Computing is a critical driving force in the development of human civilization. In recent years, we have witnessed the emergence of intelligent computing, a new computing paradigm that is reshaping traditional computing and promoting digital revolution in the era of big data, artificial intelligence and internet-of-things with new computing theories, architectures, methods, systems, and applications. Intelligent computing has greatly broadened the scope of computing, extending it from traditional computing on data to increasingly diverse computing paradigms such as perceptual intelligence, cognitive intelligence, autonomous intelligence, and human computer fusion intelligence. Intelligence and computing have undergone paths of different evolution and development for a long time but have become increasingly intertwined in recent years: intelligent computing is not only intelligence-oriented but also intelligence-driven. Designing a collaborative AutoML tool to help organizations become data-driven

(AutoML) techniques. While the AutoML technology develops further and further and provides
increasingly robust and interesting results, there is only little to no current research on how this
technology can be adopted and scaled across different functions and teams of any organization.
Thus, this study raises the research question of how an information system that leverages AutoML
techniques can empower organizations and their non-technical individuals to collaborate on and
adopt machine learning techniques in their daily lives to unlock the value of available data. To gain a
clear analytical lens, this study is conducted in the environment of Management Consulting
Companies (MCCs) as they span all industries and multiple tasks within diverse organizations and
therefore promise a good transfer of knowledge to other application areas. A special emphasis is
given to non-technical users and the possibilities of them participating in such a system as that has
the potential to reach a large number of real-world practitioners. The identified problem is tackled
with a Design Science Research (DSR) approach. A workflow of how an information system can
support its users to leverage AutoML serves as an artifact that is evaluated by experts. Learnings
from the theory behind the proposal and its evaluation contribute to literature around AutoML and
the transformation of the MCC industry as well as practical applications in both fields. Results suggest
that AutoML is best used to conduct quick experiments and find out which applications have the
highest business value before involving experts. Major challenges are to help non-technical users
define a use case and prepare data
Resilient SMEs and entrepreneurs: evidence from the UK craft brewing sector
Abstract Purpose The paper examines the sudden changes and challenges experienced by British craft breweries because of COVID-19. The purpose is twofold; firstly, to evaluate the overall growth trajectory of the craft brewing sector prior to the pandemic crisis and, secondly, to identify features of resilience and adaptability that aided business survival. Design/methodology/approach The authors conducted 24 interviews with a sample of craft brewers during 2020, supplemented with a focus group later in 2021, to understand the impacts of COVID-19 on their businesses. Inductive thematic analysis followed a flexible six-stage approach to generating codes. Qualitative findings were set in the context of the pre-COVID-19 industry trends which were analysed using panel data from the Society of Independent Brewers' (SIBA) Annual Surveys between 2015 and 2018. Findings Findings from the analysis reveal a range of factors influencing growth in the UK craft beer sector before the pandemic crisis, such as levels of investment and local network ties, and identify a range of strategies implemented by brewers in response to the crisis, including new packaging and supply channels, more intensive marketing and greater online engagement with customers. Analysis of the intersection between aspects of individual and organisational resilience also revealed that dynamic responses to an external crisis depend on individual resilience characteristics before organisational strategies can be developed. Originality/value The study provides fresh empirical evidence to practitioners and policymakers to help forecast and future-proof the UK craft beer sector, as well as elucidating aspects of resilience that apply to SMEs in the global industry who face similar challenges. Moving towards a post-COVID-19 economy, the paper offers important theoretical insights into how the resilience of breweries, and other SMEs, is shaped by complex interdependencies and networks and how their adaptive responses might strengthen future business models
Inclusive Intelligent Learning Management System Framework - Application of Data Science in Inclusive Education
Dissertation presented as the partial requirement for obtaining a Master's degree in Data Science and Advanced Analytics, specialization in Data ScienceBeing a disabled student the author faced higher education with a handicap which as experience
studying during COVID 19 confinement periods matched the findings in recent research about the
importance of digital accessibility through more e-learning intensive academic experiences. Narrative
and systematic literature reviews enabled providing context in World Health Organization’s
International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health, legal and standards framework and
information technology and communication state-of-the art. Assessing Portuguese higher education
institutions’ web sites alerted to the fact that only outlying institutions implemented near perfect,
accessibility-wise, websites.
Therefore a gap was identified in how accessible the Portuguese higher education websites are, the
needs of all students, including those with disabilities, and even the accessibility minimum legal
requirements for digital products and the services provided by public or publicly funded organizations.
Having identified a problem in society and exploring the scientific base of knowledge for context and
state of the art was a first stage in the Design Science Research methodology, to which followed
development and validation cycles of an Inclusive Intelligent Learning Management System
Framework. The framework blends various Data Science study fields contributions with accessibility
guidelines compliant interface design and content upload accessibility compliance assessment.
Validation was provided by a focus group whose inputs were considered for the version presented in
this dissertation. Not being the purpose of the research to deliver a complete implementation of the
framework and lacking consistent data to put all the modules interacting with each other, the most
relevant modules were tested with open data as proof of concept.
