    Towards an Automatic Extraction of Smartphone Users' Contextual Behaviors

    International audienceThis paper presents a new method for automatically extracting smartphone users' contextual behaviors from the digital traces collected during their interactions with their devices. Our goal is in particular to understand the impact of users' context (e.g., location, time, environment, etc.) on the applications they run on their smartphones. We propose a methodology to analyze digital traces and to automatically identify the significant information that characterizes users' behaviors. In earlier work, we have used Formal Concept Analysis and Galois lattices to extract relevant knowledge from heterogeneous and complex contextual data; however, the interpretation of the obtained Galois lattices was performed manually. In this article, we aim at automating this interpretation process, through the provision of original metrics. Therefore our methodology returns relevant information without requiring any expertise in data analysis. We illustrate our contribution on real data collected from volunteer users

    Intention Prediction Mechanism In An Intentional Pervasive Information System

    International audienceNowadays, the development of pervasive technologies has allowed the improvement of services availability. These services, offered by information systems (IS), are becoming more pervasive, i.e., accessed anytime, anywhere. However, those pervasive information systems (PIS) remain too complex for the user, who just wants a service satisfying his needs. This complexity requires considerable efforts from the user in order to select the most appropriate service. Thus, an important challenge in PIS is to reduce user's understanding effort. In this chapter, we propose to enhance PIS transparency and productivity through a user-centred vision based on an intentional approach. We propose an intention prediction approach. This approach allows anticipating user's future requirements, offering the most suitable service in a transparent and discrete way. This intention prediction approach is guided by the user's context. It is based on the analysis of the user's previous situations in order to learn user's behaviour in a dynamic environment

    Design-time formal verification for smart environments: an exploratory perspective

    Smart environments (SmE) are richly integrated with multiple heterogeneous devices; they perform the operations in intelligent manner by considering the context and actions/behaviors of the users. Their major objective is to enable the environment to provide ease and comfort to the users. The reliance on these systems demands consistent behavior. The versatility of devices, user behavior and intricacy of communication complicate the modeling and verification of SmE's reliable behavior. Of the many available modeling and verification techniques, formal methods appear to be the most promising. Due to a large variety of implementation scenarios and support for conditional behavior/processing, the concept of SmE is applicable to diverse areas which calls for focused research. As a result, a number of modeling and verification techniques have been made available for designers. This paper explores and puts into perspective the modeling and verification techniques based on an extended literature survey. These techniques mainly focus on some specific aspects, with a few overlapping scenarios (such as user interaction, devices interaction and control, context awareness, etc.), which were of the interest to the researchers based on their specialized competencies. The techniques are categorized on the basis of various factors and formalisms considered for the modeling and verification and later analyzed. The results show that no surveyed technique maintains a holistic perspective; each technique is used for the modeling and verification of specific SmE aspects.     Ultra-reliable communications for industrial internet of things : design considerations and channel modeling

    Factory automation is the next industrial revolution. 5G and IIoT are enabling smart factories to seamlessly create a network of wirelessly connected machines and people that can instantaneously collect, analyze, and distribute real-time data. A 5G-enabled communication network for IIOT will boost overall efficiency, launching a new era of market opportunities and economic growth. This article presents the 5G-enabled system architecture and ultra-reliable use cases in smart factories associated with automated warehouses. In particular, for URLLC-based cases, key techniques and their corresponding solutions, including diversity for high reliability, short packets for low latency, and on-the-fly channel estimation and decoding for fast receiver processing, are discussed. Then the channel modeling requirements concerning technologies and systems are also identified in industrial scenarios.     Cross-Platform Implementation of an SSVEP-Based BCI for the Control of a 6-DOF Robotic Arm

    [EN] Robotics has been successfully applied in the design of collaborative robots for assistance to people with motor disabilities. However, man-machine interaction is difficult for those who suffer severe motor disabilities. The aim of this study was to test the feasibility of a low-cost robotic arm control system with an EEG-based brain-computer interface (BCI). The BCI system relays on the Steady State Visually Evoked Potentials (SSVEP) paradigm. A cross-platform application was obtained in C++. This C++ platform, together with the open-source software Openvibe was used to control a Staubli robot arm model TX60. Communication between Openvibe and the robot was carried out through the Virtual Reality Peripheral Network (VRPN) protocol. EEG signals were acquired with the 8-channel Enobio amplifier from Neuroelectrics. For the processing of the EEG signals, Common Spatial Pattern (CSP) filters and a Linear Discriminant Analysis classifier (LDA) were used. Five healthy subjects tried the BCI. This work allowed the communication and integration of a well-known BCI development platform such as Openvibe with the specific control software of a robot arm such as Staubli TX60 using the VRPN protocol. In this article, we will explore and exploit the concepts and architectures of Big Data, in particular through the Hadoop open-source framework, and see how it meets the needs set out above, in its cluster structure, its components, its Lambda and Kappa architectures, and so on. We are also going to deploy Hadoop in a virtualized Linux environment, with several nodes, under the Oracle Virtual Box virtualization software, and use the experimental method to compare the processing time of the MapReduce algorithm on two DataSets with successively one, two, and three and four Datanodes, and thus observe the gains in processing time with the increase in the number of nodes in the cluste

