    dissertationAs the base of the software stack, system-level software is expected to provide ecient and scalable storage, communication, security and resource management functionalities. However, there are many computationally expensive functionalities at the system level, such as encryption, packet inspection, and error correction. All of these require substantial computing power. What's more, today's application workloads have entered gigabyte and terabyte scales, which demand even more computing power. To solve the rapidly increased computing power demand at the system level, this dissertation proposes using parallel graphics pro- cessing units (GPUs) in system software. GPUs excel at parallel computing, and also have a much faster development trend in parallel performance than central processing units (CPUs). However, system-level software has been originally designed to be latency-oriented. GPUs are designed for long-running computation and large-scale data processing, which are throughput-oriented. Such mismatch makes it dicult to t the system-level software with the GPUs. This dissertation presents generic principles of system-level GPU computing developed during the process of creating our two general frameworks for integrating GPU computing in storage and network packet processing. The principles are generic design techniques and abstractions to deal with common system-level GPU computing challenges. Those principles have been evaluated in concrete cases including storage and network packet processing applications that have been augmented with GPU computing. The signicant performance improvement found in the evaluation shows the eectiveness and eciency of the proposed techniques and abstractions. This dissertation also presents a literature survey of the relatively young system-level GPU computing area, to introduce the state of the art in both applications and techniques, and also their future potentials

    GPU Computing for Cognitive Robotics

    This thesis presents the first investigation of the impact of GPU computing on cognitive robotics by providing a series of novel experiments in the area of action and language acquisition in humanoid robots and computer vision. Cognitive robotics is concerned with endowing robots with high-level cognitive capabilities to enable the achievement of complex goals in complex environments. Reaching the ultimate goal of developing cognitive robots will require tremendous amounts of computational power, which was until recently provided mostly by standard CPU processors. CPU cores are optimised for serial code execution at the expense of parallel execution, which renders them relatively inefficient when it comes to high-performance computing applications. The ever-increasing market demand for high-performance, real-time 3D graphics has evolved the GPU into a highly parallel, multithreaded, many-core processor extraordinary computational power and very high memory bandwidth. These vast computational resources of modern GPUs can now be used by the most of the cognitive robotics models as they tend to be inherently parallel. Various interesting and insightful cognitive models were developed and addressed important scientific questions concerning action-language acquisition and computer vision. While they have provided us with important scientific insights, their complexity and application has not improved much over the last years. The experimental tasks as well as the scale of these models are often minimised to avoid excessive training times that grow exponentially with the number of neurons and the training data. This impedes further progress and development of complex neurocontrollers that would be able to take the cognitive robotics research a step closer to reaching the ultimate goal of creating intelligent machines. This thesis presents several cases where the application of the GPU computing on cognitive robotics algorithms resulted in the development of large-scale neurocontrollers of previously unseen complexity enabling the conducting of the novel experiments described herein.European Commission Seventh Framework Programm

    Implementación de un algoritmo para eliminación de ruido impulsivo en imágenes y análisis comparativo de tiempos de respuesta bajo arquitectura GPU y CPU

