    Transclusion of document fragments from dynamic text

    Transclusion is a concept that allows users to reuse document fragments from different source pages, not by duplicating it, but by including a reference to the original work. Thus, transclusion provides an interesting platform for authors to quote text from other documents in a way such that the quoted text can be compared alongside its original context, and changes in the original document are reflected automatically in the user document. Several researchers have partially implemented transclusion using various techniques and technologies. The issue of transcluding text from a dynamic source page still persists because dynamic content changes have not been reflected. This research was based on finding a solution to this problem. Encrypted transcluded text, along with its reference, was stored in the user\u27s document. Using this encrypted message, a document fragment was located in the dynamic source page such that encryption of that fragment matched most closely to the recorded encrypted message. This returned document fragment ensured that changes in the original source documents were reflected in the user\u27s document. A test set was created with a modified source file, transcluded text, number, nature, and percentage change in the source file. The expected outcome, and the document fragment returned based on the algorithm, were used to determine the accuracy of the algorithm. The average accuracy of the algorithm obtained for the entire test set was found to be 0.92. Moreover, for 60% of the test set the algorithm\u27s predicted result matched the expected outcome exactly. The algorithm turned out to be quite forgiving, as even when the source document changed 100%, the average accuracy still turned out to be more than 75%. Thus, the algorithm can be used as a framework to transclude document fragments from dynamic source pages. The connection between the user document and the source document is retained, and more importantly the changes in the source document are accurately reflected in the user document, thereby allowing users to present their ideas effectively, such that readers can comprehend the ideas presented in the document, and re-use them as a framework for establishing their own ideas

    Evolution of documents - Information and Data objects

    The vast amount of data leading to the digital data explosion highlights the fact that the current data definition needs a change as the current systems are unable to track the evolution in a document over time without manual intervention. The concepts of Information and Data objects are introduced in this thesis to track the evolution information in a document. We developed the requirements for such a system in which the evolution information is automatically tracked by tracking the user copy and paste action and then using the data to create the evolution information about a specified document. A case study is discussed to further analyse the information and data flow in a collaboration. We have used this knowledge to design the system and then to implement the system so that the user copy and paste actions can be tracked to create the evolution information. The implementation is then presented to a group of experts to identify the problems and to get the feedback to improve the system

    Die Hypertext Theorie verwendet die selbe Terminologie, welche seit Jahrzehnten in der semiotischen Forschung untersucht wird, wie z.B. Zeichen, Text, Kommunikation, Code, Metapher, Paradigma, Syntax, usw. Aufbauend auf jenen Ergebnissen, welche in der Anwendung semiotischer Prinzipien und Methoden auf die Informatik erfolgreich waren, wie etwa Computer Semiotics, Computational Semiotics und Semiotic Interface Engineering, legt diese Dissertation einen systematischen Ansatz für all jene Forscher dar, die bereit sind, Hypertext aus einer semiotischen Perspektive zu betrachten. Durch die Verknüpfung existierender Hypertext-Modelle mit den Resultaten aus der Semiotik auf allen Sinnesebenen der textuellen, auditiven, visuellen, taktilen und geruchlichen Wahrnehmung skizziert der Autor Prolegomena einer Hypertext-Semiotik-Theorie, anstatt ein völlig neues Hypertext-Modell zu präsentieren. Eine Einführung in die Geschichte der Hypertexte, von ihrer Vorgeschichte bis zum heutigen Entwicklungsstand und den gegenwärtigen Entwicklungen im kommerzialisierten World Wide Web bilden den Rahmen für diesen Ansatz, welcher als Fundierung des Brückenschlages zwischen Mediensemiotik und Computer-Semiotik angesehen werden darf. Während Computer-Semiotiker wissen, dass der Computer eine semiotische Maschine ist und Experten der künstlichen Intelligenz-Forschung die Rolle der Semiotik in der Entwicklung der nächsten Hypertext-Generation betonen, bedient sich diese Arbeit einer breiteren methodologischen Basis. Dementsprechend reichen die Teilgebiete von Hypertextanwendungen, -paradigmen, und -strukturen, über Navigation, Web Design und Web Augmentation zu einem interdisziplinären Spektrum detaillierter Analysen, z.B. des Zeigeinstrumentes der Web Browser, des Klammeraffen-Zeichens und der sogenannten Emoticons. Die Bezeichnung ''Icon'' wird als unpassender Name für jene Bildchen, welche von der graphischen Benutzeroberfläche her bekannt sind und in Hypertexten eingesetzt werden, zurückgewiesen und diese Bildchen durch eine neue Generation mächtiger Graphic Link Markers ersetzt. Diese Ergebnisse werden im Kontext der Kommerzialisierung des Internet betrachtet. Neben der Identifizierung der Hauptprobleme des eCommerce aus der Perspektive der Hypertext Semiotik, widmet sich der Autor den Informationsgütern und den derzeitigen Hindernissen für die New Economy, wie etwa der restriktiven Gesetzeslage in Sachen Copyright und Intellectual Property. Diese anachronistischen Beschränkungen basieren auf der problematischen Annahme, dass auch der Informationswert durch die Knappheit bestimmt wird.     A Design-Science-Research Approach

