    The novel application of optimization and charge blended energy management control for component downsizing within a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle

    The adoption of Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) is widely seen as an interim solution for the decarbonization of the transport sector. Within a PHEV, determining the required energy storage capacity of the battery remains one of the primary concerns for vehicle manufacturers and system integrators. This fact is particularly pertinent since the battery constitutes the largest contributor to vehicle mass. Furthermore, the financial cost associated with the procurement, design and integration of battery systems is often cited as one of the main barriers to vehicle commercialization. The ability to integrate the optimization of the energy management control system with the sizing of key PHEV powertrain components presents a significant area of research. Contained within this paper is an optimization study in which a charge blended strategy is used to facilitate the downsizing of the electrical machine, the internal combustion engine and the high voltage battery. An improved Equivalent Consumption Method has been used to manage the optimal power split within the powertrain as the PHEV traverses a range of different drivecycles. For a target CO2 value and drivecycle, results show that this approach can yield significant downsizing opportunities, with cost reductions on the order of 2%–9% being realizable

    Analytical Optimal Solution to the Energy Management Problem in Series Hybrid Electric Vehicles

    [EN] An optimal solution to the energy management problem in hybrid electric vehicles has been extensively addressed in the literature during the last decade, especially with the application of dynamic programming, the Pontryagin minimum principle, or equivalent consumption minimization strategy. However, most of the works consist in finding cycle-specific optimal trajectories, which are far from being general control strategies. The aim of this work is to derive an analytical expression, general and not cycle specific, for the energy management problem that summarizes the optimal controls for a series hybrid electric vehicle. Starting from a simple definition of the powertrain, an explicit formulation is deducted to minimize fuel consumption based on an analytic analysis of the Pontryagin minimum principle. Explicit expressions for control variables and costates are provided. The result is a general control strategy that specifies the optimal generator set usage for a given probability distribution of expected traction demands. This methodology is benchmarked with common methods in the literature (dynamic programming and numerical Pontryagin minimum principle) showing near identical results but with strongly reduced computational time.     A study on look-ahead control and energy management strategies in hybrid electric vehicles

    Fuel efficiency in a hybrid electric vehicle requires a fine balance between usage of combustion engine and battery power. Information about the geometry of the road and traffic ahead can have a great impact on optimized control and the power split between the main parts of a hybrid electric vehicle. This paper provides a survey on the existing methods of control and energy management emphasizing on those that consider the look-ahead road situation and trajectory information. Then it presents the future trends in the control and energy management of hybrid electric vehicles.<br /

    Least costly energy management for series hybrid electric vehicles

    Energy management of plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) has different challenges from non-plug-in HEVs, due to bigger batteries and grid recharging. Instead of tackling it to pursue energetic efficiency, an approach minimizing the driving cost incurred by the user - the combined costs of fuel, grid energy and battery degradation - is here proposed. A real-time approximation of the resulting optimal policy is then provided, as well as some analytic insight into its dependence on the system parameters. The advantages of the proposed formulation and the effectiveness of the real-time strategy are shown by means of a thorough simulation campaign

    V této práci je popsán obecný model paralélního hybridního automobilu. Celkový hnací systém je složen z menších sub-systémů popsaných pomocí kvazi-statického modelování. Pro dané cesty je vypočítána potřebná síla pro pohon vozidla po trase. Na základě znalosti požadované síly jsou testovány tři řídící systémy. První je založen na heuristických pravidlech. Druhý je založen na optimalizaci dané funkce jenž představuje výslednou spotřebu nebo množství vytvořenýh emisí. Třetí systém je založen na metodě ECMS.In this work is proposed the generalized powertrain of the parallel hybrid car. The powertrain is composed from the sub-models of the power sources. Each sub-model is described by the quasi-static modeling. For given routes is computed the power demand. Based on the derived power demand, three energy management systems are tested. First system is based on heuristic rules. The second one use more sophisticated control algorithms - the optimization method. Main idea is based on minimum principle, when the control algorithm tries to minimize the cost function (fuel use, emission). The last one is based on the equivalent consumption minimization strategy.

