Short Block-length Codes for Ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communications
This paper reviews the state of the art channel coding techniques for
ultra-reliable low latency communication (URLLC). The stringent requirements of
URLLC services, such as ultra-high reliability and low latency, have made it
the most challenging feature of the fifth generation (5G) mobile systems. The
problem is even more challenging for the services beyond the 5G promise, such
as tele-surgery and factory automation, which require latencies less than 1ms
and failure rate as low as . The very low latency requirements of
URLLC do not allow traditional approaches such as re-transmission to be used to
increase the reliability. On the other hand, to guarantee the delay
requirements, the block length needs to be small, so conventional channel
codes, originally designed and optimised for moderate-to-long block-lengths,
show notable deficiencies for short blocks. This paper provides an overview on
channel coding techniques for short block lengths and compares them in terms of
performance and complexity. Several important research directions are

An Opportunistic Error Correction Layer for OFDM Systems
In this paper, we propose a novel cross layer scheme to lower power\ud
consumption of ADCs in OFDM systems, which is based on resolution\ud
adaptive ADCs and Fountain codes. The key part in the new proposed\ud
system is that the dynamic range of ADCs can be reduced by\ud
discarding the packets which are transmitted over 'bad' sub\ud
carriers. Correspondingly, the power consumption in ADCs can be\ud
reduced. Also, the new system does not process all the packets but\ud
only processes surviving packets. This new error correction layer\ud
does not require perfect channel knowledge, so it can be used in a\ud
realistic system where the channel is estimated. With this new\ud
approach, more than 70% of the energy consumption in the ADC can be\ud
saved compared with the conventional IEEE 802.11a WLAN system under\ud
the same channel conditions and throughput. The ADC in a receiver\ud
can consume up to 50% of the total baseband energy. Moreover, to\ud
reduce the overhead of Fountain codes, we apply message passing and\ud
Gaussian elimination in the decoder. In this way, the overhead is\ud
3% for a small block size (i.e. 500 packets). Using both methods\ud
results in an efficient system with low delay
Error Correction For Automotive Telematics Systems
One benefit of data communication over the voice channel of the cellular network is to reliably transmit real-time high priority data in case of life critical situations. An important implementation of this use-case is the pan-European eCall automotive standard, which has already been deployed since 2018. This is the first international standard for mobile emergency call that was adopted by multiple regions in Europe and the world. Other countries in the world are currently working on deploying a similar emergency communication system, such as in Russia and China. Moreover, many experiments and road tests are conducted yearly to validate and improve the requirements of the system. The results have proven that the requirements are unachievable thus far, with a success rate of emergency data delivery of only 70%.
The eCall in-band modem transmits emergency information from the in-vehicle system (IVS) over the voice channel of the circuit switch real time communication system to the public safety answering point (PSAP) in case of a collision. The voice channel is characterized by the non-linear vocoder which is designed to compress speech waveforms. In addition, multipath fading, caused by the surrounding buildings and hills, results in severe signal distortion and causes delays in the transmission of the emergency information. Therefore, to reliably transmit data over the voice channels, the in-band modem modulates the data into speech-like (SL) waveforms, and employs a powerful forward error correcting (FEC) code to secure the real-time transmission.
In this dissertation, the Turbo coded performance of the eCall in-band modem is first evaluated through the adaptive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel and the adaptive multi-rate (AMR) voice channel. The modulation used is biorthogonal pulse position modulation (BPPM). Simulations are conducted for both the fast and robust eCall modem. The results show that the distortion added by the vocoder is significantly large and degrades the system performance. In addition, the robust modem performs better than the fast modem. For instance, to achieve a bit error rate (BER) of 10^{-6} using the AMR compression rate of 7.4 kbps, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) required is 5.5 dB for the robust modem while a SNR of 7.5 dB is required for the fast modem.
On the other hand, the fading effect is studied in the eCall channel. It was shown that the fading distribution does not follow a Rayleigh distribution. The performance of the in-band modem is evaluated through the AWGN, AMR and fading channel. The results are compared with a Rayleigh fading channel. The analysis shows that strong fading still exists in the voice channel after power control. The results explain the large delays and failure of the emergency data transmission to the PSAP. Thus, the eCall standard needs to re-evaluate their requirements in order to consider the impact of fading on the transmission of the modulated signals. The results can be directly applied to design real-time emergency communication systems, including modulation and coding

Challenges and Some New Directions in Channel Coding
Three areas of ongoing research in channel coding are surveyed, and recent developments are presented in each area: spatially coupled Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) codes, nonbinary LDPC codes, and polar coding.This is the author accepted manuscript. 20 years of turbo coding and energy-aware design guidelines for energy-constrained wireless applications
During the last two decades, wireless communication has been revolutionized by near-capacity error-correcting codes (ECCs), such as turbo codes (TCs), which offer a lower bit error ratio (BER) than their predecessors, without requiring an increased transmission energy consumption (EC). Hence, TCs have found widespread employment in spectrum-constrained wireless communication applications, such as cellular telephony, wireless local area network, and broadcast systems. Recently, however, TCs have also been considered for energy-constrained wireless communication applications, such as wireless sensor networks and the `Internet of Things.' In these applications, TCs may also be employed for reducing the required transmission EC, instead of improving the BER. However, TCs have relatively high computational complexities, and hence, the associated signal-processing-related ECs are not insignificant. Therefore, when parameterizing TCs for employment in energy-constrained applications, both the processing EC and the transmission EC must be jointly considered. In this tutorial, we investigate holistic design methodologies conceived for this purpose. We commence by introducing turbo coding in detail, highlighting the various parameters of TCs and characterizing their impact on the encoded bit rate, on the radio frequency bandwidth requirement, on the transmission EC and on the BER. Following this, energy-efficient TC decoder application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) architecture designs are exemplified, and the processing EC is characterized as a function of the TC parameters.
