Multimedia delivery in the future internet
The term “Networked Media” implies that all kinds of media including text, image, 3D graphics, audio
and video are produced, distributed, shared, managed and consumed on-line through various networks,
like the Internet, Fiber, WiFi, WiMAX, GPRS, 3G and so on, in a convergent manner [1]. This white
paper is the contribution of the Media Delivery Platform (MDP) cluster and aims to cover the Networked
challenges of the Networked Media in the transition to the Future of the Internet.
Internet has evolved and changed the way we work and live. End users of the Internet have been confronted
with a bewildering range of media, services and applications and of technological innovations concerning
media formats, wireless networks, terminal types and capabilities. And there is little evidence that the pace
of this innovation is slowing. Today, over one billion of users access the Internet on regular basis, more
than 100 million users have downloaded at least one (multi)media file and over 47 millions of them do so
regularly, searching in more than 160 Exabytes1 of content. In the near future these numbers are expected
to exponentially rise. It is expected that the Internet content will be increased by at least a factor of 6, rising
to more than 990 Exabytes before 2012, fuelled mainly by the users themselves. Moreover, it is envisaged
that in a near- to mid-term future, the Internet will provide the means to share and distribute (new)
multimedia content and services with superior quality and striking flexibility, in a trusted and personalized
way, improving citizens’ quality of life, working conditions, edutainment and safety.
In this evolving environment, new transport protocols, new multimedia encoding schemes, cross-layer inthe
network adaptation, machine-to-machine communication (including RFIDs), rich 3D content as well as
community networks and the use of peer-to-peer (P2P) overlays are expected to generate new models of
interaction and cooperation, and be able to support enhanced perceived quality-of-experience (PQoE) and
innovative applications “on the move”, like virtual collaboration environments, personalised services/
media, virtual sport groups, on-line gaming, edutainment. In this context, the interaction with content
combined with interactive/multimedia search capabilities across distributed repositories, opportunistic P2P
networks and the dynamic adaptation to the characteristics of diverse mobile terminals are expected to
contribute towards such a vision.
Based on work that has taken place in a number of EC co-funded projects, in Framework Program 6 (FP6)
and Framework Program 7 (FP7), a group of experts and technology visionaries have voluntarily
contributed in this white paper aiming to describe the status, the state-of-the art, the challenges and the way
ahead in the area of Content Aware media delivery platforms
Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks
Ad-hoc networks are a key in the evolution of wireless networks. Ad-hoc networks are typically composed of equal nodes, which communicate over wireless links without any central control. Ad-hoc wireless networks inherit the traditional problems of wireless and mobile communications, such as bandwidth optimisation, power control and transmission quality enhancement. In addition, the multi-hop nature and the lack of fixed infrastructure brings new research problems such as configuration advertising, discovery and maintenance, as well as ad-hoc addressing and self-routing. Many different approaches and protocols have been proposed and there are even multiple standardization efforts within the Internet Engineering Task Force, as well as academic and industrial projects. This chapter focuses on the state of the art in mobile ad-hoc networks. It highlights some of the emerging technologies, protocols, and approaches (at different layers) for realizing network services for users on the move in areas with possibly no pre-existing communications infrastructure
PERFORMANCE STUDY FOR CAPILLARY MACHINE-TO-MACHINE NETWORKS
Communication technologies witness a wide and rapid pervasiveness of wireless machine-to-machine (M2M) communications. It is emerging to apply for data transfer among devices without human intervention. Capillary M2M networks represent a candidate for providing reliable M2M connectivity. In this thesis, we propose a wireless network architecture that aims at supporting a wide range of M2M applications (either real-time or non-real-time) with an acceptable QoS level. The architecture uses capillary gateways to reduce the number of devices communicating directly with a cellular network such as LTE. Moreover, the proposed architecture reduces the traffic load on the cellular network by providing capillary gateways with dual wireless interfaces. One interface is connected to the cellular network, whereas the other is proposed to communicate to the intended destination via a WiFi-based mesh backbone for cost-effectiveness. We study the performance of our proposed architecture with the aid of the ns-2 simulator. An M2M capillary network is simulated in different scenarios by varying multiple factors that affect the system performance. The simulation results measure average packet delay and packet loss to evaluate the quality-of-service (QoS) of the proposed architecture. Our results reveal that the proposed architecture can satisfy the required level of QoS with low traffic load on the cellular network. It also outperforms a cellular-based capillary M2M network and WiFi-based capillary M2M network. This implies a low cost of operation for the service provider while meeting a high-bandwidth service level agreement. In addition, we investigate how the proposed architecture behaves with different factors like the number of capillary gateways, different application traffic rates, the number of backbone routers with different routing protocols, the number of destination servers, and the data rates provided by the LTE and Wi-Fi technologies. Furthermore, the simulation results show that the proposed architecture continues to be reliable in terms of packet delay and packet loss even under a large number of nodes and high application traffic rates
QoS support in satellite and wireless networks : study under the network simulator (NS-2)
