    Development of a Variable Roller Pump and Evaluation of its Power Saving Potential as a Charge Pump in Hydrostatic Drivetrains

    Predložená doktorandská dizertačná práca (ďalej len práca) sa zaoberá rozsiahlou analýzou valčekového hydrogenerátora s premenlivým geometrickým objemom a predikciou výkonových úspor dosiahnutých aplikáciou navrhnutého valčekového hydrogenerátora s premenlivým geometrickým objemom v hydrostatickom pohone vybraných mobilných pracovných strojov. Teoretický rozbor princípov fungovania valčekového hydrogenerátora a teória jednorozmerného simulačného modelu sú popísané v prvej časti práce. Na základe odvodenej teórie je vytvorený simulačný model, ktorý je vhodný na predikciu priebehu tlaku v komorách valčekového hydrogenerátora, síl pôsobiacich na valček a na predikciu vnútorných únikov vzniknutých skratovaním rozvodovej dosky, ktoré majú priamy vplyv na objemovú účinnosť valčekového hydrogenerátora. Simulačný model bol úspešne použitý pre optimalizáciu rozvodových dosiek valčekového hydrogenerátora a vhodnosť simulačného modelu potvrdili následné merania Práca obsahuje aj analýzu síl pôsobiacich na vodiaci prstenec, ktorej výsledky boli taktiež potvrdené meraním. Analýza týchto síl môže vylepšiť v konečnom dôsledku parametre budúcich tlakových regulácii. Práca ďalej obsahuje základné porovnanie použitých tlakových regulácii. Všetky uskutočnené merania potvrdili, že valčekový hydrogenerátor s premenlivým geometrickým objemom s testovanými tlakovými reguláciami je schopný úspešne pracovať v hydrostatickej prevodovke. Druhá časť práce analyzuje potenciál výkonových úspor valčekového hydrogenerátora s premenlivým geometrickým objemom pre dve mobilné aplikácie - teleskopický nakladač s hmotnosťou 9 ton a kombajn s hmotnosťou 20 ton. Analýza vyžaduje jednorozmerný simulačný model hydrostatického pohonu s teplotnou predikciou hydrostatickej prevodovky. Dva rozdielne koncepty variabilného doplňovacieho systému hydrostatickej prevodovky sú porovnané so štandardným doplňovacím systémom pre pracovný a transportný režim oboch vybraných typov vozidiel. Simulácia pohonu vozidla s valčekovým hydrogenerátorom s premenlivým geometrickým objemom vo funkcii doplňovacieho hydrogenerátora a obtokovou clonou potvrdili vyššie úspory iba v prípadoch, kedy rýchlosť doplňovacieho hydrogenerátora bola výrazne vyššia a prietok cez obtokovú clonu do skrine hlavného hydrogenerátora zabezpečil dostatočné chladenie. Najvyššie výkonové úspory boli dosiahnuté s premenlivým preplachovacím systémom, ktorého prietok sa menil podľa požiadaviek hydrostatickej prevodovky. Záver druhej časti práce sa zaoberá metodikou dimenzovania veľkosti doplňovacieho hydrogenerátora.Presented doctoral thesis deals with an extensive hydraulic variable roller pump analysis and the power saving prediction of hydrostatic drivetrains in the mobile machines achieved with a variable roller charge pump implementation. At the first part of the work, the roller pump functionality was described and the theory of a 1-D simulation model was developed. Based on this developed simulation model is suitable for pressure profile prediction, roller force prediction and cross port leakage prediction which has a direct impact on the total volumetric efficiency. The simulation model was successfully used as a tool for optimization of the port plates, which was confirmed by measurements. The first part of the work includes the pump control force analysis validated by measurements and also the basic pressure compensator controls comparison. Developed control force prediction could help to improve the control performance. The measurements confirmed that the variable roller charge pump is able to successfully work in transmissions with measured types of the control. The second part of the work analyzed the power saving potential of a variable charge pump for two selected typical mobile applications: telehandler (9 ton) and combine harvester (20 ton). This part required a 1-D drivetrain simulation model together with thermal behaviour of the hydrostatic transmission. Two different modifications of the charging systems were compared with the conventional charging system in simulations performed for the working and transporting mode. The drivetrain simulation of the variable roller charge pump with a bypass orifice confirms higher power savings only in cases when the pump speed was significantly higher than normal speeds and a relatively constant flushing flow through the bypass orifice to the pump case still ensures suitable cooling. The highest power savings were achieved with variable flushing flows, where the demand for charging flow was adjusted according to the hydrostatic transmission cooling requirements. At the end of the second part, this thesis deals with a variable charge pump sizing.

