Measuring and Managing Answer Quality for Online Data-Intensive Services
Online data-intensive services parallelize query execution across distributed
software components. Interactive response time is a priority, so online query
executions return answers without waiting for slow running components to
finish. However, data from these slow components could lead to better answers.
We propose Ubora, an approach to measure the effect of slow running components
on the quality of answers. Ubora randomly samples online queries and executes
them twice. The first execution elides data from slow components and provides
fast online answers; the second execution waits for all components to complete.
Ubora uses memoization to speed up mature executions by replaying network
messages exchanged between components. Our systems-level implementation works
for a wide range of platforms, including Hadoop/Yarn, Apache Lucene, the
EasyRec Recommendation Engine, and the OpenEphyra question answering system.
Ubora computes answer quality much faster than competing approaches that do not
use memoization. With Ubora, we show that answer quality can and should be used
to guide online admission control. Our adaptive controller processed 37% more
queries than a competing controller guided by the rate of timeouts.Comment: Technical Repor
Knowledge Representation Concepts for Automated SLA Management
Outsourcing of complex IT infrastructure to IT service providers has
increased substantially during the past years. IT service providers must be
able to fulfil their service-quality commitments based upon predefined Service
Level Agreements (SLAs) with the service customer. They need to manage, execute
and maintain thousands of SLAs for different customers and different types of
services, which needs new levels of flexibility and automation not available
with the current technology. The complexity of contractual logic in SLAs
requires new forms of knowledge representation to automatically draw inferences
and execute contractual agreements. A logic-based approach provides several
advantages including automated rule chaining allowing for compact knowledge
representation as well as flexibility to adapt to rapidly changing business
requirements. We suggest adequate logical formalisms for representation and
enforcement of SLA rules and describe a proof-of-concept implementation. The
article describes selected formalisms of the ContractLog KR and their adequacy
for automated SLA management and presents results of experiments to demonstrate

What Does Aspect-Oriented Programming Mean for Functional Programmers?
Aspect-Oriented Programming (AOP) aims at modularising crosscutting concerns that show up in software. The success of AOP has been almost viral and nearly all areas in Software Engineering and Programming Languages have become "infected" by the AOP bug in one way or another. Interestingly the functional programming community (and, in particular, the pure functional programming community) seems to be resistant to the pandemic. The goal of this paper is to debate the possible causes of the functional programming community's resistance and to raise awareness and interest by showcasing the benefits that could be gained from having a functional AOP language. At the same time, we identify the main challenges and explore the possible design-space
Incremental parallel and distributed systems
Incremental computation strives for efficient successive runs of applications by re-executing only those parts of the computation that are affected by a given input change instead of recomputing everything from scratch. To realize the benefits of incremental computation, researchers and practitioners are developing new systems where the application programmer can provide an efficient update mechanism for changing application data. Unfortunately, most of the existing solutions are limiting because they not only depart from existing programming models, but also require programmers to devise an incremental update mechanism (or a dynamic algorithm) on a per-application basis.
In this thesis, we present incremental parallel and distributed systems that enable existing real-world applications to automatically benefit from efficient incremental updates. Our approach neither requires departure from current models of programming, nor the design and implementation of dynamic algorithms.
To achieve these goals, we have designed and built the following incremental systems: (i) Incoop — a system for incremental MapReduce computation; (ii) Shredder — a GPU-accelerated system for incremental storage; (iii) Slider — a stream processing platform for incremental sliding window analytics; and (iv) iThreads — a threading library for parallel incremental computation. Our experience with these systems shows that significant performance can be achieved for existing applications without requiring any additional effort from programmers.Inkrementelle Berechnungen ermöglichen die effizientere Ausführung aufeinanderfolgender Anwendungsaufrufe, indem nur die Teilbereiche der Anwendung erneut ausgefürt werden, die von den Änderungen der Eingabedaten betroffen sind. Dieses Berechnungsverfahren steht dem konventionellen und vollständig neu berechnenden Verfahren gegenüber. Um den Vorteil inkrementeller Berechnungen auszunutzen, entwickeln sowohl Wissenschaft als auch Industrie neue Systeme, bei denen der Anwendungsprogrammierer den effizienten Aktualisierungsmechanismus für die Änderung der Anwendungsdaten bereitstellt. Bedauerlicherweise lassen sich existierende Lösungen meist nur eingeschränkt anwenden, da sie das konventionelle Programmierungsmodel beibehalten und dadurch die erneute Entwicklung vom Programmierer des inkrementellen Aktualisierungsmechanismus (oder einen dynamischen Algorithmus) für jede Anwendung verlangen.