Aquest projecte es basa en l'estudi de l'oferiment de qualitat de servei en xarxes wireless i satel·litals. Per això l'estudi de les tècniques de cross-layer i del IEEE 802.11e ha sigut el punt clau per al desenvolupament teòric d'aquest estudi. Usant el simulador de xarxes network simulator, a la part de simulacions es plantegen tres situacions: l'estudi de la xarxa satel·lital, l'estudi del mètode d'accés HCCA i la interconnexió de la xarxa satel·lital amb la wireless. Encara que aquest últim punt, incomplet en aquest projecte, ha de ser la continuació per a futures investigacions.Este proyecto se basa en el estudio del ofrecimiento de calidad de servicio en redes wireless y satelitales. Por eso el estudio de las técnicas de cross-layer y del IEEE 802.11eha sido el punto clave para el desarrollo teórico de este estudio. Usando el simulador de redes network simulator, en la parte de simulaciones se plantean tres situaciones: el estudio de la red satelital, el estudio del método de acceso HCCA y la interconexión de la red satelital con la wireless. Aunque este último punto, incompleto en este proyecto, tiene que ser la continuación para futuras investigaciones.This project is based on the study of offering quality of service in satellite and wireless networks. For that reason the study of the techniques of cross-layer and the IEEE 802.11e has been the key point for the theoretical development of this study. Using the software network simulator, in the part of simulations three situations consider: the study of the satellite network, the study of the access method HCCA and the interconnection of the satellite network with the wireless. Time-Driven Access and Forwarding for Industrial Wireless Multihop Networks
The deployment of wireless technologies in industrial networks is very promising mainly due to their inherent flexibility. However, current wireless solutions lack the capability to provide the deterministic, low delay service required by many industrial applications. Moreover, the high level of interference generated by industrial equipment limits the coverage that ensures acceptable performance. Multi-hop solutions, when combining frame forwarding with higher node density, have the potential to provide the needed coverage while keeping radio communication range short. However, in multi-hop solutions the medium access time at each of the nodes traversed additively contributes to the end-to-end delay and the forwarding delay (i.e., the time required for packets to be processed, switched, and queued) at each node is to be added as well. This paper describes Time-driven Access and Forwarding (TAF), a solution for guaranteeing deterministic delay, at both the access and forwarding level, in wireless multi-hop networks, analyzes its properties, and assesses its performance in industrial scenario
Wireless communications in the new millennium and third generation wireless networks
At the end of the 20 century, and at the beginning of this one, wireless communications are making large advances. The new technologies are on the way to provide a high-speed, high-quality information exchange between handheld terminals, and information repositories. The so called 2,5 generation networks, using the techniques like the HSCSD1, GPRS2, EDGE3, and the 3r generation wireless systems will help the wireless world to reach those goals. In this thesis I will start from the first and second-generation wireless networks, and then look into the 2,5 generation and 3rd generation wireless communications more in detail. The latest advances in the wireless world are the main focus of this paper although a short history of wireless communications is also given. The various aspects related to 3rd generation systems will be explored in this thesis, for example the air interface discussions, its time scale, its elements like the mobile equipment, software and security, USLM4, services that will be offered, etc. In addition, the technical factors and key technologies that are likely to shape the wireless network environment of the future will be explored. This part is expected to help us to see beyond the 3rd generation
Quality of Service Controlled Multimedia Transport Protocol
PhDThis research looks at the design of an open transport protocol that supports a range of
services including multimedia over low data-rate networks. Low data-rate multimedia
applications require a system that provides quality of service (QoS) assurance and flexibility.
One promising field is the area of content-based coding. Content-based systems use an array
of protocols to select the optimum set of coding algorithms. A content-based transport
protocol integrates a content-based application to a transmission network.
General transport protocols form a bottleneck in low data-rate multimedia

Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) makes use of traffic engineering (TE)
techniques and a variety of protocols to establish pre-determined highly
efficient routes in Wide Area Network (WAN). Unlike IP networks in which
routing decision has to be made through header analysis on a hop-by-hop
basis, MPLS makes use of a short bit sequence that indicates the forwarding
equivalence class (FEC) of a packet and utilises a predefined routing table to
handle packets of a specific FEC type. Thus header analysis of packets is not
required, resulting in lower latency. In addition, packets of similar
characteristics can be routed in a consistent manner. For example, packets
carrying real-time information can be routed to low latency paths across the
networks. Thus the key success to MPLS is to efficiently control and distribute
the bandwidth available between applications across the networks.
A lot of research effort on bandwidth management in MPLS networks has
already been devoted in the past. However, with the imminent roll out of 5G,
MPLS is seen as a key technology for mobile backhaul. To cope with the 5G
demands of rich, context aware and multimedia-based user applications, more
efficient bandwidth management solutions need to be derived.
This thesis focuses on the design of bandwidth management algorithms, more
specifically QoS scheduling, in MPLS network for 5G mobile backhaul. The
aim is to ensure the reliability and the speed of packet transfer across the
network. As 5G is expected to greatly improve the user experience with
innovative and high quality services, users’ perceived quality of service (QoS)
needs to be taken into account when deriving such bandwidth management
solutions. QoS expectation from users are often subjective and vague. Thus
this thesis proposes the use of fuzzy logic based solution to provide service aware and user-centric bandwidth management in order to satisfy
requirements imposed by the network and users.
Unfortunately, the disadvantage of fuzzy logic is scalability since dependable
fuzzy rules and membership functions increase when the complexity of being
modelled increases. To resolve this issue, this thesis proposes the use of neuro-fuzzy to solicit interpretable IF-THEN rules.The algorithms are
implemented and tested through NS2 and Matlab simulations. The
performance of the algorithms are evaluated and compared with other
conventional algorithms in terms of average throughput, delay, reliability, cost,
packet loss ratio, and utilization rate.
Simulation results show that the neuro-fuzzy based algorithm perform better
than fuzzy and other conventional packet scheduling algorithms using IP and
