    A genetic algorithm-assisted semi-adaptive MMSE multi-user detection for MC-CDMA mobile communication systems

    Get PDF
In this work, a novel Minimum-Mean Squared-Error (MMSE) multi-user detector is proposed for MC-CDMA transmission systems working over mobile radio channels characterized by time-varying multipath fading. The proposed MUD algorithm is based on a Genetic Algorithm (GA)-assisted per-carrier MMSE criterion. The GA block works in two successive steps: a training-aided step aimed at computing the optimal receiver weights using a very short training sequence, and a decision-directed step aimed at dynamically updating the weights vector during a channel coherence period. Numerical results evidenced BER performances almost coincident with ones yielded by ideal MMSE-MUD based on the perfect knowledge of channel impulse response. The proposed GA-assisted MMSE-MUD clearly outperforms state-of-the-art adaptive MMSE receivers based on deterministic gradient algorithms, especially for high number of transmitting users

Near-Instantaneously Adaptive HSDPA-Style OFDM Versus MC-CDMA Transceivers for WIFI, WIMAX, and Next-Generation Cellular Systems

Burts-by-burst (BbB) adaptive high-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) style multicarrier systems are reviewed, identifying their most critical design aspects. These systems exhibit numerous attractive features, rendering them eminently eligible for employment in next-generation wireless systems. It is argued that BbB-adaptive or symbol-by-symbol adaptive orthogonal frequency division multiplex (OFDM) modems counteract the near instantaneous channel quality variations and hence attain an increased throughput or robustness in comparison to their fixed-mode counterparts. Although they act quite differently, various diversity techniques, such as Rake receivers and space-time block coding (STBC) are also capable of mitigating the channel quality variations in their effort to reduce the bit error ratio (BER), provided that the individual antenna elements experience independent fading. By contrast, in the presence of correlated fading imposed by shadowing or time-variant multiuser interference, the benefits of space-time coding erode and it is unrealistic to expect that a fixed-mode space-time coded system remains capable of maintaining a near-constant BER

Decision Feedback Equaliser (DFE) aided wideband Burst-by-Burst (BbB) Adaptive Trellis Coded Modulation (TCM), Turbo Trellis Coded Modulation (TTCM) and Bit-Interleaved Coded Modulation (BICM) assisted H.263-based video transceivers are proposed and characterised in performance terms when communicating over the COST 207 Typical Urban wideband fading channel. Specifically, four different modulation modes, namely 4QAM, 8PSK, 16QAM and 64QAM are invoked and protected by the above-mentioned coded modulation schemes. The TTCM assisted scheme was found to provide the best video performance, although at the cost of the highest complexity. A range of lower-complexity arrangements will also be characterised. Finally, in order to confirm these findings in an important practical environment, we have also investigated the adaptive TTCM scheme in the CDMA-based Universal Mobile Telecommunications System's (UMTS) Terrestrial Radio Access (UTRA) scenario and the good performance of adaptive TTCM scheme recorded when communicating over the COST 207 channels was retained in the UTRA environment

Dissertação apresentada na Faculdade de CiĂȘncias e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa para obtenção do Grau de Mestre em Engenharia ElectrotĂ©cnica e de ComputadoresIn recent years, block transmission techniques were proposed and developed for broadband wireless communication systems, which have to deal with strongly frequency-selective fading channels. Techniques like Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing (OFDM)and Single Carrier with Frequency Domain Equalization (SC-FDE) are able to provide high bit rates despite the channel adversities. In this thesis we concentrate on the study of single carrier block transmission techniques considering receiver structures suitable to scenarios with strongly time-dispersive channels. CP-assisted (Cycle Pre x) block transmission techniques are employed to cope with frequency selective channels, allowing cost-e ective implementations through FFT-based (Fast Fourier Transform) signal processing. It is investigated the impact of the number of multipath components as well as the diversity order on the asymptotic performance of SC-FDE schemes. We also propose a receiver structure able to perform a joint detection and channel estimation method, in which it is possible to combine the channel estimates, based on training sequences, with decision-directed channel estimates. A study about the impact of the correlation factor estimation in the performance of Iterative Block-Decision Feedback Equalizer (IB-DFE) receivers is also presented

Initial synchronisation of wideband and UWB direct sequence systems: single- and multiple-antenna aided solutions

    No full text
This survey guides the reader through the open literature on the principle of initial synchronisation in single-antenna-assisted single- and multi-carrier Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) as well as Direct Sequence-Ultra WideBand (DS-UWB) systems, with special emphasis on the DownLink (DL). There is a paucity of up-to-date surveys and review articles on initial synchronization solutions for MIMO-aided and cooperative systems - even though there is a plethora of papers on both MIMOs and on cooperative systems, which assume perfect synchronization. Hence this paper aims to ?ll the related gap in the literature

