    Steady viscous flow past a circular cylinder

    Viscous flow past a circular cylinder becomes unstable around Reynolds number Re = 40. With a numerical technique based on Newton's method and made possible by the use of a supercomputer, steady (but unstable) solutions have been calculated up to Re = 400. It is found that the wake continues to grow in length approximately linearly with Re. However, in conflict with available asymptotic predictions, the width starts to increase very rapidly around Re = 300. All numerical calculations have been performed on the CDC CYBER 205 at the CDC Service Center in Arden Hills, Minnesota

    The author advocates for the mediating role of philosophy in the dialogues between science and theology, in particular, the dialogues to clarify that the creation of biblical faith is the same entity as the cosmos of scientific study. He points out that most current scientific concepts, such as \'field,\' have a prior history of usage in philosophical discourse, before being modified for usage in scientific contexts. This example, together with associated concepts, holds special promise for developing a contemporary theology of divine presence and action

    Comparison of CrAlN layers obtained with one (CrAl) or two targets (Cr and Al) by magnetron sputtering

    The authors would like to thank the Regional Council of Burgundy, France for its funding and Michael Walock for his help in English revisionsThe aim of this study is to compare the properties of CrAlN coatings obtained by magnetron sputtering with one (CrAl) or two targets (Cr and Al). The influence of parameters such as the target bias voltage, the working pressure, the deposition time and the bias voltage applied on the Cr or Al targets on the properties of the layers was studied. We characterized the films by X-ray Diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy, coupled with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy, nanoindentation and their residual stresses were also determined. The optimal films obtained with both methods are well crystallized, well-adherent to the substrate, and contained similar amounts of Al (20–30 at.%). The optimal coatings synthesized with one target presented properties not as good as those realized with two targets. Nevertheless, films made with one target showed a lower frictional coefficient probably due to composition control. The lack of compositional control with the use of one target limits the optimization process. With two targets, we have greater control over the film composition. This leads to higher hardness, lower stresses, and improved Young's modulus over films produced with a single CrAl target. Additionally, the morphologies are different (columnar with CrAl and dense with Cr and Al). To conclude, it seems more justified to work if possible with two independent targets.Regional Council of Burgund

    An algorithm for recovering a collection of linear cracks in a homogeneous electrical conductor from boundary measurements of voltages induced by specified current fluxes is developed. The technique is a variation of Newton's method and is based on taking weighted averages of the boundary data. The method also adaptively changes the applied current flux at each iteration to maintain maximum sensitivity to the estimated locations of the cracks

    Accuracy of least-squares methods for the Navier-Stokes equations

    Recently there has been substantial interest in least-squares finite element methods for velocity-vorticity-pressure formulations of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The main cause for this interest is the fact that algorithms for the resulting discrete equations can be devised which require the solution of only symmetric, positive definite systems of algebraic equations. On the other hand, it is well-documented that methods using the vorticity as a primary variable often yield very poor approximations. Thus, here we study the accuracy of these methods through a series of computational experiments, and also comment on theoretical error estimates. It is found, despite the failure of standard methods for deriving error estimates, that computational evidence suggests that these methods are, at the least, nearly optimally accurate. Thus, in addition to the desirable matrix properties yielded by least-squares methods, one also obtains accurate approximations