    El presente trabajo, tuvo como propósito general determinar en procesamiento digital de imágenes, tiempos de respuesta al implementar un algoritmo en diferentes arquitecturas (CPU Y GPU), utilizando interpolación a través de funciones de base radial. Para cumplir con este objetivo, se parte de una investigación previa sobre eliminación de ruido impulsivo en imágenes, a partir de allí se plantea en base a una solución en pseudocódigo un algoritmo apropiado para la arquitectura CPU y arquitectura GPU. Sobre la arquitectura GPU se detallan las particularidades identificadas al momento de la implementación (utilizando tecnología CUDA); restricciones sobre de la plataforma y alternativas de implementación. Consecuente a la implementación, se plantea un conjunto de pruebas con imágenes, las cuales tienen ruido del tipo sal y pimienta y de diferentes dimensiones (ancho, alto), estas pruebas buscan determinar los tiempos de respuesta en cuanto a eliminación de ruido por parte del algoritmo implementado en las dos arquitecturas. Las pruebas en tiempos de respuesta generan resultados que son analizados, principalmente evidenciando una correcta eliminación de los pixeles ruidosos (que alcanzan los 55 mil en una sola imagen) en el caso de las dos arquitecturas, y adicionalmente el tiempo de respuesta claramente bajo (mayor rapidez en procesamiento) en la arquitectura CPU con respecto a la arquitectura GPU.The research had as a primary objective determine in the field of digital processing images, response times in different architectures (CPU and GPU), using interpolation trough the basis radial functions. To achieve this objective, it start with a previous research about impulsive noise elimination in images, from there its proposed an appropiate algorithm based in a pseudocode solution, to the CPU architecture and GPU architecture. For the GPU architecture is detailed several particularities identified at the implementation phase (using CUDA technology); platform restrictions and implementation work-arounds. As a result of the implementation phase, its proposed a test images, which have noise salt and pepper with different dimensions (width, height), these tests seek to determine response times about noise elimination by the algorithm implemented on the two architectures. In testing the results were analyzed, mainly showing a correct noise elimination in images (reaching up to 55 thousand noisy pixels in a image) at both CPU and GPU architectures, additionally a clearly lower response time (faster in processing) on the CPU Architecture regarding to the GPU Architecture

    Analytical cost metrics: days of future past

    2019 Summer.Includes bibliographical references.Future exascale high-performance computing (HPC) systems are expected to be increasingly heterogeneous, consisting of several multi-core CPUs and a large number of accelerators, special-purpose hardware that will increase the computing power of the system in a very energy-efficient way. Specialized, energy-efficient accelerators are also an important component in many diverse systems beyond HPC: gaming machines, general purpose workstations, tablets, phones and other media devices. With Moore's law driving the evolution of hardware platforms towards exascale, the dominant performance metric (time efficiency) has now expanded to also incorporate power/energy efficiency. This work builds analytical cost models for cost metrics such as time, energy, memory access, and silicon area. These models are used to predict the performance of applications, for performance tuning, and chip design. The idea is to work with domain specific accelerators where analytical cost models can be accurately used for performance optimization. The performance optimization problems are formulated as mathematical optimization problems. This work explores the analytical cost modeling and mathematical optimization approach in a few ways. For stencil applications and GPU architectures, the analytical cost models are developed for execution time as well as energy. The models are used for performance tuning over existing architectures, and are coupled with silicon area models of GPU architectures to generate highly efficient architecture configurations. For matrix chain products, analytical closed form solutions for off-chip data movement are built and used to minimize the total data movement cost of a minimum op count tree

    Fast algorithm for real-time rings reconstruction

    The GAP project is dedicated to study the application of GPU in several contexts in which real-time response is important to take decisions. The definition of real-time depends on the application under study, ranging from answer time of μs up to several hours in case of very computing intensive task. During this conference we presented our work in low level triggers [1] [2] and high level triggers [3] in high energy physics experiments, and specific application for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) [4] [5] and cone-beam CT [6]. Apart from the study of dedicated solution to decrease the latency due to data transport and preparation, the computing algorithms play an essential role in any GPU application. In this contribution, we show an original algorithm developed for triggers application, to accelerate the ring reconstruction in RICH detector when it is not possible to have seeds for reconstruction from external trackers

    Preventing premature convergence and proving the optimality in evolutionary algorithms

    http://ea2013.inria.fr//proceedings.pdfInternational audienceEvolutionary Algorithms (EA) usually carry out an efficient exploration of the search-space, but get often trapped in local minima and do not prove the optimality of the solution. Interval-based techniques, on the other hand, yield a numerical proof of optimality of the solution. However, they may fail to converge within a reasonable time due to their inability to quickly compute a good approximation of the global minimum and their exponential complexity. The contribution of this paper is a hybrid algorithm called Charibde in which a particular EA, Differential Evolution, cooperates with a Branch and Bound algorithm endowed with interval propagation techniques. It prevents premature convergence toward local optima and outperforms both deterministic and stochastic existing approaches. We demonstrate its efficiency on a benchmark of highly multimodal problems, for which we provide previously unknown global minima and certification of optimality