    Robust perception & Decision-making for safe navigation in open and dynamic environments populated by human beings is an open and challenging scientific problem. Traditional approaches do not provide adequate solutions for these problems, mainly because these environments are partially unknown, open and subject to strong constraints to be satisfied (in particular high dynamicity and uncertainty). This means that the proposed solutions have to take simultaneously into account characteristics such as real-time processing, temporary occultation or false detections, dynamic changes in the scene, prediction of the future dynamic behaviors of the surrounding moving entities, continuous assessment of the collision risk, or decision-making for safe navigation. This research report presents how we have addressed this problem over the two last decades, as well as an outline of our Bayesian & IA approach for solving the Embedded Perception and Decision-making problems

    From Social Simulation to Integrative System Design

    As the recent financial crisis showed, today there is a strong need to gain "ecological perspective" of all relevant interactions in socio-economic-techno-environmental systems. For this, we suggested to set-up a network of Centers for integrative systems design, which shall be able to run all potentially relevant scenarios, identify causality chains, explore feedback and cascading effects for a number of model variants, and determine the reliability of their implications (given the validity of the underlying models). They will be able to detect possible negative side effect of policy decisions, before they occur. The Centers belonging to this network of Integrative Systems Design Centers would be focused on a particular field, but they would be part of an attempt to eventually cover all relevant areas of society and economy and integrate them within a "Living Earth Simulator". The results of all research activities of such Centers would be turned into informative input for political Decision Arenas. For example, Crisis Observatories (for financial instabilities, shortages of resources, environmental change, conflict, spreading of diseases, etc.) would be connected with such Decision Arenas for the purpose of visualization, in order to make complex interdependencies understandable to scientists, decision-makers, and the general public.Comment: 34 pages, Visioneer White Paper, see http://www.visioneer.ethz.c

    Catalogue de patrons de sécurité, de fiabilité et de sûreté dans le contexte des habitats intelligents pour personnes ayant des troubles cognitifs

    D’après les derniers rapports de recensement, les pays occidentaux font face à une augmentation de la population vieillissante. Le vieillissement normal de la population entraîne une augmentation de maladies ou d’accidents. Ceci conduit à la perte d’autonomie et réduit la qualité de vie des personnes âgées notamment les personnes atteintes de la maladie d’Alzheimer. Cette dernière provoque principalement des pertes cognitives. Pour pallier à ce problème, un habitat rendu intelligent grâce à l’informatique diffuse permet d’interagir avec son occupant. Un tel habitat intelligent améliorera ou lui redonnera son autonomie et l’aidera à réaliser ses activités, voire interviendra pour éviter des situations à risque. Le développement d’habitat intelligent amène de nouveaux défis en matière de sécurité, de fiabilité et de sûreté du patient. Il nécessite que les questions de sécurité, de fiabilité et de sûreté soient prises en compte dès le départ par les développeurs d’applications du domaine des habitats intelligents. Malheureusement, ces développeurs ne sont pas experts en sécurité, en fiabilité ou et en sûreté. Ces aspects sont souvent remis à plus tard, ce qui aboutit généralement à des applications fonctionnelles, mais peu sécuritaires. Les déficits cognitifs imposent aussi des contraintes supplémentaires ou nouvelles en ce qui a trait à la sécurité, la fiabilité et la sûreté. Dans ce contexte, cette thèse propose de répondre aux problèmes de sécurité, de fiabilité et de sûreté des patients souffrant de troubles cognitifs lors de leur séjour dans un habitat intelligent. Pour cela, un catalogue de patrons de sécurité, de fiabilité et de sûreté est créé pour fournir un outil aux développeurs d’application de ce domaine. Dans un premier temps, une liste de besoins de sécurité, de fiabilité et de sûreté est identifiée à partir de scénarios illustrant la vie du patient et ses interactions avec les intervenants du service de santé, sa famille et son nouvel environnement. Ensuite les solutions identifiées sont encapsulées sous forme de patrons et regroupées dans un catalogue mis à la disposition des développeurs. Les patrons de ce catalogue sont alors utilisés pour répondre aux besoins initialement formulés soient isolément, soient en combinaison avec d’autres patrons. La discussion finale permettra d’éclairer les avantages et limites de cette approche, et présentera des pistes à suivre pour étendre le catalogue de patrons
