Recognition of Microseismic and Blasting Signals in Mines Based on Convolutional Neural Network and Stockwell Transform
The microseismic monitoring signals which need to be determined in mines include those caused by both rock bursts and by blasting. The blasting signals must be separated from the microseismic signals in order to extract the information needed for the correct location of the source and for determining the blast mechanism. The use of a convolutional neural network (CNN) is a viable approach to extract these blast characteristic parameters automatically and to achieve the accuracy needed in the signal recognition. The Stockwell Transform (or S-Transform) has excellent two-dimensional time-frequency characteristics and thus to obtain the microseismic signal and blasting vibration signal separately, the microseismic signal has been converted in this work into a two-dimensional image format by use of the S-Transform, following which it is recognized by using the CNN. The sample data given in this paper are used for model training, where the training sample is an image containing three RGB color channels. The training time can be decreased by means of reducing the picture size and thus reducing the number of training steps used. The optimal combination of parameters can then be obtained after continuously updating the training parameters. When the image size is 180 Ă— 140 pixels, it has been shown that the test accuracy can reach 96.15% and that it is feasible to classify separately the blasting signal and the microseismic signal based on using the S-Transform and the CNN model architecture, where the training parameters were designed by synthesizing LeNet-5 and AlexNet
Neurophysiological Profile of Antismoking Campaigns
Over the past few decades, antismoking public service announcements (PSAs) have been used by governments to promote healthy
behaviours in citizens, for instance, against drinking before the drive and against smoke. Effectiveness of such PSAs has been
suggested especially for young persons. By now, PSAs efficacy is still mainly assessed through traditional methods (questionnaires
and metrics) and could be performed only after the PSAs broadcasting, leading to waste of economic resources and time in the
case of Ineffective PSAs. One possible countermeasure to such ineffective use of PSAs could be promoted by the evaluation of the
cerebral reaction to the PSA of particular segments of population (e.g., old, young, and heavy smokers). In addition, it is crucial to
gather such cerebral activity in front of PSAs that have been assessed to be effective against smoke (Effective PSAs), comparing
results to the cerebral reactions to PSAs that have been certified to be not effective (Ineffective PSAs). &e eventual differences
between the cerebral responses toward the two PSA groups will provide crucial information about the possible outcome of new
PSAs before to its broadcasting. &is study focused on adult population, by investigating the cerebral reaction to the vision of
different PSA images, which have already been shown to be Effective and Ineffective for the promotion of an antismoking
behaviour. Results showed how variables as gender and smoking habits can influence the perception of PSA images, and how
different communication styles of the antismoking campaigns could facilitate the comprehension of PSA’s message and then
enhance the related impac
Deep Learning in Cardiology
The medical field is creating large amount of data that physicians are unable
to decipher and use efficiently. Moreover, rule-based expert systems are
inefficient in solving complicated medical tasks or for creating insights using
big data. Deep learning has emerged as a more accurate and effective technology
in a wide range of medical problems such as diagnosis, prediction and
intervention. Deep learning is a representation learning method that consists
of layers that transform the data non-linearly, thus, revealing hierarchical
relationships and structures. In this review we survey deep learning
application papers that use structured data, signal and imaging modalities from
cardiology. We discuss the advantages and limitations of applying deep learning
in cardiology that also apply in medicine in general, while proposing certain
directions as the most viable for clinical use.Comment: 27 pages, 2 figures, 10 table
Rapid deconvolution of low-resolution time-of-flight data using Bayesian inference
The deconvolution of low-resolution time-of-flight data has numerous advantages, including the ability to extract additional information from the experimental data. We augment the well-known Lucy-Richardson deconvolution algorithm using various Bayesian prior distributions and show that a prior of second-differences of the signal outperforms the standard Lucy-Richardson algorithm, accelerating the rate of convergence by more than a factor of four, while preserving the peak amplitude ratios of a similar fraction of the total peaks. A novel stopping criterion and boosting mechanism are implemented to ensure that these methods converge to a similar final entropy and local minima are avoided. Improvement by a factor of two in mass resolution allows more accurate quantification of the spectra. The general method is demonstrated in this paper through the deconvolution of fragmentation peaks of the 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid matrix and the benzyltriphenylphosphonium thermometer ion, following femtosecond ultraviolet laser desorption
Towards Picogram Detection of Superparamagnetic Iron-Oxide Particles Using a Gradiometric Receive Coil
Superparamagnetic iron-oxide nanoparticles can be used in a variety of
medical applications like vascular or targeted imaging. Magnetic particle
imaging (MPI) is a promising tomographic imaging technique that allows
visualizing the 3D nanoparticle distribution concentration in a non-invasive
manner. The two main strengths of MPI are high temporal resolution and high
sensitivity. While the first has been proven in the assessment of dynamic
processes like cardiac imaging, it is unknown how far the detection limit of
MPI can be lowered. Within this work, we will present a highly sensitive
gradiometric receive-coil unit combined with a noise-matching network tailored
for the measurement of mice. The setup is capable of detecting 5 ng of iron in
vitro at 2.14 sec acquisition time. In terms of iron concentration we are able
to detect 156 {\mu}g/L marking the lowest value that has been reported for an
MPI scanner so far. In vivo MPI mouse images of a 512 ng bolus at 21.5 ms
acquisition time allow for capturing the flow of an intravenously injected
tracer through the heart of a mouse. Since it has been rather difficult to
compare detection limits across MPI publications we propose guidelines
improving the comparability of future MPI studies.Comment: 15 Pages, 7 Figures, V2: Changed the initials of Author Kannan M

A survey of comics research in computer science
Graphical novels such as comics and mangas are well known all over the world.
The digital transition started to change the way people are reading comics,
more and more on smartphones and tablets and less and less on paper. In the
recent years, a wide variety of research about comics has been proposed and
might change the way comics are created, distributed and read in future years.
Early work focuses on low level document image analysis: indeed comic books are
complex, they contains text, drawings, balloon, panels, onomatopoeia, etc.
Different fields of computer science covered research about user interaction
and content generation such as multimedia, artificial intelligence,
human-computer interaction, etc. with different sets of values. We propose in
this paper to review the previous research about comics in computer science, to
state what have been done and to give some insights about the main outlooks