    Neue Organisationsformen, wie evolutionäre Organisationen, bilden in vielen Kooperationsszenarien sozio-technische Konstrukte mit modernen CSCW Anwendungen aus. Daher erfordern Veränderungen dieser sozialen Systeme eine kontinuierliche Anpassung der technischen Tools an die neuen sozialen Konfigurationen. Diese Dissertation ist als Design Science Research (DSR) Projekt konzipiert und addressiert die folgende Forschungsfrage (RQ): “Wie können soziotechnische, evolutionäre Organisationen die Herausforderungen der joint optimization und des organizational choice während ihrer autopoietischen Veränderungsprozesse addressieren?” Die Fallstudie Viva con Agua de St. Pauli e.V. wurde mittels qualitativer und ethnographischer Methoden im Rahmen der entsprechenden DSR Zyklen untersucht. Das Forschungsprojekt fokussiert die Entwicklung von Artefakten indem sowohl eine technische, als auch eine soziale Perspektive eingenommen wird. Aus der technische Perspektive wird die RQ durch eine Microservice-Plattform adressiert. Die Architektur dient der Verteilung von Verantwortlichkeit für die Software in einem heterogenen Netzwerk von Entwickler:innen. Dabei müssen diverse neue Herausforderungen beachtet werden, wie etwa die Verteilung des User Interface. Durch die Betrachtung der RQ aus der sozialen Perspektive wird der USMU Workshop entwickelt. Dieses Artefakt dient der Verbindung der Charakteristika evolutionärer Organisationen mit agiler Software Entwicklung und mit Methoden des partizipativen Designs. Die Studien zeigen, dass beide Artefakte die RQ adressieren. Zudem konnte ich für beide Artefakte wertvolle Verbesserungsmöglichkeiten aufzeigen. Somit motivieren die Ergebnisse den nächsten Schritt des Projekts und die vorliegende Thesis wird Bestandteil des zyklischen Ablaufs eines DSR Projekts.The emergence of new types of organizational structures, such as evolutionary-teal organizations, almost always leads to the development of socio-technical constructs when it comes to working in collaboration with modern CSCW applications. A consequence of this is that the social system’s autopoietic change processes create challenges that compel one to adjust the implementation of the technical tool to the social system’s new configuration. This thesis is structured according to the design science research (DSR) approach and focuses on the research question (RQ): “How can socio-technical evolutionary-teal organizations address the challenges of joint optimization and organizational choice during their autopoietic processes?” For this purpose, the case study Viva con Agua de St. Pauli e.V. is investigated using a qualitative ethnographical approach during the DSR cycles. Addressing the RQ, two artifacts are designed from a technical as well as a social perspective. While the technical perspective primarily investigates the adjustments of technology, the social perspective focuses on the management of change in socio-technical evolutionary-teal organizations. I propose a microservice platform as an artifact that addresses the RQ from a technical perspective. The microservice architecture aims at spreading the responsibility for the software through a heterogeneous ecosystem of developers. The newly designed USMU workshop is addressing the RQ from the social perspective. It strives to intertwine the characteristics of evolutionary-teal organizations with agile software development and participatory design methods. In my studies, I examine the fact that both artifacts can be used to address the RQ. Additionally, I was able to identify valuable improvements for both of my artifacts. Hence, the project follows the lifecycle of a DSR project by reasoning through the results presented here for its next iteration

