    A genetic algorithm for the design of a fuzzy controller for active queue management

    Active queue management (AQM) policies are those policies of router queue management that allow for the detection of network congestion, the notification of such occurrences to the hosts on the network borders, and the adoption of a suitable control policy. This paper proposes the adoption of a fuzzy proportional integral (FPI) controller as an active queue manager for Internet routers. The analytical design of the proposed FPI controller is carried out in analogy with a proportional integral (PI) controller, which recently has been proposed for AQM. A genetic algorithm is proposed for tuning of the FPI controller parameters with respect to optimal disturbance rejection. In the paper the FPI controller design metodology is described and the results of the comparison with random early detection (RED), tail drop, and PI controller are presented

In this paper we argue that network parameters that define the network Quality of Service (QoS) must be driven by user-centric parameters such as user expectations and requirements for multimedia transmitted over a network. To this end a mechanism for mapping user-oriented parameters to network QoS parameters is outlined. The paper surveys existing methods for mapping user requirements to the network. An adaptable communication system is implemented to validate the mapping. The architecture adapts to varying network conditions caused by congestion so as to maintain user expectations and requirements. The paper also surveys research in the area of adaptable communications architectures and protocols. Our results show that such a user-biased approach to networking does bring tangible benefits to the user

    Quality of service management for non-guaranteed networks

    The increasing dominance of multimedia communication posed new requirements for the underlying systems. Multimedia data, formally called continuous media, has time constraints that impose real time limitations for their transmission. Certain levels of service, called Quality of Service (QoS), need to be considered when handling continuous media. The present work utilizes QoS concepts for networks that do not have inherent QoS support. The thesis aims at verifying the possibility of having QoS-controlled communication on non-guaranteed networks. A basic QoS architecture is designed where already existing QoS concepts are adapted to work with non-guaranteed networks. The architecture provides the facilities of QoS specification, mapping, admission, maintenance, monitoring and notification. In addition, a new concept for predictive QoS admission is introduced. The proposed architecture was verified using a prototype system. The results showed an increased percentage of continuous media that arrive on time to their receivers (good put) with higher network loads. The increased good put was at the expense of high network overhead

    An intelligent approach to quality of service for MPEG-4 video transmission in IEEE 802.15.1

    Nowadays, wireless connectivity is becoming ubiquitous spreading to companies and in domestic areas. IEEE 802.15.1 commonly known as Bluetooth is high-quality, high-security, high-speed and low-cost radio signal technology. This wireless technology allows a maximum access range of 100 meters yet needs power as low as 1mW. Regrettably, IEEE 802.15.1 has a very limited bandwidth. This limitation can become a real problem If the user wishes to transmit a large amount of data in a very short time. The version 1.2 which is used in this project could only carry a maximum download rate of 724Kbps and an upload rate of 54Kbps In its asynchronous mode. But video needs a very large bandwidth to be transmitted with a sufficient level of quality. Video transmission over IEEE 802.15.1 networks would therefore be difficult to achieve, due to the limited bandwidth. Hence, a solution to transmit digital video with a sufficient quality of picture to arrive at the receiving end is required. A hybrid scheme has been developed in this thesis, comprises of a fuzzy logic set of rules and an artificial neural network algorithms. MPEG-4 video compression has been used in this work to optimise the transmission. This research further utilises an ‘added-buffer’ to prevent excessive data loss of MPEG-4 video over IEEE 802.15.1transmission and subsequently increase picture quality. The neural-fuzzy scheme regulates the output rate of the added-buffer to ensure that MPEG-4 video stream conforms to the traffic conditions of the IEEE 802.15.1 channel during the transmission period, that is to send more data when the bandwidth is not fully used and keep the data in the buffers if the bandwidth is overused. Computer simulation results confirm that intelligence techniques and added-buffer do improve quality of picture, reduce data loss and communication delay, as compared with conventional MPEG video transmission over IEEE 802.15.1

    Quality of Service (QoS) in Internet Protocol (IF) Networks has been the subject of active research over the past two decades. Integrated Services (IntServ) and Differentiated Services (DiffServ) QoS architectures have emerged as proposed standards for resource allocation in IF Networks. These two QoS architectures support the need for multiple traffic queuing systems to allow for resource partitioning for heterogeneous applications making use of the networks. There have been a number of specifications or proposals for the number of traffic queuing classes (Class of Service (CoS)) that will support integrated services in IF Networks, but none has provided verification in the form of analytical or empirical investigation to prove that its specification or proposal will be optimum. Despite the existence of the two standard QoS architectures and the large volume of research work that has been carried out on IF QoS, its deployment still remains elusive in the Internet.     Network-based business process management: embedding business logic in communications networks

    Advanced Business Process Management (BPM) tools enable the decomposition of previously integrated and often ill-defined processes into re-usable process modules. These process modules can subsequently be distributed on the Internet over a variety of many different actors, each with their own specialization and economies-of-scale. The economic benefits of process specialization can be huge. However, how should such actors in a business network find, select, and control, the best partner for what part of the business process, in such a way that the best result is achieved? This particular management challenge requires more advanced techniques and tools in the enabling communications networks. An approach has been developed to embed business logic into the communications networks in order to optimize the allocation of business resources from a network point of view.
