventional OFDM radar signal processing. As multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar is a well-established technology for improving the direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation, the second part of this work studies the multiplexing methods for OFDM radar that enable simultaneous use of multiple transmit antennas for MIMO radar processing. After discussing the drawbacks of known multiplexing methods, we introduce two advanced multiplexing schemes for OFDM-MIMO radar based on non-equidistant interleaving of OFDM subcarriers. These multiplexing approaches exploit the multicarrier structure of OFDM for generation of orthogonal waveforms that enable a simultaneous operation of multiple MIMO channels occupying the same bandwidth. The primary advantage of these methods is that despite multiplexing they maintain all original radar parameters (resolution and unambiguous range in distance and velocity) for each individual MIMO channel. To obtain favorable interleaving patterns with low sidelobes, we propose an optimization approach based on genetic algorithms. Furthermore, to overcome the drawback of increased sidelobes due to subcarrier interleaving, we study the applicability of sparse processing methods for the distance-velocity estimation from measurements of non-equidistantly interleaved OFDM-MIMO radar. We introduce a novel sparsity based frequency estimation algorithm designed for this purpose. The third topic addressed in this work is the robustness of OFDM radar to interference from other radar sensors. In this part of the work we study the interference robustness of OFDM radar and propose novel interference mitigation techniques. The first interference suppression algorithm we introduce exploits the robustness of OFDM to narrowband interference by dropping subcarriers strongly corrupted by interference from evaluation. To avoid increase of sidelobes due to missing subcarriers, their values are reconstructed from the neighboring ones based on linear prediction methods. As a further measure for increasing the interference robustness in a more universal manner, we propose the extension of OFDM radar with cognitive features. We introduce the general concept of cognitive radar that is capable of adapting to the current spectral situation for avoiding interference. Our work focuses mainly on waveform adaptation techniques; we propose adaptation methods that allow dynamic interference avoidance without affecting adversely the estimation performance. The final part of this work focuses on prototypical implementation of OFDM-MIMO radar. With the constructed prototype, the feasibility of OFDM for high-performance radar applications is demonstrated. Furthermore, based on this radar prototype the algorithms presented in this thesis are validated experimentally. The measurements confirm the applicability of the proposed algorithms and concepts for real world automotive radar implementations

    Lamb: a simulation tool for air-coupled lamb wave based ultrasonic NDE systems

    La técnica de las ondas de Lamb acopladas por aire representa un importante avance en el área de los Ensayos No Destructivos (END) de materiales laminares.Sin embargo la compleja naturaleza de las vibraciones mecánicas encontradas en acústica, hacen que el análisis y el estudio de esta área del conocimiento sea un tema muy complejo. De allí que la posibilidad de contar con una herramienta de simulación de software que permita la evaluación y prueba de diferentes configuraciones de excitación y recepción acústica utilizando la flexibilidad de un modelo de computadora sea de una gran utilidad y ayuda.El objetivo de la presente tesis es proveer al área de los END con un software de simulación gratuito: The LAMB Matlab® toolbox basado en el modelo del software libre de la GNU.El software es capaz de simular el comportamiento de sistemas de END basados en ondas de Lamb acopladas por aire en láminas isótropas simples utilizando transductores tipo array.El programa se basa en un arreglo tipo C-scan de un sistema de END y está compuesto por tres bloques principales: 1) Excitación, 2) Propagación y 3) Recepción.La verificación individual del funcionamiento de dichos módulos se presenta a lo largo de la tesis mediante una serie de comparaciones entre simulaciones y datos experimentales provenientes de diferentes pruebas. Por otro lado, la validación del programa completo se llevo a cabo por medio de experimentos en láminas de cobre y aluminio; utilizando un sistema real de END por ondas de Lamb acopladas en aire mediante arrays cóncavos.La influencia negativa en el desempeño general de dicho sistema de END real basado en este tipo de transductores se comprobó efectivamente mediante el simulador desarrollado. Esto se debió fundamentalmente al efecto de directividad de los sensores individuales en los transductores y a la simetría cóncava de los arrays.Para emular este comportamiento la tesis presenta un modelo geométrico bidimensional simple de un filtro espacial, junto a las simulaciones de un nuevo tipo de array plano propuesto.El programa desarrollado comprobó así mismo la naturaleza coherente de los campos acústicos emitidos en aire por las láminas sujetas a vibraciones de Lamb. Esto se realizó mediante la implementación de un conformador de haz simple de suma y demora; constituyéndose así la etapa inicial de procesamiento de señal del bloque de recepción del programa.El objetivo principal del presente trabajo fue contribuir con un modelo operativo de simulación y prueba de nuevos diseños de arrays e implementación de estrategias de procesado de señal útiles en sistemas de END basados en ondas de Lamb acopladas por aire.Finalmente, si bien el objetivo de la calibración del programa no se pudo conseguir; si se logró efectivamente un notable grado de similitud con un sistema de END real.Air-coupled ultrasonic Lamb waves represent an important advance in Non- Destructive Testing and Evaluation (NDT & NDE) techniques of plate materials and structures. Examples of these advances are the characterization and quality assessment of laminate materials in manufacturing processes, the location of damaged parts in aircrafts and structure monitoring in the aerospace industry.However the rich and complex nature of mechanical vibrations encountered in acoustics make the subject of analysis and study of these systems a very complex task. Therefore a simulation tool that permits the evaluation and testing of different configuration scenarios using the flexibility of a computer model is an invaluable aid and advantage.The objective of this thesis is to provide the field of NDT with free open source software i.e. the LAMB Matlabrtoolbox. The toolbox is capable of simulating the behaviour of Lamb wave based NDE systems for single ideal isotropic laminates using air-coupled ultrasonic arrays. The programme usesa pitch-catch type of a Cscan NDE arrangement and is composed of three integrated sections each individually modelling a feature in the system: 1) Excitation, 2) Propagation, and 3) Reception.For assessment of the individual modules of the toolbox the thesis presents comparisons between each section simulations and the data obtained from different acoustic experiments. The validation of the complete simulator was carried out by evaluation tests on the copper and aluminium plates by use of a real hardware prototype of a Lamb wave based NDE system with aircoupled concave arrays.The negative impact on the performance of the real air-coupled NDE systembased on concave arrays was effectively confirmed by the programme. This was produced by the inherent directivity of the individual sensors as well as their concave arrangement. To emulate this behaviour the thesis introduces a simple two-dimensional geometric model for the inclusion of the spatial filtering effect of the sensors plus a group of simulations for a new proposed air-coupled plane array transducer.The software also verified the spatial coherent nature of the Lamb wave fields emitted by a plate in air. This was demonstrated by the implementation of a delay and sum beamformer to constitute an initial signal processing stage in the reception section

