Significance of Trans-European Transport Networks for Logistics Centre Localization as Exemplified by the ƁódĆș Region

    Get PDF
This work complements and structures knowledge in the field of logistics centres (with focus on the ƁódĆș region). It presents a thorough analysis of strategic documents of the European Union in reference to the functioning of international transport networks. It also provides a detailed description of logistics facilities operations from the theoretical standpoint and definition of relations in points where logistics centres and TEN-T networks overlap. The result of this work is a set of recommendations referring to effective development of logistics centres on the background of transport corridors

Stereo Matching in Address-Event-Representation (AER) Bio-Inspired Binocular Systems in a Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA)

    Get PDF
In stereo-vision processing, the image-matching step is essential for results, although it involves a very high computational cost. Moreover, the more information is processed, the more time is spent by the matching algorithm, and the more ine cient it is. Spike-based processing is a relatively new approach that implements processing methods by manipulating spikes one by one at the time they are transmitted, like a human brain. The mammal nervous system can solve much more complex problems, such as visual recognition by manipulating neuron spikes. The spike-based philosophy for visual information processing based on the neuro-inspired address-event-representation (AER) is currently achieving very high performance. The aim of this work was to study the viability of a matching mechanism in stereo-vision systems, using AER codification and its implementation in a field-programmable gate array (FPGA). Some studies have been done before in an AER system with monitored data using a computer; however, this kind of mechanism has not been implemented directly on hardware. To this end, an epipolar geometry basis applied to AER systems was studied and implemented, with other restrictions, in order to achieve good results in a real-time scenario. The results and conclusions are shown, and the viability of its implementation is proven.Ministerio de EconomĂa y Competitividad TEC2016-77785-

Dual-band substrate integrated waveguide textile antenna with integrated solar harvester

    Get PDF
A dual-band wearable textile antenna based on substrate integrated waveguide technology is presented for operation in the [2.4-2.4835]-GHz Industrial, Scientific and Medical band and the [2.5-2.69]-GHz 4G LTE band 7. The antenna features an integrated flexible solar harvesting system, consisting of a flexible solar cell, a power management system, and energy storage. All these components are judiciously positioned on the antenna platform in order not to affect its radiation performance. The measured reflection coefficients and radiation characteristics after bending and deploying the antenna on a human body prove that the antenna is well suited for on-body use. A measured on-body antenna gain and radiation efficiency of 5.0 dBi and 89% are realized. Measurements in a real-life situation have demonstrated the ability to scavenge a maximum of 53 mW by means of a single integrated flexible solar cell

The Mechanics of Embodiment: A Dialogue on Embodiment and Computational Modeling

    Get PDF
Embodied theories are increasingly challenging traditional views of cognition by arguing that conceptual representations that constitute our knowledge are grounded in sensory and motor experiences, and processed at this sensorimotor level, rather than being represented and processed abstractly in an amodal conceptual system. Given the established empirical foundation, and the relatively underspecified theories to date, many researchers are extremely interested in embodied cognition but are clamouring for more mechanistic implementations. What is needed at this stage is a push toward explicit computational models that implement sensory-motor grounding as intrinsic to cognitive processes. In this article, six authors from varying backgrounds and approaches address issues concerning the construction of embodied computational models, and illustrate what they view as the critical current and next steps toward mechanistic theories of embodiment. The first part has the form of a dialogue between two fictional characters: Ernest, the ïżœexperimenterïżœ, and Mary, the ïżœcomputational modellerïżœ. The dialogue consists of an interactive sequence of questions, requests for clarification, challenges, and (tentative) answers, and touches the most important aspects of grounded theories that should inform computational modeling and, conversely, the impact that computational modeling could have on embodied theories. The second part of the article discusses the most important open challenges for embodied computational modelling

Migrating agile methods to standardized development practice

    Get PDF
Situated process and quality frame-works offer a way to resolve the tensions that arise when introducing agile methods into standardized software development engineering. For these to be successful, however, organizations must grasp the opportunity to reintegrate software development management, theory, and practice

Diversity textile antenna systems for firefighters

Off-body communication systems are valuable to improve the security of rescue workers by allowing them to transmit vital information collected by sensors. As rescue workers often work in indoor environments characterized by many obstructions, non line-of-sight propagation with multipath effects and shadowing compromises the performance of the wireless communication. The reliability is enhanced drastically by the use of diversity techniques. In the measurement campaign presented, the performance of such an off-body diversity system is compared for two antenna configurations: two dual-polarized antennas, versus four circularly polarized antennas. The actual data transmission confirms the marginal difference between the two configurations, suggesting the use of dual-polarized systems for reasons of user convenience and ease of practical implementation

An exploration of synchronization solutions for parallel short-range optical interconnect in mesochronous systems

    Get PDF
As a result of the increasing complexity of electronic chips, the bandwidths required for inter- and intra-chip communication are rapidly increasing. As optoelectronics provides high=bandwidth and high-density interconnection it is considered as a candidate for short-range interconnection. For such interconnections, situated at a low level in the systems hierarchy, the interconnect latency is extremely critical for the systems performance. This paper describes some methods for mesochronous synchronization, needed for such interconnections. It will be shown that it can be beneficial to use an additional optical link to transfer a synchronization signal. Such a reference signal can be used efficiently for phase detection, provided that the data skew is sufficiently small, and result in a decrease of the cost-per-link
