    Advances in Mechanical Systems Dynamics 2020

    The fundamentals of mechanical system dynamics were established before the beginning of the industrial era. The 18th century was a very important time for science and was characterized by the development of classical mechanics. This development progressed in the 19th century, and new, important applications related to industrialization were found and studied. The development of computers in the 20th century revolutionized mechanical system dynamics owing to the development of numerical simulation. We are now in the presence of the fourth industrial revolution. Mechanical systems are increasingly integrated with electrical, fluidic, and electronic systems, and the industrial environment has become characterized by the cyber-physical systems of industry 4.0. Within this framework, the status-of-the-art has become represented by integrated mechanical systems and supported by accurate dynamic models able to predict their dynamic behavior. Therefore, mechanical systems dynamics will play a central role in forthcoming years. This Special Issue aims to disseminate the latest research findings and ideas in the field of mechanical systems dynamics, with particular emphasis on novel trends and applications

    Motorcycle’s Trajectory Tracking Model Based on Polynomial Least-squares Approximation

    This paper provides a simple method for modeling the trajectory of motorcycle movements in mixed traffic condition. The trajectories model has been built using Polynomial Least-squares Approximation based on the coordinates that earned from the motorcycle maneuvers. In order to collect the data, this research uses video cameras fixed at elevated positions to record traffic flow. There are three steps of modeling motorcycle's trajectory: 1) data preprocessing to obtained pixel coordinate which represents motorcycle's trajectory, 2) coordinates transformation to convert the pixel coordinate to real-world coordinate, and 3) build a trajectory model using polynomial least-square approximation. This method was implemented for tracking the trajectory of motorcycle's maneuver. The maneuvers are when they try to avoid the collision with another motorcycle, car, and pedestrian. Based on experimental and analysis result for twenty samples of data, using a comparison of MSE for each degree of the polynomial, the trajectory model of motorcycle maneuver for avoiding an object in front of them can be described properly by 4th order polynomial equation. This result shows that trajectory model using polynomial least-squares approximation give an accurate outcome and also has the simpler computation. Furthermore, the conclusion of this study about trajectory tracking model for motorcycle may be instructive as a prior knowledge for building mixed traffic model based on their trajectory behaviors. This model also provides the information necessary for safe behavior decision making or motion planning

    Belted Safety Jacket: a new concept in Powered Two-Wheeler passive safety

    Abstract Powered Two Wheelers (PTWs) offer a viable solution to reduce traffic congestion and promote personal mobility. However, vehicle characteristics and conspicuity issues lead to an overrepresentation of PTWs in accident statistics. This work presents an innovative approach for concept design of new passive safety devices and their development. The landscape of possible design solutions was examined with an in-depth analysis of the state of the art and with the use of conceptual design tools. Candidate solutions underwent a feasibility assessment and they were crossed-checked with the rider needs, identified via a specific on-line survey. The concept of a new passive safety device was born: a Belted Safety Jacket (BSJ). An initial assessment of the device effectiveness for the reduction of riders' injuries was performed by comparison of the main biomechanical indexes (HIC, Nijmax, Chest Deflection and Viscous Criterion) in a relevant accident configuration, reproduced in a virtual environment, with and without the device. Later a full factorial Design of Experiment (DOE) was carried out to understand the influence of the device geometrical variables (i.e. possible design parameters) on the biomechanical indexes. The results demonstrated that the integration of BSJ onto the vehicle has the potential to significantly reduce the occurrence of serious injuries during a PTW accident versus a car, since it prevents the contact of the rider with the opponent vehicle. The analysis of the accident kinematic with BSJ suggests that the device will be beneficial also in accidents with other vehicle types

We apply a qualitative methodology to update exploitation and exploration mechanisms in nine Japanese interfirm networks.     Developing pathways to low carbon land based passenger transport in Great Britain by 2050

    The key aim of this paper is to examine strategic pathways to low carbon personal transport in Britain and to compare these with the current trajectory of transport policy. A 2050 baseline was established using trend information, forecasts and best evidence from the literature on response to policy intervention. A range of strategies are tested including: technological development, pricing, public transport and soft measures. We conclude that even dramatic technological advance cannot meet the more stringent targets for carbon reduction in the absence of considerable behavioural change. The most promising combinations of measures involve clear price signals to encourage both a reduction in the use of motorised transport and the development and purchase of more efficient vehicles; decarbonisation of public transport and facilitating measures to enhance access whilst reducing the need for motorised travel

    Abstract The culture of law enforcement is an all or nothing proposition with no gray area where membership into this society is concerned. You are either “on the job” or you are not. Even references among officers to “the job” indicate there is only one job. Likened to a secret handshake, that initial phrase if answered correctly opens the door to instant fraternal acceptance, get out of violation passes, and the many other assumed privileges of brotherhood. Manning (1980) describes the powerful mystification of policing as the “sacred canopy”. He further asserts that “the police role conveys a sense of sacredness or awesome power that lies at the root of political order, and authority, the claims a state makes upon its people for deference to rules, laws and norms” (Manning, 1980, p. 21). These elements make policing unique to all other American occupations. The sacredness of the profession creates social autonomy protected by the officers’ code of silence. Operating in this vacuum apart from public accountability fosters an environment for behavior outside of laws the institution is charged with enforcing. My research shows the process of occupational socialization ushers officers into a state of becoming blue, or the enculturation of expectant behavior and actions. I confirm that assignments into the Special Operations Group (SOG) facilitate a subculture separate and apart from the institutional ideals (Librett, 2006) and encourage a darkening of the shade of blue identifying officers with a labeling of deviance. While previous research identifies the code of silence as a by-product of the policing culture, my research identifies it as fundamental for maintaining the covenant of the dark blue fraternity
