    Automatic application object migration in sensor networks

    Object migration in wireless sensor networks has the potential to reduce energy consumption for a wireless sensor network mesh. Automated migration reduces the need for the programmer to perform manual static analysis to find an efficient layout solution. Instead, the system can self-optimise and adjust to changing conditions. This paper describes an automated, transparent object migration system for wireless sensor networks, implemented on a micro Java virtual machine. The migration system moves objects at runtime around the sensor mesh to reduce communication overheads. The movement of objects is transparent to the application developer. Automated transparent object migration is a core component of Hydra, a distributed operating system for wireless sensor networks that is currently under development. Performance of the system under a complex performance test scenario using a real-world dataset of seismic events is described. The results show that under both simple and complex conditions the migration technique can result in lower data traffic and consequently lower overall energy cost

    Programmability and Performance of Parallel ECS-based Simulation of Multi-Agent Exploration Models

    While the traditional objective of parallel/distributed simulation techniques has been mainly in improving performance and making very large models tractable, more recent research trends targeted complementary aspects, such as the “ease of programming”. Along this line, a recent proposal called Event and Cross State (ECS) synchronization, stands as a solution allowing to break the traditional programming rules proper of Parallel Discrete Event Simulation (PDES) systems, where the application code processing a specific event is only allowed to access the state (namely the memory image) of the target simulation object. In fact with ECS, the programmer is allowed to write ANSI-C event-handlers capable of accessing (in either read or write mode) the state of whichever simulation object included in the simulation model. Correct concurrent execution of events, e.g., on top of multi-core machines, is guaranteed by ECS with no intervention by the programmer, who is in practice exposed to a sequential-style programming model where events are processed one at a time, and have the ability to access the current memory image of the whole simulation model, namely the collection of the states of any involved object. This can strongly simplify the development of specific models, e.g., by avoiding the need for passing state information across concurrent objects in the form of events.     Cache-aware Parallel Programming for Manycore Processors

    With rapidly evolving technology, multicore and manycore processors have emerged as promising architectures to benefit from increasing transistor numbers. The transition towards these parallel architectures makes today an exciting time to investigate challenges in parallel computing. The TILEPro64 is a manycore accelerator, composed of 64 tiles interconnected via multiple 8x8 mesh networks. It contains per-tile caches and supports cache-coherent shared memory by default. In this paper we present a programming technique to take advantages of distributed caching facilities in manycore processors. However, unlike other work in this area, our approach does not use architecture-specific libraries. Instead, we provide the programmer with a novel technique on how to program future Non-Uniform Cache Architecture (NUCA) manycore systems, bearing in mind their caching organisation.     Transparent multi-core speculative parallelization of DES models with event and cross-state dependencies

    In this article we tackle transparent parallelization of Discrete Event Simulation (DES) models to be run on top of multi-core machines according to speculative schemes. The innovation in our proposal lies in that we consider a more general programming and execution model, compared to the one targeted by state of the art PDES platforms, where the boundaries of the state portion accessible while processing an event at a specific simulation object do not limit access to the actual object state, or to shared global variables. Rather, the simulation object is allowed to access (and alter) the state of any other object, thus causing what we term cross-state dependency. We note that this model exactly complies with typical (easy to manage) sequential-style DES programming, where a (dynamically-allocated) state portion of object A can be accessed by object B in either read or write mode (or both) by, e.g., passing a pointer to B as the payload of a scheduled simulation event. However, while read/write memory accesses performed in the sequential run are always guaranteed to observe (and to give rise to) a consistent snapshot of the state of the simulation model, consistency is not automatically guaranteed in case of parallelization and concurrent execution of simulation objects with cross-state dependencies. We cope with such a consistency issue, and its application-transparent support, in the context of parallel and optimistic executions. This is achieved by introducing an advanced memory management architecture, able to efficiently detect read/write accesses by concurrent objects to whichever object state in an application transparent manner, together with advanced synchronization mechanisms providing the advantage of exploiting parallelism in the underlying multi-core architecture while transparently handling both cross-state and traditional event-based dependencies. Our proposal targets Linux and has been integrated with the ROOT-Sim open source optimistic simulation platform, although its design principles, and most parts of the developed software, are of general relevance.     Transparent Orchestration of Task-based Parallel Applications in Containers Platforms

    This paper presents a framework to easily build and execute parallel applications in container-based distributed computing platforms in a user-transparent way. The proposed framework is a combination of the COMP Superscalar (COMPSs) programming model and runtime, which provides a straightforward way to develop task-based parallel applications from sequential codes, and containers management platforms that ease the deployment of applications in computing environments (as Docker, Mesos or Singularity). This framework provides scientists and developers with an easy way to implement parallel distributed applications and deploy them in a one-click fashion. We have built a prototype which integrates COMPSs with different containers engines in different scenarios: i) a Docker cluster, ii) a Mesos cluster, and iii) Singularity in an HPC cluster. We have evaluated the overhead in the building phase, deployment and execution of two benchmark applications compared to a Cloud testbed based on KVM and OpenStack and to the usage of bare metal nodes. We have observed an important gain in comparison to cloud environments during the building and deployment phases. This enables better adaptation of resources with respect to the computational load.     Creating a Distributed Programming System Using the DSS: A Case Study of OzDSS

    This technical report describes the integration of the Distribution Subsystem (DSS) to the programming system Mozart. The result, OzDSS, is described in detail. Essential when coupling a programming system to the DSS is how the internal model of threads and language entities are mapped to the abstract entities of the DSS. The model of threads and language entities of Mozart is described at a detailed level to explain the design choices made when developing the code that couples the DSS to Mozart. To show the challenges associated with different thread implementations, the C++DSS system is introduced. C++DSS is a C++ library which uses the DSS to implement different types of distributed language entities in the form of C++ classes. Mozart emulates threads, thus there is no risk of multiple threads accessing the DSS simultaneously. C++DSS, on the other hand, makes use of POSIX threads, thus simultaneous access to the DSS from multiple POSIX threads can happen. The fundamental differences in how threads are treated in a system that emulates threads (Mozart) to a system that make use of native-threads~(C++DSS) is discussed. The paper is concluded by a performance comparison between the OzDSS system and other distributed programming systems. We see that the OzDSS system outperforms ``industry grade'' Java-RMI and Java-CORBA implementations