    Algorithms and Circuits for Analog-Digital Hybrid Multibeam Arrays

    Fifth generation (5G) and beyond wireless communication systems will rely heavily on larger antenna arrays combined with beamforming to mitigate the high free-space path-loss that prevails in millimeter-wave (mmW) and above frequencies. Sharp beams that can support wide bandwidths are desired both at the transmitter and the receiver to leverage the glut of bandwidth available at these frequency bands. Further, multiple simultaneous sharp beams are imperative for such systems to exploit mmW/sub-THz wireless channels using multiple reflected paths simultaneously. Therefore, multibeam antenna arrays that can support wider bandwidths are a key enabler for 5G and beyond systems. In general, N-beam systems using N-element antenna arrays will involve circuit complexities of the order of N2. This dissertation investigates new analog, digital and hybrid low complexity multibeam beamforming algorithms and circuits for reducing the associated high size, weight, and power (SWaP) complexities in larger multibeam arrays. The research efforts on the digital beamforming aspect propose the use of a new class of discrete Fourier transform (DFT) approximations for multibeam generation to eliminate the need for digital multipliers in the beamforming circuitry. For this, 8-, 16- and 32-beam multiplierless multibeam algorithms have been proposed for uniform linear array applications. A 2.4 GHz 16-element array receiver setup and a 5.8 GHz 32-element array receiver system which use field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) as digital backend have been built for real-time experimental verification of the digital multiplierless algorithms. The multiplierless algorithms have been experimentally verified by digitally measuring beams. It has been shown that the measured beams from the multiplierless algorithms are in good agreement with the exact counterpart algorithms. Analog realizations of the proposed approximate DFT transforms have also been investigated leading to low-complex, high bandwidth circuits in CMOS. Further, a novel approach for reducing the circuit complexity of analog true-time delay (TTD) N-beam beamforming networks using N-element arrays has been proposed for wideband squint-free operation. A sparse factorization of the N-beam delay Vandermonde beamforming matrix is used to reduce the total amount of TTD elements that are needed for obtaining N number of beams in a wideband array. The method has been verified using measured responses of CMOS all-pass filters (APFs). The wideband squint-free multibeam algorithm is also used to propose a new low-complexity hybrid beamforming architecture targeting future 5G mmW systems. Apart from that, the dissertation also explores multibeam beamforming architectures for uniform circular arrays (UCAs). An algorithm having N log N circuit complexity for simultaneous generation of N-beams in an N-element UCA is explored and verified
