    Exploring Higher Order Dependency Parsers

    Syntakticka analyza jejednim z nejdulezitejsich kroku pocitacoveho zpracovani pfirozenych jazyku. V teto praci se zamefujeme na formalismus zavislostni gramatiky, protoze jeho hlavnf principy, zejmena vztah fidiciho a zavisleho uzlu, se ukazaly uzitecne pro fadu rozdilnych jazyku, se zvlastnim zfetelem na vysvetleni slovosledu a vztahu mezi povrchovou strukturou a vyznamem. Vetsina modernich efektivnich algoritmu zavislostni syntakticke analyzy je zalozena na faktorizaci zavislostnich stromu. Ve vetsine techto pffstupu analyzator (parser) ztraci znacnou cast kontextove informace behem procesu faktorizace. V teto praci zkoumame, jak syntakticko-semanticke rysy ovlivnuji metody diskriminativniho strojoveho uceni vyssiho fadu pro zavislostni syntaktickou analyzu. Ukazujeme, ze lingvisticke rysy v mnoha pfipadech pfinaseji vyznamne zlepseni lispesnosti. Nejdrive pfinasime pfehled nekolika diskriminativnich metod uceni pro grafove statisticke zavislostni parsery a vysvetlujeme koncept vyssiho fadu, coz je zobecneni prace (Koo a Collins 2010) a (McDonald et al. 2006). Tonas dovede kjadru prace - rysovemu inzenyrstvi pro zavislostni parsery vyssiho fadu. Experimentujeme s nekolika syntakticko-semantickymi rysy a snazime se vysvetlit jejich teoreticke zaklady. Pokusy provadime na dvou odlisnych jazycich -...Most of the recent efficient algorithms for dependency parsing work by factoring the dependency trees. In most of these approaches, the parser loses much of the contextual information during the process of factorization. There have been approaches to build higher order dependency parsers - second order, [Carreras2007] and third order [Koo and Collins2010]. In the thesis, the approach by Koo and Collins should be further exploited in one or more ways.     Integrating source-language context into log-linear models of statistical machine translation

    The translation features typically used in state-of-the-art statistical machine translation (SMT) model dependencies between the source and target phrases, but not among the phrases in the source language themselves. A swathe of research has demonstrated that integrating source context modelling directly into log-linear phrase-based SMT (PB-SMT) and hierarchical PB-SMT (HPB-SMT), and can positively influence the weighting and selection of target phrases, and thus improve translation quality. In this thesis we present novel approaches to incorporate source-language contextual modelling into the state-of-the-art SMT models in order to enhance the quality of lexical selection. We investigate the effectiveness of use of a range of contextual features, including lexical features of neighbouring words, part-of-speech tags, supertags, sentence-similarity features, dependency information, and semantic roles. We explored a series of language pairs featuring typologically different languages, and examined the scalability of our research to larger amounts of training data. While our results are mixed across feature selections, language pairs, and learning curves, we observe that including contextual features of the source sentence in general produces improvements. The most significant improvements involve the integration of long-distance contextual features, such as dependency relations in combination with part-of-speech tags in Dutch-to-English subtitle translation, the combination of dependency parse and semantic role information in English-to-Dutch parliamentary debate translation, supertag features in English-to-Chinese translation, or combination of supertag and lexical features in English-to-Dutch subtitle translation. Furthermore, we investigate the applicability of our lexical contextual model in another closely related NLP problem, namely machine transliteration

    Corpus-based typology: Applications, challenges and some solutions

    Over the last few years, the number of corpora that can be used for language comparison has dramatically increased. The corpora are so diverse in their structure, size and annotation style, that a novice might not know where to start. The present paper charts this new and changing territory, providing a few landmarks, warning signs and safe paths. Although no corpora corpus at present can replace the traditional type of typological data based on language description in reference grammars, they corpora can help with diverse tasks, being particularly well suited for investigating probabilistic and gradient properties of languages and for discovering and interpreting cross-linguistic generalizations based on processing and communicative mechanisms. At the same time, the use of corpora for typological purposes has not only advantages and opportunities, but also numerous challenges. This paper also contains an empirical case study addressing two pertinent problems: the role of text types in language comparison and the problem of the word as a comparative concept