Spatio-Temporal processing for Optimum Uplink-Downlink WCDMA Systems

The capacity of a cellular system is limited by two different phenomena, namely multipath fading and multiple access interference (MAl). A Two Dimensional (2-D) receiver combats both of these by processing the signal both in the spatial and temporal domain. An ideal 2-D receiver would perform joint space-time processing, but at the price of high computational complexity. In this research we investigate computationally simpler technique termed as a Beamfom1er-Rake. In a Beamformer-Rake, the output of a beamfom1er is fed into a succeeding temporal processor to take advantage of both the beamformer and Rake receiver. Wireless service providers throughout the world are working to introduce the third generation (3G) and beyond (3G) cellular service that will provide higher data rates and better spectral efficiency. Wideband COMA (WCDMA) has been widely accepted as one of the air interfaces for 3G. A Beamformer-Rake receiver can be an effective solution to provide the receivers enhanced capabilities needed to achieve the required performance of a WCDMA system. We consider three different Pilot Symbol Assisted (PSA) beamforming techniques, Direct Matrix Inversion (DMI), Least-Mean Square (LMS) and Recursive Least Square (RLS) adaptive algorithms. Geometrically Based Single Bounce (GBSB) statistical Circular channel model is considered, which is more suitable for array processing, and conductive to RAKE combining. The performances of the Beam former-Rake receiver are evaluated in this channel model as a function of the number of antenna elements and RAKE fingers, in which are evaluated for the uplink WCDMA system. It is shown that, the Beamformer-Rake receiver outperforms the conventional RAKE receiver and the conventional beamformer by a significant margin. Also, we optimize and develop a mathematical formulation for the output Signal to Interference plus Noise Ratio (SINR) of a Beam former-Rake receiver. In this research, also, we develop, simulate and evaluate the SINR and Signal to Noise Ratio (Et!Nol performances of an adaptive beamforming technique in the WCDMA system for downlink. The performance is then compared with an omnidirectional antenna system. Simulation shows that the best perfom1ance can be achieved when all the mobiles with same Angle-of-Arrival (AOA) and different distance from base station are formed in one beam

Phase-domain Injected Training for Channel Estimation in Constant Envelope OFDM

    Get PDF
Constant envelope orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CE-OFDM) is a multi-carrier waveform with 0 dB peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR). This property enables the exploitation of multi-carrier waveforms with non-linear power amplifiers, avoiding the undesirable clipping effects. However, the existing channel estimation techniques designed for OFDM cannot be reused, since the use of a phase modulator makes CE-OFDM a non-linear waveform. Previous works assumed that the channel estimation process relies on the transmission of preambles, and the data symbols are equalized using a frequency domain equalizer (FDE). To avoid the overhead induced by preambles, a phase-domain injected training (PIT) is proposed, where the pilot sequence is embedded in the phase dimension of the data symbols. This novel approach does not waste time and/or frequency resources as in preamble-based schemes. Moreover, it does not require additional power for the training. The received symbols are averaged with a dual procedure, and owing to the particular structure of CE-OFDM, the channel estimates are recovered. Also, the analytical expression of the channel estimation mean squared error (MSE) is derived. Finally, several numerical results illustrate the performance of the proposal, showing that the MSE, bit error rate (BER) and achievable rate are improved, as compared to the existing works. This work was supported by the Spanish National Project IRENE-EARTH under Grant PID2020-115323RBC33/AEI/10.13039/501100011033. Channel Estimation Architectures for Mobile Reception in Emerging DVB Standards

    Get PDF
Throughout this work, channel estimation techniques have been analyzed and proposed for moderate and very high mobility DVB (digital video broadcasting) receivers, focusing on the DVB-T2 (Digital Video Broadcasting - Terrestrial 2) framework and the forthcoming DVB-NGH (Digital Video Broadcasting - Next Generation Handheld) standard. Mobility support is one of the key features of these DVB specifications, which try to deal with the challenge of enabling HDTV (high definition television) delivery at high vehicular speed. In high-mobility scenarios, the channel response varies within an OFDM (orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing) block and the subcarriers are no longer orthogonal, which leads to the so-called ICI (inter-carrier interference), making the system performance drop severely. Therefore, in order to successfully decode the transmitted data, ICI-aware detectors are necessary and accurate CSI (channel state information), including the ICI terms, is required at the receiver. With the aim of reducing the number of parameters required for such channel estimation while ensuring accurate CSI, BEM (basis expansion model) techniques have been analyzed and proposed for the high-mobility DVB-T2 scenario. A suitable clustered pilot structure has been proposed and its performance has been compared to the pilot patterns proposed in the standard. Different reception schemes that effectively cancel ICI in combination with BEM channel estimation have been proposed, including a Turbo scheme that includes a BP (belief propagation) based ICI canceler, a soft-input decision-directed BEM channel estimator and the LDPC (low-density parity check) decoder. Numerical results have been presented for the most common channel models, showing that the proposed receiver schemes allow good reception, even in receivers with extremely high mobility (up to 0.5 of normalized Doppler frequency).Doktoretza tesi honetan, hainbat kanal estimazio teknika ezberdin aztertu eta proposatu dira mugikortasun ertain eta handiko DVB (Digital Video Broadcasting) hartzaileentzat, bigarren belaunaldiko Lurreko Telebista Digitalean DVB-T2 (Digital Video Broadcasting - Terrestrial 2 ) eta hurrengo DVB-NGH (Digital Video Broadcasting - Next Generation Handheld) estandarretan oinarrututa. Mugikortasuna bigarren belaunaldiko telebista estandarrean funtsezko ezaugarri bat da, HDTV (high definition television) zerbitzuak abiadura handiko hartzaileetan ahalbidetzeko erronkari aurre egiteko nahian. Baldintza horietan, kanala OFDM (ortogonalak maiztasun-zatiketa multiplexing ) sinbolo baten barruan aldatzen da, eta subportadorak jada ez dira ortogonalak, ICI-a (inter-carrier interference) sortuz, eta sistemaren errendimendua hondatuz. Beraz, transmititutako datuak behar bezala deskodeatzeko, ICI-a ekiditeko gai diren detektagailuak eta CSI-a (channel state information) zehatza, ICI osagaiak barne, ezinbestekoak egiten dira hartzailean. Kanalaren estimazio horretarako beharrezkoak diren parametro kopurua murrizteko eta aldi berean CSI zehatza bermatzeko, BEM (basis expansion model) teknika aztertu eta proposatu da ICI kanala identifikatzeko mugikortasun handiko DVB-T2 eszenatokitan. Horrez gain, pilotu egitura egokia proposatu da, estandarrean proposatutako pilotu ereduekin alderatuz BEM estimazioan oinarritua.
