    Global tracking for an underactuated ships with bounded feedback controllers

    In this paper, we present a global state feedback tracking controller for underactuated surface marine vessels. This controller is based on saturated control inputs and, under an assumption on the reference trajectory, the closed-loop system is globally asymptotically stable (GAS). It has been designed using a 3 Degree of Freedom benchmark vessel model used in marine engineering. The main feature of our controller is the boundedness of the control inputs, which is an essential consideration in real life. In absence of velocity measurements, the controller works and remains stable with observers and can be used as an output feedback controller. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of this method

    Development of Modeling and Simulation Platform for Path-Planning and Control of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles in Three-Dimensional Spaces

    Autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) operating in deep sea and littoral environments have diverse applications including marine biology exploration, ocean environment monitoring, search for plane crash sites, inspection of ship-hulls and pipelines, underwater oil rig maintenance, border patrol, etc. Achieving autonomy in underwater vehicles relies on a tight integration between modules of sensing, navigation, decision-making, path-planning, trajectory tracking, and low-level control. This system integration task benefits from testing the related algorithms and techniques in a simulated environment before implementation in a physical test bed. This thesis reports on the development of a modeling and simulation platform that supports the design and testing of path planning and control algorithms in a synthetic AUV, representing a simulated version of a physical AUV. The approach allows integration between path-planners and closed-loop controllers that enable the synthetic AUV to track dynamically feasible trajectories in three-dimensional spaces. The dynamical behavior of the AUV is modeled using the equations of motion that incorporate the effects of external forces (e.g., buoyancy, gravity, hydrodynamic drag, centripetal force, Coriolis force, etc.), thrust forces, and inertial forces acting on the AUV. The equations of motion are translated into a state space formulation and the S-function feature of the Simulink and MATLAB scripts are used to evolve the state trajectories from initial conditions. A three-dimensional visualization of the resulting AUV motion is achieved by feeding the corresponding position and orientation states into an animation code. Experimental validation is carried out by performing integrated waypoint planner (e.g., using the popular A* algorithm) and PD controller implementations that allow the traversal of the synthetic AUV in two-dimensional (XY, XZ, YZ) and three-dimensional spaces. An underwater pipe-line inspection task carried out by the AUV is demonstrated in a simulated environment. The simulation testbed holds a potential to support planner and controller design for implementation in physical AUVs, thereby allowing exploration of various research topics in the field

    Underactuated leader-follower synchronisation for multi-agent systems with rejection of unknown disturbances

    Author preprintIn this paper leader-follower synchronization is considered for underactuated followers in an inhomogeneous multi-agent system. The goal is to synchronise the motion of a leader and an underactuated follower. Measurements of the leader's position and velocity are available, while the dynamics and trajectory of the leader is unknown. The leader velocities are used as input for a constant bearing guidance algorithm to assure that the follower synchronises its motion to the leader. It is also shown that the proposed leader-follower scheme can be applied to multi-agent systems that are subjected to unknown environmental disturbances. Furthermore, the trajectory of the leader does not need to be known. The stability properties of the complete control scheme and the unactuated internal dynamics are analysed using nonlinear cascaded system theory.     Nonlinear Trajectory Tracking Control for Marine Vessels with Additive Uncertainties

    The paper presents a nonlinear control law for a marine vessel to track a reference trajectory. In the wake of theresults obtained in [19], an integrative approach is incorporated in the linear algebra methodology in order toreduce the effect of the uncertainty in the tracking error. This new approach does not increase the complexityof the design methodology. In addition, the zero convergence of tracking error under polynomial uncertaintiesis demonstrated.     Adaptive neural network control of underactuated surface vessels with guaranteed transient performance: Theory and experimental results

    In this paper, an adaptive trajectory trackingcontrol algorithm for underactuated unmanned surfacevessels (USVs) with guaranteed transient performance isproposed. To meet the realistic dynamical model of USVs,we consider that the mass and damping matrices are notdiagonal and the input saturation problem. Neural Networks(NNs) are employed to approximate the unknown externaldisturbances and uncertain hydrodynamics of USVs. Moreover,both full state feedback control and output feedbackcontrol are presented, and the unmeasurable velocities ofthe output feedback controller are estimated via a highgainobserver. Unlike the conventional control methods,we employ the error transformation function to guaranteethe transient tracking performance. Both simulation andexperimental results are carried out to validate the superiorperformance via comparing with traditional potential integral(PI) control approaches