NetSquid, a NETwork Simulator for QUantum Information using Discrete events
In order to bring quantum networks into the real world, we would like to
determine the requirements of quantum network protocols including the
underlying quantum hardware. Because detailed architecture proposals are
generally too complex for mathematical analysis, it is natural to employ
numerical simulation. Here we introduce NetSquid, the NETwork Simulator for
QUantum Information using Discrete events, a discrete-event based platform for
simulating all aspects of quantum networks and modular quantum computing
systems, ranging from the physical layer and its control plane up to the
application level. We study several use cases to showcase NetSquid's power,
including detailed physical layer simulations of repeater chains based on
nitrogen vacancy centres in diamond as well as atomic ensembles. We also study
the control plane of a quantum switch beyond its analytically known regime, and
showcase NetSquid's ability to investigate large networks by simulating

Making Data Storage Efficient in the Era of Cloud Computing
We enter the era of cloud computing in the last decade, as many paradigm shifts are happening on how people write and deploy applications. Despite the advancement of cloud computing, data storage abstractions have not evolved much, causing inefficiencies in performance, cost, and security.
This dissertation proposes a novel approach to make data storage efficient in the era of cloud computing by building new storage abstractions and systems that bridge the gap between cloud computing and data storage and simplify development. We build four systems to address four data inefficiencies in cloud computing.
The first system, Grandet, solves the data storage inefficiency caused by the paradigm shift from upfront provisioning to a variety of pay-as-you-go cloud services. Grandet is an extensible storage system that significantly reduces storage costs for web applications deployed in the cloud. Under the hood, it supports multiple heterogeneous stores and unifies them by placing each data object at the store deemed most economical. Our results show that Grandet reduces their costs by an average of 42.4%, and it is fast, scalable, and easy to use.
The second system, Unic, solves the data inefficiency caused by the paradigm shift from single-tenancy to multi-tenancy. Unic securely deduplicates general computations. It exports a cache service that allows cloud applications running on behalf of mutually distrusting users to memoize and reuse computation results, thereby improving performance. Unic achieves both integrity and secrecy through a novel use of code attestation, and it provides a simple yet expressive API that enables applications to deduplicate their own rich computations. Our results show that Unic is easy to use, speeds up applications by an average of 7.58x, and with little storage overhead.
The third system, Lambdata, solves the data inefficiency caused by the paradigm shift to serverless computing, where developers only write core business logic, and cloud service providers maintain all the infrastructure. Lambdata is a novel serverless computing system that enables developers to declare a cloud function's data intents, including both data read and data written. Once data intents are made explicit, Lambdata performs a variety of optimizations to improve speed, including caching data locally and scheduling functions based on code and data locality. Our results show that Lambdata achieves an average speedup of 1.51x on the turnaround time of practical workloads and reduces monetary cost by 16.5%.
The fourth system, CleanOS, solves the data inefficiency caused by the paradigm shift from desktop computers to smartphones always connected to the cloud. CleanOS is a new Android-based operating system that manages sensitive data rigorously and maintains a clean environment at all times. It identifies and tracks sensitive data, encrypts it with a key, and evicts that key to the cloud when the data is not in active use on the device. Our results show that CleanOS limits sensitive-data exposure drastically while incurring acceptable overheads on mobile networks
