Weighing matrices and spherical codes
Mutually unbiased weighing matrices (MUWM) are closely related to an
antipodal spherical code with 4 angles. In the present paper, we clarify the
relationship between MUWM and the spherical sets, and give the complete
solution about the maximum size of a set of MUWM of weight 4 for any order.
Moreover we describe some natural generalization of a set of MUWM from the
viewpoint of spherical codes, and determine several maximum sizes of the
generalized sets. They include an affirmative answer of the problem of Best,
Kharaghani, and Ramp.Comment: Title is changed from "Association schemes related to weighing

The Dynamics of Group Codes: Dual Abelian Group Codes and Systems
Fundamental results concerning the dynamics of abelian group codes
(behaviors) and their duals are developed. Duals of sequence spaces over
locally compact abelian groups may be defined via Pontryagin duality; dual
group codes are orthogonal subgroups of dual sequence spaces. The dual of a
complete code or system is finite, and the dual of a Laurent code or system is
(anti-)Laurent. If C and C^\perp are dual codes, then the state spaces of C act
as the character groups of the state spaces of C^\perp. The controllability
properties of C are the observability properties of C^\perp. In particular, C
is (strongly) controllable if and only if C^\perp is (strongly) observable, and
the controller memory of C is the observer memory of C^\perp. The controller
granules of C act as the character groups of the observer granules of C^\perp.
Examples of minimal observer-form encoder and syndrome-former constructions are
given. Finally, every observer granule of C is an "end-around" controller
granule of C.Comment: 30 pages, 11 figures. To appear in IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory, 200
Kerdock Codes Determine Unitary 2-Designs
The non-linear binary Kerdock codes are known to be Gray images of certain
extended cyclic codes of length over . We show that
exponentiating these -valued codewords by produces stabilizer states, that are quantum states obtained using
only Clifford unitaries. These states are also the common eigenvectors of
commuting Hermitian matrices forming maximal commutative subgroups (MCS) of the
Pauli group. We use this quantum description to simplify the derivation of the
classical weight distribution of Kerdock codes. Next, we organize the
stabilizer states to form mutually unbiased bases and prove that
automorphisms of the Kerdock code permute their corresponding MCS, thereby
forming a subgroup of the Clifford group. When represented as symplectic
matrices, this subgroup is isomorphic to the projective special linear group
PSL(). We show that this automorphism group acts transitively on the Pauli
matrices, which implies that the ensemble is Pauli mixing and hence forms a
unitary -design. The Kerdock design described here was originally discovered
by Cleve et al. (arXiv:1501.04592), but the connection to classical codes is
new which simplifies its description and translation to circuits significantly.
Sampling from the design is straightforward, the translation to circuits uses
only Clifford gates, and the process does not require ancillary qubits.
Finally, we also develop algorithms for optimizing the synthesis of unitary
-designs on encoded qubits, i.e., to construct logical unitary -designs.
Software implementations are available at
https://github.com/nrenga/symplectic-arxiv18a, which we use to provide
empirical gate complexities for up to qubits.Comment: 16 pages double-column, 4 figures, and some circuits. Accepted to

Self-Dual Codes
Self-dual codes are important because many of the best codes known are of
this type and they have a rich mathematical theory. Topics covered in this
survey include codes over F_2, F_3, F_4, F_q, Z_4, Z_m, shadow codes, weight
enumerators, Gleason-Pierce theorem, invariant theory, Gleason theorems,
bounds, mass formulae, enumeration, extremal codes, open problems. There is a
comprehensive bibliography.Comment: 136 page
MUBs inequivalence and affine planes
There are fairly large families of unitarily inequivalent complete sets of
N+1 mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) in C^N for various prime powers N. The
number of such sets is not bounded above by any polynomial as a function of N.
While it is standard that there is a superficial similarity between complete
sets of MUBs and finite affine planes, there is an intimate relationship
between these large families and affine planes. This note briefly summarizes
"old" results that do not appear to be well-known concerning known families of
complete sets of MUBs and their associated planes.Comment: This is the version of this paper appearing in J. Mathematical
