    An Experimental Digital Library Platform - A Demonstrator Prototype for the DigLib Project at SICS

    Within the framework of the Digital Library project at SICS, this thesis describes the implementation of a demonstrator prototype of a digital library (DigLib); an experimental platform integrating several functions in one common interface. It includes descriptions of the structure and formats of the digital library collection, the tailoring of the search engine Dienst, the construction of a keyword extraction tool, and the design and development of the interface. The platform was realised through sicsDAIS, an agent interaction and presentation system, and is to be used for testing and evaluating various tools for information seeking. The platform supports various user interaction strategies by providing: search in bibliographic records (Dienst); an index of keywords (the Keyword Extraction Function (KEF)); and browsing through the hierarchical structure of the collection. KEF was developed for this thesis work, and extracts and presents keywords from Swedish documents. Although based on a comparatively simple algorithm, KEF contributes by supplying a long-felt want in the area of Information Retrieval. Evaluations of the tasks and the interface still remain to be done, but the digital library is very much up and running. By implementing the platform through sicsDAIS, DigLib can deploy additional tools and search engines without interfering with already running modules. If wanted, agents providing other services than SICS can supply, can be plugged in

    The modern landscape of managing effects for the working programmer

    The management of side effects is a crucial aspect of modern programming, especially in concurrent and distributed systems. This thesis analyses different approaches for managing side effects in programming languages, specifically focusing on unrestricted side effects, monads, and algebraic effects and handlers. Unrestricted side effects, used in mainstream imperative programming languages, can make programs difficult to reason about. Monads offer a solution to this problem by describing side effects in a composable and referentially transparent way but many find them cumbersome to use. Algebraic effects and handlers can address some of the shortcomings of monads by providing a way to model effects in more modular and flexible way. The thesis discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each of these approaches and compares them based on factors such as expressiveness, safety, and constraints they place on how programs must be implemented. The thesis focuses on ZIO, a Scala library for concurrent and asynchronous programming, which revolves around a ZIO monad with three type parameters. With those three parameters ZIO can encode the majority of practically useful effects in a single monad. ZIO takes inspiration from algebraic effects, combining them with monadic effects. The library provides a range of features, such as declarative concurrency, error handling, and resource management. The thesis presents examples of using ZIO to manage side effects in practical scenarios, highlighting its strengths over other approaches. The applicability of ZIO is evaluated by implementing a server side application using ZIO, and analyzing observations from the development process

    Revisiting Actor Programming in C++

    The actor model of computation has gained significant popularity over the last decade. Its high level of abstraction makes it appealing for concurrent applications in parallel and distributed systems. However, designing a real-world actor framework that subsumes full scalability, strong reliability, and high resource efficiency requires many conceptual and algorithmic additives to the original model. In this paper, we report on designing and building CAF, the "C++ Actor Framework". CAF targets at providing a concurrent and distributed native environment for scaling up to very large, high-performance applications, and equally well down to small constrained systems. We present the key specifications and design concepts---in particular a message-transparent architecture, type-safe message interfaces, and pattern matching facilities---that make native actors a viable approach for many robust, elastic, and highly distributed developments. We demonstrate the feasibility of CAF in three scenarios: first for elastic, upscaling environments, second for including heterogeneous hardware like GPGPUs, and third for distributed runtime systems. Extensive performance evaluations indicate ideal runtime behaviour for up to 64 cores at very low memory footprint, or in the presence of GPUs. In these tests, CAF continuously outperforms the competing actor environments Erlang, Charm++, SalsaLite, Scala, ActorFoundry, and even the OpenMPI.Comment: 33 page

    Hybrid STM/HTM for nested transactions in Java

    Transactional memory (TM) has long been advocated as a promising pathway to more automated concurrency control for scaling concurrent programs running on parallel hardware. Software TM (STM) has the benefit of being able to run general transactional programs, but at the significant cost of overheads imposed to log memory accesses, mediate access conflicts, and maintain other transaction metadata. Recently, hardware manufacturers have begun to offer commodity hardware TM (HTM) support in their processors wherein the transaction metadata is maintained “for free” in hardware. However, HTM approaches are only best-effort: they cannot successfully run all transactional programs, whether because of hardware capacity issues (causing large transactions to fail), or compatibility restrictions on the processor instructions permitted within hardware transactions (causing transactions that execute those instructions to fail). In such cases, programs must include failure-handling code to attempt the computation by some other software means, since retrying the transaction would be futile. This dissertation describes the design and prototype implementation of a dialect of Java, XJ, that supports closed, open nested and boosted transactions. The design of XJ, allows natural expression of layered abstractions for concurrent data structures, while promoting improved concurrency for operations on those abstractions. We also describe how software and hardware schemes can combine seamlessly into a hybrid system in support of transactional programs, allowing use of low-cost HTM when it works, but reverting to STM when it doesn’t. We describe heuristics used to make this choice dynamically and automatically, but allowing the transition back to HTM opportunistically. Both schemes are compatible to allow different threads to run concurrently with either mechanism, while preserving transaction safety. Using a standard synthetic benchmark we demonstrate that HTM offers significant acceleration of both closed and open nested transactions, while yielding parallel scaling up to the limits of the hardware, whereupon scaling in software continues but with the penalty to throughput imposed by software mechanisms

They do not involve the low-level mutual exclusion mechanisms but rather their integration with and usage within higher-level constructs of the lan- guage. The paper reports acceleration of Hop, the Web pro- gramming language for which these optimizations have been created.     Building Web Based Programming Environments for Functional Programming

    Functional programming offers an accessible and powerful algebraic model for computing. JavaScript is the language of the ubiquitous Web, but it does not support functional programs well due to its single-threaded, asynchronous nature and lack of rich control flow operators. The purpose of this work is to extend JavaScript to a language environment that satisfies the needs of functional programs on the Web. This extended language environment uses sophisticated control operators to provide an event-driven functional programming model that cooperates with the browser\u27s DOM, along with synchronous access to JavaScript\u27s asynchronous APIs. The results of this work are used toward two projects: (1) a programming environment called WeScheme that runs in the web browser and supports a functional programming curriculum, and (2) a tool-chain called Moby that compiles event-driven functional programs to smartphones, with access to phone-specific features
