    Fractional Order State Feedback Control for Improved Lateral Stability of Semi-Autonomous Commercial Heavy Vehicles

    With the growing development of autonomous and semi-autonomous large commercial heavy vehicles, the lateral stability control of articulated vehicles have caught the attention of researchers recently. Active vehicle front steering (AFS) can enhance the handling performance and stability of articulated vehicles for an emergency highway maneuver scenario. However, with large vehicles such tractor-trailers, the system becomes more complex to control and there is an increased occurrence of instabilities. This research investigates a new control scheme based on fractional calculus as a technique that ensures lateral stability of articulated large heavy vehicles during evasive highway maneuvering scenarios. The control method is first implemented to a passenger vehicle model with 2-axles based on the well-known “bicycle model”. The model is then extended and applied onto larger three-axle commercial heavy vehicles in platooning operations. To validate the proposed new control algorithm, the system is linearized and a fractional order PI state feedback control is developed based on the linearized model. Then using Matlab/Simulink, the developed fractional-order linear controller is implemented onto the non-linear tractor-trailer dynamic model. The tractor-trailer system is modeled based on the conventional integer-order techniques and then a non-integer linear controller is developed to control the system. Overall, results confirm that the proposed controller improves the lateral stability of a tractor-trailer response time by 20% as compared to a professional truck driver during an evasive highway maneuvering scenario. In addition, the effects of variable truck cargo loading and longitudinal speed are evaluated to confirm the robustness of the new control method under a variety of potential operating conditions

    A detailed overview of photovoltaics (PV) performance modeling capabilities developed for analyzing PV system and component design and policy issues is provided. A set of 10 performance models are selected which span a representative range of capabilities from generalized first order calculations to highly specialized electrical network simulations. A set of performance modeling topics and characteristics is defined and used to examine some of the major issues associated with photovoltaic performance modeling. Each of the models is described in the context of these topics and characteristics to assess its purpose, approach, and level of detail. The issues are discussed in terms of the range of model capabilities available and summarized in tabular form for quick reference. The models are grouped into categories to illustrate their purposes and perspectives

    The clinical applications of cardiogoniometry in cardiovascular disease

    Cardiogoniometry (CGM) is a method of 3-dimensional electrocardiographic assessment which has primarily been investigated to evaluate its role in diagnosing patients with suspected coronary artery disease (CAD). Previous work has suggested it has considerable diagnostic ability at identifying patients with both stable CAD and those with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). However, previous studies which investigated the diagnostic performance of CGM in stable CAD did not use robust measures to accurately identify patients with physiologically significant coronary ischaemia. Furthermore, although the ability of CGM to identify specific lesions in stable CAD has been evaluated, to the best of our knowledge no research has been performed to assess the ability of CGM to detect the site of the culprit lesion in patients with non-ST elevation myocardial infarction. The first two studies of this thesis aim to address these two questions about the role of CGM in patients with CAD.Cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT) is a treatment used in patients with heart failure and left bundle branch block which attempts to restore synchronous contraction of the ventricles by pacing both the left and right ventricle together. Unfortunately, 25% of patients do not gain a clinical benefit from CRT, such patients are classed as ‘non-responders’. Many methods have been proposed to optimise CRT for ‘non-responders’, however, no specific optimisation method has yet been identified which significantly improves the long term benefit of CRT in non-responders. The detailed spatial and temporal information on cardiac electrical activity that CGM provides suggests that CGM may have a role in the optimisation of CRT. The aim of the third study in this thesis is to evaluate whether CGM can detect changes to CRT pacing settings, in view of developing a method of CRT optimisation using CGM

    Constraining Relativistic Bow Shock Properties in Rotation-Powered Millisecond Pulsar Binaries

