Route Planning in Transportation Networks
We survey recent advances in algorithms for route planning in transportation
networks. For road networks, we show that one can compute driving directions in
milliseconds or less even at continental scale. A variety of techniques provide
different trade-offs between preprocessing effort, space requirements, and
query time. Some algorithms can answer queries in a fraction of a microsecond,
while others can deal efficiently with real-time traffic. Journey planning on
public transportation systems, although conceptually similar, is a
significantly harder problem due to its inherent time-dependent and
multicriteria nature. Although exact algorithms are fast enough for interactive
queries on metropolitan transit systems, dealing with continent-sized instances
requires simplifications or heavy preprocessing. The multimodal route planning
problem, which seeks journeys combining schedule-based transportation (buses,
trains) with unrestricted modes (walking, driving), is even harder, relying on

Fast Shortest Path Distance Estimation in Large Networks
We study the problem of preprocessing a large graph so that point-to-point shortest-path queries can be answered very fast. Computing shortest paths is a well studied problem, but exact algorithms do not scale to huge graphs encountered on the web, social networks, and other applications.
In this paper we focus on approximate methods for distance estimation, in particular using landmark-based distance indexing. This approach involves selecting a subset of nodes as landmarks and computing (offline) the distances from each node in the graph to those landmarks. At runtime, when the distance between a pair of nodes is needed, we can estimate it quickly by combining the precomputed distances of the two nodes to the landmarks.
We prove that selecting the optimal set of landmarks is an NP-hard problem, and thus heuristic solutions need to be employed. Given a budget of memory for the index, which translates directly into a budget of landmarks, different landmark selection strategies can yield dramatically different results in terms of accuracy. A number of simple methods that scale well to large graphs are therefore developed and experimentally compared. The simplest methods choose central nodes of the graph, while the more elaborate ones select central nodes that are also far away from one another. The efficiency of the suggested techniques is tested experimentally using five different real world graphs with millions of edges; for a given accuracy, they require as much as 250 times less space than the current approach in the literature which considers selecting landmarks at random.

The minimum energy expenditure shortest path method
This article discusses the addition of an energy parameter to the shortest path execution process; namely, the energy expenditure by a character during execution of the path. Given a simple environment in which a character has the ability to perform actions related to locomotion, such as walking and stair stepping, current techniques execute the shortest path based on the length of the extracted root trajectory. However, actual humans acting in constrained environments do not plan only according to shortest path criterion, they conceptually measure the path that minimizes the amount of energy expenditure. On this basis, it seems that virtual characters should also execute their paths according to the minimization of actual energy expenditure as well. In this article, a simple method that uses a formula for computing vanadium dioxide () levels, which is a proxy for the energy expenditure by humans during various activities, is presented. The presented solution could be beneficial in any situation requiring a sophisticated perspective of the path-execution process. Moreover, it can be implemented in almost every path-planning method that has the ability to measure stepping actions or other actions of a virtual character
Shortest Distances as Enumeration Problem
We investigate the single source shortest distance (SSSD) and all pairs
shortest distance (APSD) problems as enumeration problems (on unweighted and
integer weighted graphs), meaning that the elements -- where
and are vertices with shortest distance -- are produced and
listed one by one without repetition. The performance is measured in the RAM
model of computation with respect to preprocessing time and delay, i.e., the
maximum time that elapses between two consecutive outputs. This point of view
reveals that specific types of output (e.g., excluding the non-reachable pairs
, or excluding the self-distances ) and the order of
enumeration (e.g., sorted by distance, sorted row-wise with respect to the
distance matrix) have a huge impact on the complexity of APSD while they appear
to have no effect on SSSD.
In particular, we show for APSD that enumeration without output restrictions
is possible with delay in the order of the average degree. Excluding
non-reachable pairs, or requesting the output to be sorted by distance,
increases this delay to the order of the maximum degree. Further, for weighted
graphs, a delay in the order of the average degree is also not possible without
preprocessing or considering self-distances as output. In contrast, for SSSD we
find that a delay in the order of the maximum degree without preprocessing is
attainable and unavoidable for any of these requirements.Comment: Updated version adds the study of space complexit