The rigor cycle of DSR started with the inclusion of the previous thesis on Atlântica University Institute
Scientific Repository and is to be completed with the publication of this thesis and the already started
PhD’s findings in relevant journals and conferences

É com grande prazer que apresentamos a mais recente edição (a 11.ª) do Anuário Científico da Escola Superior de Tecnologia da Saúde de Lisboa. Como instituição de ensino superior, temos o compromisso de promover e incentivar a pesquisa científica em todas as áreas do conhecimento que contemplam a nossa missão. Esta publicação tem como objetivo divulgar toda a produção científica desenvolvida pelos Professores, Investigadores, Estudantes e Pessoal não Docente da ESTeSL durante 2021. Este Anuário é, assim, o reflexo do trabalho árduo e dedicado da nossa comunidade, que se empenhou na produção de conteúdo científico de elevada qualidade e partilhada com a Sociedade na forma de livros, capítulos de livros, artigos publicados em revistas nacionais e internacionais, resumos de comunicações orais e pósteres, bem como resultado dos trabalhos de 1º e 2º ciclo. Com isto, o conteúdo desta publicação abrange uma ampla variedade de tópicos, desde temas mais fundamentais até estudos de aplicação prática em contextos específicos de Saúde, refletindo desta forma a pluralidade e diversidade de áreas que definem, e tornam única, a ESTeSL. Acreditamos que a investigação e pesquisa científica é um eixo fundamental para o desenvolvimento da sociedade e é por isso que incentivamos os nossos estudantes a envolverem-se em atividades de pesquisa e prática baseada na evidência desde o início dos seus estudos na ESTeSL. Esta publicação é um exemplo do sucesso desses esforços, sendo a maior de sempre, o que faz com que estejamos muito orgulhosos em partilhar os resultados e descobertas dos nossos investigadores com a comunidade científica e o público em geral. Machine Learning Research Trends in Africa: A 30 Years Overview with Bibliometric Analysis Review
In this paper, a critical bibliometric analysis study is conducted, coupled
with an extensive literature survey on recent developments and associated
applications in machine learning research with a perspective on Africa. The
presented bibliometric analysis study consists of 2761 machine learning-related
documents, of which 98% were articles with at least 482 citations published in
903 journals during the past 30 years. Furthermore, the collated documents were
retrieved from the Science Citation Index EXPANDED, comprising research
publications from 54 African countries between 1993 and 2021. The bibliometric
study shows the visualization of the current landscape and future trends in
machine learning research and its application to facilitate future
collaborative research and knowledge exchange among authors from different
research institutions scattered across the African continent
Acoustic modelling, data augmentation and feature extraction for in-pipe machine learning applications
Gathering measurements from infrastructure, private premises, and harsh environments can be difficult and expensive. From this perspective, the development of
new machine learning algorithms is strongly affected by the availability of training
and test data. We focus on audio archives for in-pipe events. Although several
examples of pipe-related applications can be found in the literature, datasets of
audio/vibration recordings are much scarcer, and the only references found relate
to leakage detection and characterisation. Therefore, this work proposes a methodology to relieve the burden of data collection for acoustic events in deployed pipes.
The aim is to maximise the yield of small sets of real recordings and demonstrate
how to extract effective features for machine learning. The methodology developed
requires the preliminary creation of a soundbank of audio samples gathered with
simple weak annotations. For practical reasons, the case study is given by a range
of appliances, fittings, and fixtures connected to pipes in domestic environments.
The source recordings are low-reverberated audio signals enhanced through a
bespoke spectral filter and containing the desired audio fingerprints. The soundbank is then processed to create an arbitrary number of synthetic augmented
observations. The data augmentation improves the quality and the quantity of
the metadata and automatically creates strong and accurate annotations that
are both machine and human-readable. Besides, the implemented processing
chain allows precise control of properties such as signal-to-noise ratio, duration
of the events, and the number of overlapping events. The inter-class variability
is expanded by recombining source audio blocks and adding simulated artificial
reverberation obtained through an acoustic model developed for the purpose.
Finally, the dataset is synthesised to guarantee separability and balance. A few
signal representations are optimised to maximise the classification performance,
and the results are reported as a benchmark for future developments. The contribution to the existing knowledge concerns several aspects of the processing chain
implemented. A novel quasi-analytic acoustic model is introduced to simulate
in-pipe reverberations, adopting a three-layer architecture particularly convenient
for batch processing. The first layer includes two algorithms: one for the numerical
calculation of the axial wavenumbers and one for the separation of the modes. The
latter, in particular, provides a workaround for a problem not explicitly treated in the
literature and related to the modal non-orthogonality given by the solid-liquid interface in the analysed domain. A set of results for different waveguides is reported
to compare the dispersive behaviour against different mechanical configurations.
Two more novel solutions are also included in the second layer of the model and
concern the integration of the acoustic sources. Specifically, the amplitudes of the
non-orthogonal modal potentials are obtained using either a distance minimisation
objective function or by solving an analytical decoupling problem. In both cases,
results show that sources sufficiently smooth can be approximated with a limited
number of modes keeping the error below 1%. The last layer proposes a bespoke
approach for the integration of the acoustic model into the synthesiser as a reverberation simulator. Additional elements of novelty relate to the other blocks of the
audio synthesiser. The statistical spectral filter, for instance, is a batch-processing
solution for the attenuation of the background noise of the source recordings. The
signal-to-noise ratio analysis for both moderate and high noise levels indicates
a clear improvement of several decibels against the closest filter example in the
literature. The recombination of the audio blocks and the system of fully tracked
annotations are also novel extensions of similar approaches recently adopted in
other contexts. Moreover, a bespoke synthesis strategy is proposed to guarantee
separable and balanced datasets. The last contribution concerns the extraction
of convenient sets of audio features. Elements of novelty are introduced for the
optimisation of the filter banks of the mel-frequency cepstral coefficients and the
scattering wavelet transform. In particular, compared to the respective standard
definitions, the average F-score performance of the optimised features is roughly
6% higher in the first case and 2.5% higher for the latter. Finally, the soundbank,
the synthetic dataset, and the fundamental blocks of the software library developed
are publicly available for further research
