This is the post-print version of the final paper published in Neurocomputing. The published article is available from the link below. Changes resulting from the publishing process, such as peer review, editing, corrections, structural formatting, and other quality control mechanisms may not be reflected in this document. Changes may have been made to this work since it was submitted for publication. Copyright @ 2013 Elsevier B.V.Spam, under a variety of shapes and forms, continues to inflict increased damage. Varying approaches including Support Vector Machine (SVM) techniques have been proposed for spam filter training and classification. However, SVM training is a computationally intensive process. This paper presents a MapReduce based parallel SVM algorithm for scalable spam filter training. By distributing, processing and optimizing the subsets of the training data across multiple participating computer nodes, the parallel SVM reduces the training time significantly. Ontology semantics are employed to minimize the impact of accuracy degradation when distributing the training data among a number of SVM classifiers. Experimental results show that ontology based augmentation improves the accuracy level of the parallel SVM beyond the original sequential counterpart

Aim: The aim of this cross-sectional survey was to determine the views of infection prevention and control practitioners (IPCPs) on publishing research. Methods: A convenience sample was obtained by approaching delegates at the 2015 Infection Prevention Society conference and data was captured via a hand-held electronic device. Findings: Of the 79 respondents most (83%) read Journal of Infection Prevention (JIP) and found it useful for informing their practice (72%). However, most (91%) had never published in JIP, and less than half (40%) published elsewhere. The main barrier to publication was not having work suitable for publication (38%). Support (37%), training in writing for publication (10%) and time (9%) were considered to be important facilitators in encouraging respondents to publish. Discussion: Strategies that support IPCPs in developing their writing skills may encourage more IPCPs to disseminate evidence to support best practice by publishing their work in peer reviewed journals

This article has been made available through the Brunel Open Access Publishing Fund.We construct a simple model incorporating various urban labour market phenomena obtaining in developing economies, and we give a diagrammatic formulation of the market equilibrium. Our initial formulation assumes an integrated labour market and allows for entrepreneurship, self-employment, and wage employment. We then introduce labour market segmentation. In equilibrium voluntary and involuntary self-employment, formal and informal wage employment, and formal and informal entrepreneurship may all coexist. We illustrate the model by an example calibrated on Latin American data, examining individual labour market transitions and implications of education/training and labour market policies

The Indian University Grants Commission (UGC) has introduced a number of policies aimed at addressing issues around the robustness and quality of Indian research. One focus of these policies has been the introduction of mandatory publishing ethics training for Indian PhD students aimed at reducing unethical or predatory research and publishing practices. In this blogpost, Santosh C. Hulagabali, reflects on the successful development of this course in his own institution and how ethical training may influence scholarly communication more broadly in India

[ANALYSIS OF THE PREPARATION AND PUBLICATION OF SCIENTIFIC PAPERS AS A BENCHMARK OF WIDYAISWARA’s COMPETENCE] This study aimed to describe the competence of widyaiswara, explain the inhibiting factors, and know the effort to increase the competence and professionalism of widyaiswara at Semarang Religious Training Center in composing and publishing the scientific paper. The method used in this study was an inductive qualitative method. The sampling technique by purposive sampling, data collection techniques are document review and interview. Data analysis techniques are using the Miles and Huberman model, including data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The results of the study showed that widyaiswara at Semarang Religious Training Center have understood and are competent in composing and publish of scientific paper. The inhibiting factors for widyaiswara in composing and publishing the scientific paper, are difficulty fulfilling the writing style and journal form, time, and lack of information on how to publish. Efforts to increase the competence and professionalism of widyaiswara in composing and publishing the scientific paper have been done by the management is organize scientific writing training, send widyaiswara to follow the training of trainer the scientific paper, middle and high tier training and academic writing activities
