    The relationship between visual discomfort and cortical excitability in cone-opponent stimuli

    Increased colour contrast can induce visual discomfort, but there is little research on the effect of hue. Colour is processed via one or more information streams or channels. We hypothesized that hues which activate more than one channel would induce greater visual discomfort, as they will demand greater neural resources. Normally-sighted young observers made discomfort judgments of isoluminant stimuli of varying hue and contrast whilst EEG was recorded. As predicted, stimuli recruiting more than one channel were more uncomfortable, and this increased with contrast. Uncomfortable stimuli showed increased N2 event-related potentials and decreased alpha-band oscillations, potentially indicating increased neural excitability. This is evidence that increased neural responses are related to visual discomfort for chromatic stimuli. Furthermore, it suggests that the origins of visual discomfort are in early visual areas, when colour is represented in a cone-opponent space, rather than later areas where colour representation is determined by perceptual similarity

    Examining sensor-based physical activity recognition and monitoring for healthcare using Internet of Things: A systematic review.

    Due to importantly beneficial effects on physical and mental health and strong association with many rehabilitation programs, Physical Activity Recognition and Monitoring (PARM) have been considered as a key paradigm for smart healthcare. Traditional methods for PARM focus on controlled environments with the aim of increasing the types of identifiable activity subjects complete and improving recognition accuracy and system robustness by means of novel body-worn sensors or advanced learning algorithms. The emergence of the Internet of Things (IoT) enabling technology is transferring PARM studies to open and connected uncontrolled environments by connecting heterogeneous cost-effective wearable devices and mobile apps. Little is currently known about whether traditional PARM technologies can tackle the new challenges of IoT environments and how to effectively harness and improve these technologies. In an effort to understand the use of IoT technologies in PARM studies, this paper will give a systematic review, critically examining PARM studies from a typical IoT layer-based perspective. It will firstly summarize the state-of-the-art in traditional PARM methodologies as used in the healthcare domain, including sensory, feature extraction and recognition techniques. The paper goes on to identify some new research trends and challenges of PARM studies in the IoT environments, and discusses some key enabling techniques for tackling them. Finally, this paper consider some of the successful case studies in the area and look at the possible future industrial applications of PARM in smart healthcare

    Acoustic sequences in non-human animals: a tutorial review and prospectus.

    Animal acoustic communication often takes the form of complex sequences, made up of multiple distinct acoustic units. Apart from the well-known example of birdsong, other animals such as insects, amphibians, and mammals (including bats, rodents, primates, and cetaceans) also generate complex acoustic sequences. Occasionally, such as with birdsong, the adaptive role of these sequences seems clear (e.g. mate attraction and territorial defence). More often however, researchers have only begun to characterise - let alone understand - the significance and meaning of acoustic sequences. Hypotheses abound, but there is little agreement as to how sequences should be defined and analysed. Our review aims to outline suitable methods for testing these hypotheses, and to describe the major limitations to our current and near-future knowledge on questions of acoustic sequences. This review and prospectus is the result of a collaborative effort between 43 scientists from the fields of animal behaviour, ecology and evolution, signal processing, machine learning, quantitative linguistics, and information theory, who gathered for a 2013 workshop entitled, 'Analysing vocal sequences in animals'. Our goal is to present not just a review of the state of the art, but to propose a methodological framework that summarises what we suggest are the best practices for research in this field, across taxa and across disciplines. We also provide a tutorial-style introduction to some of the most promising algorithmic approaches for analysing sequences. We divide our review into three sections: identifying the distinct units of an acoustic sequence, describing the different ways that information can be contained within a sequence, and analysing the structure of that sequence. Each of these sections is further subdivided to address the key questions and approaches in that area. We propose a uniform, systematic, and comprehensive approach to studying sequences, with the goal of clarifying research terms used in different fields, and facilitating collaboration and comparative studies. Allowing greater interdisciplinary collaboration will facilitate the investigation of many important questions in the evolution of communication and sociality.This review was developed at an investigative workshop, “Analyzing Animal Vocal Communication Sequences” that took place on October 21–23 2013 in Knoxville, Tennessee, sponsored by the National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis (NIMBioS).     Neurobiological markers for remission and persistence of childhood attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder

    Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most prevalent neurodevelopmental disorders in children. Symptoms of childhood ADHD persist into adulthood in around 65% of patients, which elevates the risk for a number of adverse outcomes, resulting in substantial individual and societal burden. A neurodevelopmental double dissociation model is proposed based on existing studies in which the early onset of childhood ADHD is suggested to associate with dysfunctional subcortical structures that remain static throughout the lifetime; while diminution of symptoms over development could link to optimal development of prefrontal cortex. Current existing studies only assess basic measures including regional brain activation and connectivity, which have limited capacity to characterize the functional brain as a high performance parallel information processing system, the field lacks systems-level investigations of the structural and functional patterns that significantly contribute to the symptom remission and persistence in adults with childhood ADHD. Furthermore, traditional statistical methods estimate group differences only within a voxel or region of interest (ROI) at a time without having the capacity to explore how ROIs interact in linear and/or non-linear ways, as they quickly become overburdened when attempting to combine predictors and their interactions from high-dimensional imaging data set. This dissertation is the first study to apply ensemble learning techniques (ELT) in multimodal neuroimaging features from a sample of adults with childhood ADHD and controls, who have been clinically followed up since childhood. A total of 36 adult probands who were diagnosed with ADHD combined-type during childhood and 36 matched normal controls (NCs) are involved in this dissertation research. Thirty-six adult probands are further split into 18 remitters (ADHD-R) and 18 persisters (ADHD-P) based on the symptoms in their adulthood from DSM-IV ADHD criteria. Cued attention task-based fMRI, structural MRI, and diffusion tensor imaging data from each individual are analyzed. The high-dimensional neuroimaging features, including pair-wise regional connectivity and global/nodal topological properties of the functional brain network for cue-evoked attention process, regional cortical thickness and surface area, subcortical volume, volume and fractional anisotropy of major white matter fiber tract for each subject are calculated. In addition, all the currently available optimization strategies for ensemble learning techniques (i.e., voting, bagging, boosting and stacking techniques) are tested in a pool of semi-final classification results generated by seven basic classifiers, including K-Nearest Neighbors, support vector machine (SVM), logistic regression, NaĂŻve Bayes, linear discriminant analysis, random forest, and multilayer perceptron. As hypothesized, results indicate that the features of nodal efficiency in right inferior frontal gyrus, right middle frontal (MFG)-inferior parietal (IPL) functional connectivity, and right amygdala volume significantly contributed to accurate discrimination between ADHD probands and controls; higher nodal efficiency of right MFG greatly contributed to inattentive and hyperactive/impulsive symptom remission, while higher right MFG-IPL functional connectivity strongly linked to symptom persistence in adults with childhood ADHD. The utilization of ELTs indicates that the bagging-based ELT with the base model of SVM achieves the best results, with the most significant improvement of the area under the receiver of operating characteristic curve (0.89 for ADHD probands vs. NCs, and 0.9 for ADHD-P vs. ADHD-R). The outcomes of this dissertation research have considerable value for the development of novel interventions that target mechanisms associated with recovery