    An Unsolicited Soliloquy on Dependency Parsing

    Programa Oficial de Doutoramento en Computación . 5009V01[Abstract] This thesis presents work on dependency parsing covering two distinct lines of research. The first aims to develop efficient parsers so that they can be fast enough to parse large amounts of data while still maintaining decent accuracy. We investigate two techniques to achieve this. The first is a cognitively-inspired method and the second uses a model distillation method. The first technique proved to be utterly dismal, while the second was somewhat of a success. The second line of research presented in this thesis evaluates parsers. This is also done in two ways. We aim to evaluate what causes variation in parsing performance for different algorithms and also different treebanks. This evaluation is grounded in dependency displacements (the directed distance between a dependent and its head) and the subsequent distributions associated with algorithms and the distributions found in treebanks. This work sheds some light on the variation in performance for both different algorithms and different treebanks. And the second part of this area focuses on the utility of part-of-speech tags when used with parsing systems and questions the standard position of assuming that they might help but they certainly won’t hurt.[Resumen] Esta tesis presenta trabajo sobre análisis de dependencias que cubre dos líneas de investigación distintas. La primera tiene como objetivo desarrollar analizadores eficientes, de modo que sean suficientemente rápidos como para analizar grandes volúmenes de datos y, al mismo tiempo, sean suficientemente precisos. Investigamos dos métodos. El primero se basa en teorías cognitivas y el segundo usa una técnica de destilación. La primera técnica resultó un enorme fracaso, mientras que la segunda fue en cierto modo un ´éxito. La otra línea evalúa los analizadores sintácticos. Esto también se hace de dos maneras. Evaluamos la causa de la variación en el rendimiento de los analizadores para distintos algoritmos y corpus. Esta evaluación utiliza la diferencia entre las distribuciones del desplazamiento de arista (la distancia dirigida de las aristas) correspondientes a cada algoritmo y corpus. También evalúa la diferencia entre las distribuciones del desplazamiento de arista en los datos de entrenamiento y prueba. Este trabajo esclarece las variaciones en el rendimiento para algoritmos y corpus diferentes. La segunda parte de esta línea investiga la utilidad de las etiquetas gramaticales para los analizadores sintácticos.[Resumo] Esta tese presenta traballo sobre análise sintáctica, cubrindo dúas liñas de investigación. A primeira aspira a desenvolver analizadores eficientes, de maneira que sexan suficientemente rápidos para procesar grandes volumes de datos e á vez sexan precisos. Investigamos dous métodos. O primeiro baséase nunha teoría cognitiva, e o segundo usa unha técnica de destilación. O primeiro método foi un enorme fracaso, mentres que o segundo foi en certo modo un éxito. A outra liña avalúa os analizadores sintácticos. Esto tamén se fai de dúas maneiras. Avaliamos a causa da variación no rendemento dos analizadores para distintos algoritmos e corpus. Esta avaliaci´on usa a diferencia entre as distribucións do desprazamento de arista (a distancia dirixida das aristas) correspondentes aos algoritmos e aos corpus. Tamén avalía a diferencia entre as distribucións do desprazamento de arista nos datos de adestramento e proba. Este traballo esclarece as variacións no rendemento para algoritmos e corpus diferentes.     [EU]Lan honetan Ebaluatoia aurkezten da, eskala handiko ingelesa-euskara itzulpen automatikoko ebaluazio kanpaina, komunitate-elkarlanean oinarritua. Bost sistemaren itzulpen kalitatea konparatzea izan da kanpainaren helburua, zehazki, bi sistema estatistiko, erregeletan oinarritutako bat eta sistema hibrido bat (IXA taldean garatuak) eta Google Translate. Emaitzetan oinarrituta, sistemen sailkapen bat egin dugu, baita etorkizuneko ikerkuntza bideratuko duten zenbait analisi kualitatibo ere, hain zuzen, ebaluazio-bildumako azpi-multzoen analisia, iturburuko esaldien analisi estrukturala eta itzulpenen errore-analisia. Lanak analisi hauen hastapenak aurkezten ditu, etorkizunean zein motatako analisietan sakondu erakutsiko digutenak.[EN]This dissertation reports on the crowd-based large-scale English-Basque machine translation evaluation campaign, Ebaluatoia. This initiative aimed to compare system quality for five machine translation systems: two statistical systems, a rule- based system and a hybrid system developed within the IXA group, and an external system, Google Translate. We have established a ranking of the systems under study and performed qualitative analyses to guide further research. In particular, we have carried out initial subset evaluation, structural analysis and e rror analysis to help identify where we should place future analysis effort
