Data compression for satellite images
An efficient data compression system is presented for satellite pictures and two grey level pictures derived from satellite pictures. The compression techniques take advantages of the correlation between adjacent picture elements. Several source coding methods are investigated. Double delta coding is presented and shown to be the most efficient. Both predictive differential quantizing technique and double delta coding can be significantly improved by applying a background skipping technique. An extension code is constructed. This code requires very little storage space and operates efficiently. Simulation results are presented for various coding schemes and source codes
Coding and Decoding Schemes for MSE and Image Transmission
In this work we explore possibilities for coding and decoding tailor-made for
mean squared error evaluation of error in contexts such as image transmission.
To do so, we introduce a loss function that expresses the overall performance
of a coding and decoding scheme for discrete channels and that exchanges the
usual goal of minimizing the error probability to that of minimizing the
expected loss. In this environment we explore the possibilities of using
ordered decoders to create a message-wise unequal error protection (UEP), where
the most valuable information is protected by placing in its proximity
information words that differ by a small valued error. We give explicit
examples, using scale-of-gray images, including small-scale performance
analysis and visual simulations for the BSMC.Comment: Submitted to IEEE Transactions on Information Theor
Multiresolution vector quantization
Multiresolution source codes are data compression algorithms yielding embedded source descriptions. The decoder of a multiresolution code can build a source reproduction by decoding the embedded bit stream in part or in whole. All decoding procedures start at the beginning of the binary source description and decode some fraction of that string. Decoding a small portion of the binary string gives a low-resolution reproduction; decoding more yields a higher resolution reproduction; and so on. Multiresolution vector quantizers are block multiresolution source codes. This paper introduces algorithms for designing fixed- and variable-rate multiresolution vector quantizers. Experiments on synthetic data demonstrate performance close to the theoretical performance limit. Experiments on natural images demonstrate performance improvements of up to 8 dB over tree-structured vector quantizers. Some of the lessons learned through multiresolution vector quantizer design lend insight into the design of more sophisticated multiresolution codes
Data compression for full motion video transmission
Clearly transmission of visual information will be a major, if not dominant, factor in determining the requirements for, and assessing the performance of the Space Exploration Initiative (SEI) communications systems. Projected image/video requirements which are currently anticipated for SEI mission scenarios are presented. Based on this information and projected link performance figures, the image/video data compression requirements which would allow link closure are identified. Finally several approaches which could satisfy some of the compression requirements are presented and possible future approaches which show promise for more substantial compression performance improvement are discussed