    Linked Research on the Decentralised Web

    This thesis is about research communication in the context of the Web. I analyse literature which reveals how researchers are making use of Web technologies for knowledge dissemination, as well as how individuals are disempowered by the centralisation of certain systems, such as academic publishing platforms and social media. I share my findings on the feasibility of a decentralised and interoperable information space where researchers can control their identifiers whilst fulfilling the core functions of scientific communication: registration, awareness, certification, and archiving. The contemporary research communication paradigm operates under a diverse set of sociotechnical constraints, which influence how units of research information and personal data are created and exchanged. Economic forces and non-interoperable system designs mean that researcher identifiers and research contributions are largely shaped and controlled by third-party entities; participation requires the use of proprietary systems. From a technical standpoint, this thesis takes a deep look at semantic structure of research artifacts, and how they can be stored, linked and shared in a way that is controlled by individual researchers, or delegated to trusted parties. Further, I find that the ecosystem was lacking a technical Web standard able to fulfill the awareness function of research communication. Thus, I contribute a new communication protocol, Linked Data Notifications (published as a W3C Recommendation) which enables decentralised notifications on the Web, and provide implementations pertinent to the academic publishing use case. So far we have seen decentralised notifications applied in research dissemination or collaboration scenarios, as well as for archival activities and scientific experiments. Another core contribution of this work is a Web standards-based implementation of a clientside tool, dokieli, for decentralised article publishing, annotations and social interactions. dokieli can be used to fulfill the scholarly functions of registration, awareness, certification, and archiving, all in a decentralised manner, returning control of research contributions and discourse to individual researchers. The overarching conclusion of the thesis is that Web technologies can be used to create a fully functioning ecosystem for research communication. Using the framework of Web architecture, and loosely coupling the four functions, an accessible and inclusive ecosystem can be realised whereby users are able to use and switch between interoperable applications without interfering with existing data. Technical solutions alone do not suffice of course, so this thesis also takes into account the need for a change in the traditional mode of thinking amongst scholars, and presents the Linked Research initiative as an ongoing effort toward researcher autonomy in a social system, and universal access to human- and machine-readable information. Outcomes of this outreach work so far include an increase in the number of individuals self-hosting their research artifacts, workshops publishing accessible proceedings on the Web, in-the-wild experiments with open and public peer-review, and semantic graphs of contributions to conference proceedings and journals (the Linked Open Research Cloud). Some of the future challenges include: addressing the social implications of decentralised Web publishing, as well as the design of ethically grounded interoperable mechanisms; cultivating privacy aware information spaces; personal or community-controlled on-demand archiving services; and further design of decentralised applications that are aware of the core functions of scientific communication

    Learning methods keep evolving and new paradigms are added to traditional teaching models where the information and communication systems, particularly the Web, are an essential part. In order to improve the processing capacity of information systems, the Semantic Web defines a model for describing resources (Resource Description Framework - RDF), and a language for defining ontologies (Web Ontology Language – OWL). Based on concepts, methods, learning theories, and following a systemic approach, we have used Semantic Web technologies in order to provide a learning system that is able to enrich and personalize the experience of the learner. As a result of our work we are proposing a prototype for an Active Semantic Learning System (SASA). Following the identification and modeling of entities involved in the learning process, we created the following six ontologies that summarize the characteristics of these entities: (1) learner ontology, (2) learning object ontology, (3) learning objective ontology, (4) evaluation object ontology, (5) annotation object ontology and (6) learning framework ontology. Integrating certain rules in the declared ontologies combined with reasoning capacities of the inference engines embedded in the kernel of the SASA, allow the adaptation of learning content to the characteristics of learners. The use of semantic technologies facilitates the identification of existing learning resources on the web as well as the interpretation and aggregation of these resources within the context of SASALes méthodes d’apprentissage évoluent et aux modèles classiques d’enseignement viennent s’ajouter de nouveaux paradigmes, dont les systèmes d’information et de communication, notamment le Web, sont une partie essentielle. Afin améliorer la capacité de traitement de l’information de ces systèmes, le Web sémantique définit un modèle de description de ressources (Resource Description Framework – RDF), ainsi qu’un langage pour la définition d’ontologies (Web Ontology Language – OWL). Partant des concepts, des méthodes, des théories d’apprentissage, en suivant une approche systémique, nous avons utilisé les technologies du Web sémantique pour réaliser une plateforme d’apprentissage capable d’enrichir et de personnaliser l’expérience de l’apprenant. Les résultats de nos travaux sont concrétisés dans la proposition d’un prototype pour un Système Actif et Sémantique d’Apprentissage (SASA). Suite à l’identification et la modélisation des entités participant à l’apprentissage, nous avons construit six ontologies, englobant les caractéristiques de ces entités. Elles sont les suivantes : (1) ontologie de l’apprenant, (2) ontologie de l’objet pédagogique, (3) ontologie de l’objectif d’apprentissage, (4) ontologie de l’objet d’évaluation, (5) ontologie de l’objet d’annotation et (6) ontologie du cadre d’enseignement. L’intégration des règles au niveau des ontologies déclarées, cumulée avec les capacités de raisonnement des moteurs d’inférences incorporés au niveau du noyau sémantique du SASA, permettent l’adaptation du contenu d’apprentissage aux particularités des apprenants. L’utilisation des technologies sémantiques facilite l’identification des ressources d’apprentissage existant sur le Web ainsi que l’interprétation et l’agrégation de ces ressources dans le cadre du SAS
