A new area of research involves the use of Google data, which has been normalized and scaled to predict economic activity. This new source of data holds both many advantages as well as disadvantages, which are discussed through the use of daily and weekly data. Daily and weekly data are employed to show the effect of aggregation as it pertains to Google data, which can lead to contradictory findings. In this paper, Poisson regressions are used to explore the relationship between the online traffic to a specific website and the search volumes for certain keyword search queries, along with the rankings of that specific website for those queries. On multidimensional indices of poverty

There has been a growing interest in what have come to be termed"multidimensional indices of poverty."Advocates for these new indices correctly point out that command over market goods is not all that matters to peoples'well-being, and that other factors need to be considered when quantifying the extent of poverty and informing policy making for fighting poverty. However, the author argues that there are two poorly understood issues in assessing these indices. First, does one believe that any single index can ever be a sufficient statistic for poverty assessments? Second, when aggregation is called for, should it be done in the space of"attainments,"using prices when appropriate, or that of"deprivations,"using weights set by the analyst? The paper argues that the goal for future poverty monitoring efforts should be to develop a credible set of multiple indices, spanning the dimensions of poverty most relevant to a specific setting, rather than a single multidimensional index. When weights are needed, they shouldn't be set solely by an analyst measuring poverty. New Estimates of the Index of Economic Well-being for Canada and the Provinces, 1981 - 2008

This report presents new estimates of the Index of Economic Well-being (IEWB) and its four domains (consumption flows, stocks of wealth, economic equality and economic security) for Canada and the provinces for the 1981-2008 period. It finds that the IEWB advanced at a 1.20 per cent average annual growth rate over the period, below the 1.58 per cent growth for GDP per capita. Both the consumption and wealth domains experienced solid advances over the period, but these developments were offset by declines in the equality and economic security domains. Stochastic Growth Equations and Reparametrization Invariance

It is shown that, by imposing reparametrization invariance, one may derive a variety of stochastic equations describing the dynamics of surface growth and identify the physical processes responsible for the various terms. This approach provides a particularly transparent way to obtain continuum growth equations for interfaces. It is straightforward to derive equations which describe the coarse grained evolution of discrete lattice models and analyze their small gradient expansion. In this way, the authors identify the basic mechanisms which lead to the most commonly used growth equations. The advantages of this formulation of growth processes is that it allows one to go beyond the frequently used no-overhang approximation. The reparametrization invariant form also displays explicitly the conservation laws for the specific process and all the symmetries with respect to space-time transformations which are usually lost in the small gradient expansion. Finally, it is observed, that the knowledge of the full equation of motion, beyond the lowest order gradient expansion, might be relevant in problems where the usual perturbative renormalization methods fail.Comment: 42 pages, Revtex, no figures. Review of HDI Critiques and Potential Improvements

This paper reviews critiques of the Human Development Report over the last twenty years. The critiques are mostly related to the choice of indicators, to high correlation of HDI components, functional form of the HDI including normalization of component indicators, aggregation vs. multiplication, and issues related to weighting.
