    A DATABASE ARCHITECTURE FOR SUPPORTING BUSINESS TRANSACTIONS

    The central hypothesis of this paper is that database design and systems design in general can be simplified considerably by tailoring the design methods to a suitable range of applications. Domain-specific knowledge can be incorporated into a specialized database architecture that leaves the designer with the task to specify only the application-specific parts. Based on an analysis of business constraints, we propose such an architecture for the domain of business transaction processing. The architecture offers several data and transaction management services, special-purpose sub-databases, and design checking rules to be used by the application designer.     An Adaptive Context-Aware Transaction Model for Mobile and Ubiquitous Computing

    Transaction management for mobile and ubiquitous computing (MUC)aims at providing mobile users with reliable and transparent services anytime anywhere. Traditional mobile transaction models built on client-proxy-server architecture cannot make this vision a reality because (1) in these models, base stations (proxy) are the prerequisite for mobile hosts (client) to connect with databases (server), and 2)few models consider context-based transaction management. In this paper, we propose a new network architecture for MUC transactions, with the goal that people can get online network access and transaction even while moving around; and design a context-aware transaction model and a context-driven coordination algorithm adaptive to dynamically changing MUC transaction context. The simulation results have demonstrated that our model and algorithm can significantly improve the successful ratio of MUC transactions

    Anatomy of a Native XML Base Management System

    Several alternatives to manage large XML document collections exist, ranging from file systems over relational or other database systems to specifically tailored XML repositories. In this paper we give a tour of Natix, a database management system designed from scratch for storing and processing XML data. Contrary to the common belief that management of XML data is just another application for traditional databases like relational systems, we illustrate how almost every component in a database system is affected in terms of adequacy and performance. We show how to design and optimize areas such as storage, transaction management comprising recovery and multi-user synchronisation as well as query processing for XML

    ElasTraS: An Elastic Transactional Data Store in the Cloud

    Over the last couple of years, "Cloud Computing" or "Elastic Computing" has emerged as a compelling and successful paradigm for internet scale computing. One of the major contributing factors to this success is the elasticity of resources. In spite of the elasticity provided by the infrastructure and the scalable design of the applications, the elephant (or the underlying database), which drives most of these web-based applications, is not very elastic and scalable, and hence limits scalability. In this paper, we propose ElasTraS which addresses this issue of scalability and elasticity of the data store in a cloud computing environment to leverage from the elastic nature of the underlying infrastructure, while providing scalable transactional data access.     Middleware-based Database Replication: The Gaps between Theory and Practice

    The need for high availability and performance in data management systems has been fueling a long running interest in database replication from both academia and industry. However, academic groups often attack replication problems in isolation, overlooking the need for completeness in their solutions, while commercial teams take a holistic approach that often misses opportunities for fundamental innovation. This has created over time a gap between academic research and industrial practice. This paper aims to characterize the gap along three axes: performance, availability, and administration. We build on our own experience developing and deploying replication systems in commercial and academic settings, as well as on a large body of prior related work. We sift through representative examples from the last decade of open-source, academic, and commercial database replication systems and combine this material with case studies from real systems deployed at Fortune 500 customers. We propose two agendas, one for academic research and one for industrial R&D, which we believe can bridge the gap within 5-10 years. This way, we hope to both motivate and help researchers in making the theory and practice of middleware-based database replication more relevant to each other.Comment: 14 pages. Appears in Proc.     Integrity Constraint Checking in Federated Databases

    A federated database is comprised of multiple interconnected databases that cooperate in an autonomous fashion. Global integrity constraints are very useful in federated databases, but the lack of global queries, global transaction mechanisms, and global concurrency control renders traditional constraint management techniques inapplicable. The paper presents a threefold contribution to integrity constraint checking in federated databases: (1) the problem of constraint checking in a federated database environment is clearly formulated; (2) a family of cooperative protocols for constraint checking is presented; (3) the differences across protocols in the family are analyzed with respect to system requirements, properties guaranteed, and costs involved. Thus, we provide a suite of options with protocols for various environments with specific system capabilities and integrity requirement

    Application performance and scalability of a large distributed multi-tiered application is a core requirement for most of today's critical business applications. I have investigated the scalability of a J2EE application server using the standard ECperf benchmark application in the Massey Beowulf Clusters namely the Sisters and the Helix. My testing environment consists of Open Source software: The integrated JBoss-Tomcat as the application server and the web server, along with PostgreSQL as the database. My testing programs were run on the clustered application server, which provide replication of the Enterprise Java Bean (EJB) objects. I have completed various centralized and distributed tests using the JBoss Cluster. I concluded that clustering of the application server and web server will effectively increase the performance of the application running on them given sufficient system resources. The application performance will scale to a point where a bottleneck has occurred in the testing system, the bottleneck could be any resources included in the testing environment: the hardware, software, network and the application that is running. Performance tuning for a large-scale J2EE application is a complicated issue, which is related to the resources available. However, by carefully identifying the performance bottleneck in the system with hardware, software, network, operating system and application configuration. I can improve the performance of the J2EE applications running in a Beowulf Cluster. The software bottleneck can be solved by changing the default settings, on the other hand, hardware bottlenecks are harder unless more investment are made to purchase higher speed and capacity hardware