    Multiwavelength followup of unidentified Fermi sources has vastly expanded the number of known galactic-field "black widow" and "redback" millisecond pulsar binaries. Focusing on their rotation-powered state, we interpret the radio to X-ray phenomenology in a consistent framework. We advocate the existence of two distinct modes differing in their intrabinary shock orientation, distinguished by the phase-centering of the double-peaked X-ray orbital modulation originating from mildly-relativistic Doppler boosting. By constructing a geometric model for radio eclipses, we constrain the shock geometry as functions of binary inclination and shock stand-off R0R_0. We develop synthetic X-ray synchrotron orbital light curves and explore the model parameter space allowed by radio eclipse constraints applied on archetypal systems B1957+20 and J1023+0038. For B1957+20, from radio eclipses the stand-off is R00.15R_0 \sim 0.15 -- 0.30.3 fraction of binary separation from the companion center, depending on the orbit inclination. Constructed X-ray light curves for B1957+20 using these values are qualitatively consistent with those observed, and we find occultation of the shock by the companion as a minor influence, demanding significant Doppler factors to yield double peaks. For J1023+0038, radio eclipses imply R00.4R_0 \lesssim 0.4 while X-ray light curves suggest 0.1R00.30.1\lesssim R_0 \lesssim 0.3 (from the pulsar). Degeneracies in the model parameter space encourage further development to include transport considerations. Generically, the spatial variation along the shock of the underlying electron power-law index should yield energy-dependence in the shape of light curves motivating future X-ray phase-resolved spectroscopic studies to probe the unknown physics of pulsar winds and relativistic shock acceleration therein.Comment: Accepted to ApJ, 36 pages, 15 figures; comments welcom

    The Annual Glaciohydrology Cycle in the Ablation Zone of the Greenland Ice Sheet: Part 1. Hydrology Model

    We apply a novel one-dimensional glacier hydrology model that calculates hydraulic head to the tidewater-terminating Sermeq Avannarleq flowline of the Greenland ice sheet. Within a plausible parameter space, the model achieves a quasi-steady-state annual cycle in which hydraulic head oscillates close to flotation throughout the ablation zone. Flotation is briefly achieved during the summer melt season along a approx.17 km stretch of the approx.50 km of flowline within the ablation zone. Beneath the majority of the flowline, subglacial conduit storage closes (i.e. obtains minimum radius) during the winter and opens (i.e. obtains maximum radius) during the summer. Along certain stretches of the flowline, the model predicts that subglacial conduit storage remains open throughout the year. A calculated mean glacier water residence time of approx.2.2 years implies that significant amounts of water are stored in the glacier throughout the year. We interpret this residence time as being indicative of the timescale over which the glacier hydrologic system is capable of adjusting to external surface meltwater forcings. Based on in situ ice velocity observations, we suggest that the summer speed-up event generally corresponds to conditions of increasing hydraulic head during inefficient subglacial drainage. Conversely, the slowdown during fall generally corresponds to conditions of decreasing hydraulic head during efficient subglacial drainage

    Design and Characterization of a Space Based Chromotomographic Hyperspectral Imaging Experiment

    This research focuses upon the design, analysis and characterization of several systems related to a spacebased chromotomographic experiment (CTEx), a hyperspectral imager, currently in development at the Air Force Institute of Technology. Three interrelated subject-areas were developed. The initial focal point was a generic, system-level mechanical layout and integration analysis of the space-based instrument. The scope of this work was intended to baseline the space-based system design in order to allow for further trade-space refinement and requirements development. Second, development of an iteration upon the ground-based version of CTEx was accomplished in an effort to support higher-fidelity field data-collection. This effort encompassed both the engineering design process as well as a system-level characterization test series to validate the enhancements to deviation angle, image quality, and alignment characterization methodologies. Finally, the third effort in this thesis related to the design, analysis, and characterization test campaign encompassing the space-based CTEx instrument computer unit (ICU). This activity produced an experimentally validated thermal mathematical model supporting further trade-space refinement and operational planning aspects for this device. Results from all three of the above focus areas support the transition of this next-generation technology from the laboratory to a fullyrealized, space-readied platform achieving intelligence preparation of the battlespace for the warfighter