It demonstrates – by dealing with their origins and key milestones in their history and development – the important role that inspections play in terms of the functional nature of the gears concerned. This comprehensive consideration of the subject also attempts to demonstrate how the lack of clear guidelines and standards designed to unify the criteria applied to testing, the interpretation of results and calibration of equipment, along with the number of simultaneous variables involved in trials of this type, leads to doubts (including with respect to the actual standards concerned) as to whether these tests are valid, or instead accepted only has partial validations.     Planetary transmission load sharing: Manufacturing errors and system configuration study

    This paper addresses the effect of manufacturing errors such as eccentricity and planet pin positioning errors on the quasi-static behavior of a 3 planet planetary transmission, taking into account different configurations regarding the bearing condition of the sun gear shaft. The aim of the paper is to shed light on some untouched aspects of the load sharing behavior of planetary transmissions, such as the effect of radial positioning errors of the planets when different pressure angles are used, and the impact of the different loadings per planet on the actual load per tooth. A modeling approach is employed, and physical explanations and simplified graphs are provided to help understand the behavior of the transmission when the sun is allowed to float and errors are introduced. The model used, developed by the authors and presented and validated in previous works, hybridizes analytical solutions with finite element models in order to compute the contact forces. The results obtained show that the teeth loads are much lower than expected compared to the planet uneven loads, both in the non-defected and defected transmission, and that radial positioning errors have non-negligible effect on the load sharing ratio under certain operating conditions.The authors would like to acknowledge Project DPI2013-44860 funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology for supporting this research

    Static analysis of dynamic servo tool rest considering the influence of precision error

    The analysis of the reliability of dynamic servo tool rest using traditional methods is inaccurate because the influences of the accuracy of gear machining and assembly are not considered. In this study, a static analysis method for dynamic servo tool rest is conducted considering the influence of accuracy error. Firstly, the working principle of tool rest is analysed, and its working process is divided into two actions, namely, initial positioning and locking. Secondly, the error sources of dynamic servo tool rest are investigated, and the transmission angle error is divided into two kinds, namely, assembly error of shafting and machining error of gear. The static analysis of tool rest is performed by considering the influence of the transmission error of the tool rest. Results show that the assembly, machining and locking forces of the fixed tooth disc of the dynamic servo tool rest have important effects

    On the modelling of spur and helical gear dynamic behaviour

    This chapter is aimed at introducing the fundamentals of spur and helical gear dynamics. Using three-dimensional lumped models and a thin-slice approach for mesh elasticity, the general equations of motion for single-stage spur or helical gears are presented. Some particular cases including the classic one degree-of-freedom model are examined in order to introduce and illustrate the basic phenomena. The interest of the concept of transmission errors is analysed and a number of practical considerations are deduced. Emphasis is deliberately placed on analytical results which, although approximate, allow a clearer understanding of gear dynamics than that provided by extensive numerical simulations. Some extensions towards continuous models are presented

    Influence of the Nonlinear Dynamic Behavior of Journal Bearings on Gear-Bearing Assemblies

    International audienceJournal bearings cannot be considered as passive elements in gear-bearing assemblies, and the lubricant is recognized as playing an important role in the interactions between the shafts and the bearings. In order to take this influence into account, bearings are usually modeled by means of eight dynamic coefficients, i.e., asymmetric stiffness and damping matrices. In this paper, a nonlinear approach is proposed enabling the behavior of a gear-shaft-bearing assembly to be analyzed. A discrete finite element model is used for the shafts, and a specific gear element is introduced which accounts for non-linear time-varying mesh stiffness as well as tooth shape deviations. The meshing forces are internal system forces whereas the effects of the bearings on the shafts are taken to be external. A combination of the Newmark time integration scheme and the Newton-Raphson algorithm is used to simultaneously solve the contact problem for the gear, and the Reynolds equations for the bearings. The resulting algorithm is applied to a single stage geared system with two shafts, four bearings, a pinion and a gear while taking mass unbalance, eccentricity and meshing excitations into account. Several examples are presented which demonstrate the influence of bearing nonlinearity and the efficiency of the proposed model and numerical procedure

