Vector space framework for unification of one- and multidimensional filter bank theory

A number of results in filter bank theory can be viewed using vector space notations. This simplifies the proofs of many important results. In this paper, we first introduce the framework of vector space, and then use this framework to derive some known and some new filter bank results as well. For example, the relation among the Hermitian image property, orthonormality, and the perfect reconstruction (PR) property is well-known for the case of one-dimensional (1-D) analysis/synthesis filter banks. We can prove the same result in a more general vector space setting. This vector space framework has the advantage that even the most general filter banks, namely, multidimensional nonuniform filter banks with rational decimation matrices, become a special case. Many results in 1-D filter bank theory are hence extended to the multidimensional case, with some algebraic manipulations of integer matrices. Some examples are: the equivalence of biorthonormality and the PR property, the interchangeability of analysis and synthesis filters, the connection between analysis/synthesis filter banks and synthesis/analysis transmultiplexers, etc. Furthermore, we obtain the subband convolution scheme by starting from the generalized Parseval's relation in vector space. Several theoretical results of wavelet transform can also be derived using this framework. In particular, we derive the wavelet convolution theorem

Weyl-Heisenberg Spaces for Robust Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing

Design of Weyl-Heisenberg sets of waveforms for robust orthogonal frequency division multiplex- ing (OFDM) has been the subject of a considerable volume of work. In this paper, a complete parameterization of orthogonal Weyl-Heisenberg sets and their corresponding biorthogonal sets is given. Several examples of Weyl-Heisenberg sets designed using this parameterization are pre- sented, which in simulations show a high potential for enabling OFDM robust to frequency offset, timing mismatch, and narrow-band interference

Multirate digital filters, filter banks, polyphase networks, and applications: a tutorial

Multirate digital filters and filter banks find application in communications, speech processing, image compression, antenna systems, analog voice privacy systems, and in the digital audio industry. During the last several years there has been substantial progress in multirate system research. This includes design of decimation and interpolation filters, analysis/synthesis filter banks (also called quadrature mirror filters, or QMFJ, and the development of new sampling theorems. First, the basic concepts and building blocks in multirate digital signal processing (DSPJ, including the digital polyphase representation, are reviewed. Next, recent progress as reported by several authors in this area is discussed. Several applications are described, including the following: subband coding of waveforms, voice privacy systems, integral and fractional sampling rate conversion (such as in digital audio), digital crossover networks, and multirate coding of narrow-band filter coefficients. The M-band QMF bank is discussed in considerable detail, including an analysis of various errors and imperfections. Recent techniques for perfect signal reconstruction in such systems are reviewed. The connection between QMF banks and other related topics, such as block digital filtering and periodically time-varying systems, based on a pseudo-circulant matrix framework, is covered. Unconventional applications of the polyphase concept are discussed