    Development of Real-time Optimal Control Strategy of Hybrid Transit Bus Based on Predicted Driving Pattern

    The control strategy of a hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) has been an active research area in the past decades. The main goal of the optimal control strategy is to maximize the fuel economy and minimize exhaust emissions while also satisfying the expected vehicle performance. Dynamic programming (DP) is an algorithm capable of finding the global optimal solution of HEV operation. However, DP cannot be used as a real-time control approach as it requires pre-known driving information. The equivalent consumption minimization strategy (ECMS) is a real-time control approach, but it always results in local optima due to the non-convex cost function. In my research, a ECMS with DP combined model (ECMSwDP) was proposed, which was a compromise between optimality and real-time capability. In this approach, the optimal equivalent factor (lambda) for a real-time ECMS controller can be derived using ECMSwDP for a given driving condition. The optimal lambda obtained using ECMSwDP was further processed to derive the lambda map, which was a function of vehicle operation and driving information. Six lambda maps were generated corresponding to the developed representative driving patterns. At each distance segment of a drive cycle, the suitable lambda value is available from one of the six lambda maps based on the identified driving pattern and current vehicle operation.;An adaptive ECMS (A-ECMS) model with a driving pattern identification model is developed to achieve the real-time optimal control for a HEV. A-ECMS was capable of controlling the ratio of power provided by the ICE and battery of a hybrid vehicle by selecting the lambda based on the identified lambda map. The effect on fuel consumption of the control strategies developed using the rule-based controller, ECMSwDP, A-ECMS, and DP was simulated using the parallel hybrid bus model developed in this research. The control strategies developed using A-ECMS are able to significantly improve the fuel economy while maintaining the battery charge sustainability. The corrected fuel economy observed with A-ECMS with a penalty function and the average lambda of RDPs was 5.55%, 13.67%, and 19.19% gap to that observed with DP when operated over the Beijing cycle, WVU-CSI cycle, and the actual transit bus route, respectively. The corrected fuel economy observed with A-ECMS with lambda maps of the RDPs was 4.83%, 10.61%, and 14.33% gap to that observed with DP when operated on the Beijing cycle, WVU-CSI cycle, and actual transit bus route, respectively. The simulation results demonstrated that the proposed A-ECMS approaches have the capability to achieve real time suboptimal control of a HEV while maintaining the charge sustainability of the battery

    MILITARY VEHICLE OPTIMIZATION AND CONTROL

    It is remarkable that there are no deployed military hybrid vehicles since battlefield fuel is approximately 100 times the cost of civilian fuel. In the commercial marketplace, where fuel prices are much lower, electric hybrid vehicles have become increasingly common due to their increased fuel efficiency and the associated operating cost benefit. An absence of military hybrid vehicles is not due to a lack of investment in research and development, but rather because applying hybrid vehicle architectures to a military application has unique challenges. These challenges include inconsistent duty cycles for propulsion requirements and the absence of methods to look at vehicle energy in a holistic sense. This dissertation provides a remedy to these challenges by presenting a method to quantify the benefits of a military hybrid vehicle by regarding that vehicle as a microgrid. This innovative concept allowed for the creation of an expandable multiple input numerical optimization method that was implemented for both real-time control and system design optimization. An example of each of these implementations was presented. Optimization in the loop using this new method was compared to a traditional closed loop control system and proved to be more fuel efficient. System design optimization using this method successfully illustrated battery size optimization by iterating through various electric duty cycles. By utilizing this new multiple input numerical optimization method, a holistic view of duty cycle synthesis, vehicle energy use, and vehicle design optimization can be achieved

    Determination of the adjoint state evolution for the efficient operation of a hybrid electric vehicle

    To minimize the fuel consumption in hybrid electric vehicles, it is necessary to define a strategy for the management of the power flows within the vehicle. Under the assumption that the velocity to be developed by the vehicle is known a priori, this problem may be posed as a nonlinear optimal control problem with control and state constraints. We find the solution to this problem using the optimality conditions given by the Pontryagin Maximum Principle. This leads to boundary value problems that we solve using a software tool named PASVA4. On real time operation, the velocity to be developed by the vehicle is not known in advance. We show how the adjoint state obtained from the former problem may be used as a weighing factor, called ‘‘equivalent consumption’’.     Optimal Transient Real-Time Engine-Generator Control in the Series-Hybrid Vehicle

    We study the dynamic engine-generator optimal control problem with a goal of minimizing fuel consumption while delivering a requested average electrical power. By using an infinite-horizon formulation and explicitly minimizing fuel consumption, we avoid issues inherent with penalty-based and finite-horizon problems. The solution to the optimal control problem, found using dynamic programming and the successive approximation method, can be expressed as instantaneous non-linear state-feedback. This allows for trivial real-time control, typically requiring 10–20 CPU instructions per control period, a few bytes of RAM, and 5–20 KiB of nonvolatile memory. Simulation results for a passenger vehicle indicate a fuel consumption improvement in the region of 5–7% during the transient phase when compared with the class of controllers found in the industry. Bench-tests, where the optimal controller is executed in native hardware, show an improvement of 3.7%, primarily limited by unmodeled dynamics. Our specific choice of problem formulation, a guaranteed globally optimal solution, and trivial real-time control resolve many of the limitations with the current state of optimal engine-generator controllers