    Electrical Signature Analysis of Synchronous Motors Under Some Mechanical Anomalies

    Electrical Signature Analysis (ESA) has been introduced for some time to investigate the electrical anomalies of electric machines, especially for induction motors. More recently hints of using such an approach to analyze mechanical anomalies have appeared in the literature. Among them, some articles cover synchronous motors usually being employed to improve the power factor, drive green vehicles and reciprocating compressors or pumps with higher efficiency. Similarly with induction motors, the common mechanical anomalies of synchronous motor being analyzed using the ESA are air-gap eccentricity and single point bearing defects. However torsional effects, which are usually induced by torsional vibration of rotors and by generalized roughness bearing defects, have seldom been investigated using the ESA. This work presents an analytical method for ESA of rotor torsional vibration and an experimentally demonstrated approach for ESA of generalized roughness bearing defects. The torsional vibration of a shaft assembly usually induces rotor speed fluctuations resulting from the excitations in the electromagnetic (EM) or load torque. Actually, there is strong coupling within the system which is dynamically dependent on the interactions between the electromagnetic air-gap torque of the synchronous machine and the rotordynamics of the rotor shaft assembly. Typically this problem is solved as a one-way coupling by the unidirectional load transfer method, which is based on predetermined or assumed EM or load profile. It ignores the two-way interactions, especially during a start-up transient. In this work, a coupled equivalent circuit method is applied to reflect this coupling, and the simulation results show the significance of the proposed method by the practical case study of Electric Submersible Pump (ESP) system. The generalized roughness bearing anomaly is linked to load torque ripples which can cause speed oscillations, while being related to current signature by phase modulation. Considering that the induced characteristic signature is usually subtle broadband changes in the current spectrum, this signature is easily affected by input power quality variations, machine manufacturing imperfections and the interaction of both. A signal segmentation technique is introduced to isolate the influence of these disturbances and improve the effectiveness of applying the ESA for this kind of bearing defects. Furthermore, an improved experimental procedure is employed to closely resemble naturally occurring degradation of bearing, while isolating the influence of shaft currents on the signature of bearing defects during the experiments. The results show that the proposed method is effective in analyzing the generalized roughness bearing anomaly in synchronous motors

    An Assessment on the Non-Invasive Methods for Condition Monitoring of Induction Motors

    The ability to forecast motor mechanical faults at incipient stages is vital to reducing maintenance costs, operation downtime and safety hazards. This paper synthesized the progress in the research and development in condition monitoring and fault diagnosis of induction motors. The motor condition monitoring techniques are mainly classified into two categories that are invasive and non-invasive techniques. The invasive techniques are very basic, but they have some implementation difficulties and high cost. The non-invasive methods, namely MCSA, PVA and IPA, overcome the disadvantages associated to invasive methods. This book chapter reviews the various non-invasive condition monitoring methods for diagnosis of mechanical faults in induction motor and concludes that the instantaneous power analysis (IPA) and Park vector analysis (PVA) methods are best suitable for the diagnosis of small fault signatures associated to mechanical faults. Recommendations for the future research in these areas are also presented

    Nonlinear dynamic analysis of a coupled lateral-torsional spur gear with eccentricity

    In this study, the dynamic behaviors of gear system are systematically analyzed with coupled lateral-torsional vibration caused by the gear meshing. A 4-degree-of-freedom (DOF) lumped parameter dynamic model for a spur gear, considering gravity, backlash, eccentricity, transmission errors, external excitation, is proposed. Parametric studies are performed to understand the influence of key parameters such as rotational speed ω, backlash b and error fluctuation er on the nonlinear dynamic behavior. The frequency response characteristics of spur gear system show that lateral resonance frequency and torsional resonance frequency simultaneously exhibit in lateral direction. In addition, other nonlinear phenomena including various forms of periodic, quasi-periodic and chaotic vibrations are analyzed. The results show that the nonlinear dynamical behaviors such jump discontinuous phenomena, single-sided impact and double-sided impact are strongly attributed to interaction between backlash, eccentricity and error fluctuant amplitude. Significantly, the appropriate rotational speed and decrease error fluctuant amplitude could effectively control the nonlinear vibration. Whereas the backlash has a complicated effect on the nonlinear dynamical characteristics. The results presented in this paper show that an analysis of the coupled lateral-torsional vibration (CLTV) of the spur transmission gear system. Some research results presented in this paper are useful to dynamic design and vibration control of spur gear transmission system
