There is a lack of fundamental studies by means of state of the art numerical and scale modeling techniques scrutinizing the theoretical and technical aspect of air table separators as well as means to comprehend and improve the efficiency of the process. The dissertation details the development of a workable empirical model, a numerical model and a scale model to demonstrate the use of a laboratory air table unit. The modern air-based density separator achieves effective density-based separation for particle sizes greater than 6 mm. Parametric studies with the laboratory scale unit using low rank coal have demonstrated the applicability with regards to finer size fractions of the range 6 mm to 1 mm. The statistically significant empirical models showed that all the four parameters, i.e, blower and table frequency, longitudinal and transverse angle were significant in determining the separation performance. Furthermore, the tests show that an increase in the transverse angle increased the flow rate of solids to the product end and the introduction of feed results in the dampening of airflow at the feed end. The higher table frequency and feed rate had a detrimental effect on the product yield due to low residence time of particle settlement. The research further evaluated fine particle upgrading using various modeling techniques. The numerical model was evaluated using K-Epsilon and RSM turbulence formulations and validated using experimental dataset. The results prove that the effect of fine coal vortices forming around the riffles act as a transport mechanism for higher density particle movement across the table deck resulting in 43% displacement of the midlings and 29% displacement of the heavies to the product side. The velocity and vector plots show high local variance of air speeds and pressure near the feed end and an increase in feed rate results in a drop in deshaling capability of the table. The table was further evaluated using modern scale-modeling concepts and the scaling laws indicated that the vibration velocity has an integral effect on the separation performance. The difference between the full-scale model and the scaled prototype was 3.83% thus validating the scaling laws

    Engineered Wood Products for Construction

    Get PDF
Wood is a gift from nature. It is a sustainable and renewable bio-composite material that possesses a natural ability to mitigate carbon dioxide. However, due to deforestation and climate change, it has become necessary to develop alternative building and construction materials. Engineered wood products (EWPs) such as parallel strand lumber, laminated veneer lumber, and cross-laminated timber are promising substitutions for conventional lumber products. This book presents a comprehensive overview of EWPs, including information on their classification, design, synthesis, properties, and more. It is divided into two sections: “General Overviews and Applications of EWPs” and “Recent Research and Development of EWPs”. The book is a valuable reference for manufacturers, engineers, architects, builders, researchers, and students in the field of construction

THE USE OF POINT CLOUD DATA TO SUPPORT CONCRETE BRIDGE DECK CONDITION ASSESSMENT

    Get PDF
Bridge deck condition assessments are typically conducted through visual physical inspections, utilizing traditional contact sensors for Non-Destructive Evaluation techniques such as hammer Sounding and chain dragging which require the expertise of trained inspectors. However, the accuracy of these inspections is limited by the level of deterioration of the bridge deck, as the ability of the inspectors is proportional to the apparent level of damage. This study aims to improve the accuracy of bridge deck inspection processes by utilizing non-destructive evaluation techniques, including the analysis of point cloud data gathered via Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) as a geometry-capturing tool. The overall goal of this research is to evaluate and quantify the effectiveness and efficiency of LiDAR sensors in contributing to the suite of technologies available to perform bridge deck condition assessment. To achieve this, the research proposes to understand the deterioration pattern of New Jersey bridges, evaluate the results gathered from point cloud data collected on a full-scale bridge deck, quantify the information gained from deploying LiDAR on operating bridges in New Jersey, and investigate the costs related to current bridge condition assessment practices and the impact of incorporating the use of LiDAR sensors. Two data processing approaches were chosen to measure gross and fine dimensions of the evaluated bridge decks, resulting in an accuracy of 96% with respect to results gathered from inspection reports

    Get PDF
Composite materials are used to produce multi-objective structures such as fluid reservoirs, transmission pipes, heat exchangers, pressure vessels due to high strength and stiffness to density ratios and improved corrosion resistance. The mathematical concepts can be used to simulate and analyze the generated mechanical and thermal properties of composite materials regarding to the desired performances in actual working conditions.  To solve and obtain the exact solution of the developed nonlinear differential equations in the composite materials, analytical methods can be applied. Mechanical and thermal analysis of complex composite structures can be numerically analyzed using the Finite Element Method (FEM) to increase performances of composite structures in different working conditions. To decrease failure rate and increase performances of composite structures under complex loading system, thermal stress and effects of static and dynamic loads on the designed shapes of composite structures can be analytically investigated. The stresses and deformation of the composite materials under the complex applied loads can be calculated by using the FEM method in order to be used in terms of safety enhancement of composite structures. To increase the safety level as well as performances of the composite structures in different working conditions, crack development in elastic composites can be simulated and analyzed. To develop and optimize the process of composite deigning in terms of mechanical as well as thermal properties under different mechanical and thermal loading conditions, the advanced machine learning systems can be applied. A review in recent development of composite materials and structures is presented in the study and future research works are also suggested. Thus, to increase performances of composite materials and structures under complex loading systems, advanced methodology of composite designing and modification procedures can be provided by reviewing and assessing recent achievements in the published papers