    Machine learning in the real world with multiple objectives

    Machine learning (ML) is ubiquitous in many real-world applications. Existing ML systems are based on optimizing a single quality metric such as prediction accuracy. These metrics typically do not fully align with real-world design constraints such as computation, latency, fairness, and acquisition costs that we encounter in real-world applications. In this thesis, we develop ML methods for optimizing prediction accuracy while accounting for such real-world constraints. In particular, we introduce multi-objective learning in two different setups: resource-efficient prediction and algorithmic fairness in language models. First, we focus on decreasing the test-time computational costs of prediction systems. Budget constraints arise in many machine learning problems. Computational costs limit the usage of many models on small devices such as IoT or mobile phones and increase the energy consumption in cloud computing. We design systems that allow on-the-fly modification of the prediction model for each input sample. These sample-adaptive systems allow us to leverage wide variability in sample complexity where we learn policies for selecting cheap models for low complexity instances and using descriptive models only for complex ones. We utilize multiple--objective approach where one minimizes the system cost while preserving predictive accuracy. We demonstrate significant speed-ups in the fields of computer vision, structured prediction, natural language processing, and deep learning. In the context of fairness, we first demonstrate that a naive application of ML methods runs the risk of amplifying social biases present in data. This danger is particularly acute for methods based on word embeddings, which are increasingly gaining importance in many natural language processing applications of ML. We show that word embeddings trained on Google News articles exhibit female/male gender stereotypes. We demonstrate that geometrically, gender bias is captured by unique directions in the word embedding vector space. To remove bias we formulate a empirical risk objective with fairness constraints to remove stereotypes from embeddings while maintaining desired associations. Using crowd-worker evaluation as well as standard benchmarks, we empirically demonstrate that our algorithms significantly reduces gender bias in embeddings, while preserving its useful properties such as the ability to cluster related concepts

    Divergent Criticality – A Mechanism of Neural Function for Perception and Learning

    The natural world presents opportunities to all organisms as they compete for the biological-value afforded to them through their ecological engagement. This presents two fundamental requirements for perceiving such opportunities: to be able to recognise value and learning how to access new value. Though many theoretical accounts of how we might achieve such selectionist ends have been explored – how ‘perception’ and ‘learning’ resonate with life’s challenges and opportunities, to date, no explanation has yet been able to naturalise such perception adequately in the Universal laws that govern our existence – not only for explaining the human experience of the world, but in exploring the true nature of our perception. This thesis explores our perceptions of engaging with the world and seeks to explain how the demands of our experiences resonate with the efficient functioning of our brain. It proposes, that in a world of challenge and opportunity, rather than the efficient functioning of our neural resources, it is, instead, the optimising of ‘learning’ that is selected for, as an evolutionary priority. Building on existing literature in the fields of Phenomenology, Free Energy and Neuroscience, this thesis considers perception and learning as synonymous with the cognitive constructs of an ‘attention’ tuned for learning optimisation, and explores the processes of learning in neural function. It addresses the philosophical issues of how an individual’s perception of subjective experiences, might provide some empirical objectivity in proposing a ‘Tolerance’ hypothesis. This is a relative definition able to coordinate a ‘perception of experience’ in terms of an learning-function, grounded in free-energy theory (the laws of physics) and the ecological dynamics of a spontaneous or ‘self- organising’ mechanism – Divergent Criticality. The methodology incorporated three studies: Pilot, Developmental and Exploratory. Over the three studies, Divergent Criticality was tested by developing a functional Affordance measure to address the Research Question – are perceptions as affective-cognitions made aware as reflecting the agential mediation of a self-regulating, optimal learning mechanism? Perception questionnaires of Situational Interest and Self-concept were used in Study One and Study Two to investigate their suitability in addressing the Research Question. Here, Factor Analysis and Structural Equation Modelling assessed the validity and reliability of these measures, developing robust questionnaires and a research design for testing Divergent Criticality. In Study Three, the Divergent Criticality hypothesis was found to be significant, supporting that a Divergent Criticality mechanism is in operation: When individuals are engaging with dynamic ecological challenges, perception is affective in accordance with Tolerance Optimisation, demonstrating that a Divergent Criticality mechanism is driving individuals to the limits of their Effectivity – an optimal learning state which is fundamental to life and naturalised in Universal laws
